Even though it was still early evening, I suddenly got hungry and started craving smoky grilled eel. Gimhae is famous for its freshwater eel spots, so it's a place my family often goes for a meal out. I happened to be in the mood for eel, so I headed to Ildeung Chamsutt Jangeo in Gusan-dong, Gimhae. This time I went with my parents and we ordered 1kg of eel to grill over charcoal.

Parking wasn't much of a concern here. There are dedicated spaces right in front of the restaurant, and nearby side streets and public lots are also available, so it was fine to visit by car.

We came in during the early evening and the place was quite roomy — it looks like it'd work well for both group dinners and family gatherings.

What really caught my eye was the kids' playroom. When eating out with kids, sometimes looking after them is harder than the meal itself, so having a playroom means families with young children can eat a little more comfortably.

Crispy eel bone chips and warm, refreshing nurungjitang (scorched-rice water) arrived, settling and warming the stomach. For a high-protein nourishing meal like this, a warm stomach seems to help digestion too — a good combination. As the eel sizzled golden on the charcoal, the savory smell rising up only made my hungry stomach more eager. The staff grilled the eel to just the right point, so we could eat comfortably without worrying about the grilling ourselves.

It's delicious even eaten plain, but wrapping the eel in a lettuce leaf with garlic and ginger cut the richness and added a fragrant note that I really liked. Maybe because I was hungry going in, but with every bite the eel really did seem to fill up that empty stomach.

Dipping it in the house sauce brought out even more of the eel's flavor — there wasn't really time to reach for the other side dishes. It's the kind of bite that melts in your mouth.
