## In short

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a bakery tucked into an alley off the Ikseon-dong hanok street in Jongno, Seoul, often called one of the city's three great bakeries near Jongno 3-ga. Visiting on a weekday during a gallery outing, I bought all three signatures — the onion bagel, garlic baguette and coffee bread — after sampling them at the tasting counter beside the register. The onion bagel was crisp outside with cream that isn't too sweet, good enough to pass as a snack for an elementary-school child.

I had a gallery event nearby, so I visited Jongno 3-ga and stopped by Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong, already famous as one of Seoul's top three bakeries — here's how it went.

## Munhwa Bakery: location, hours and parking in Ikseon-dong

Munhwa Bakery is located at 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1st floor, Jongno-gu, Seoul, in the alley at the heart of the Ikseon-dong hanok street. Walking there is recommended!! TIP: it's under 5 minutes on foot from Jongno 3-ga station.

- Hours: 11:00 – 20:00
- Reservations: Not available
- Parking: No dedicated lot. Nearby paid public parking in Ikseon-dong is an option, but it costs money and can get crowded.

Since it's tucked inside the hanok village alleys, I'd recommend visiting by public transit!

## Inside and outside Munhwa Bakery — how long is the weekday wait?

The wood-toned exterior, which brings to mind hanok roof tiles, made Munhwa Bakery easy to spot.

Since I visited on a weekday, the line wasn't stretching far outside, but given how popular it is as one of Seoul's top three bakeries, you might have to wait on weekends — worth keeping in mind.

### "The bakery that saves children": baked and sold the same day

A sign reading "the bakery that saves children" outside Munhwa Bakery caught my eye. All the bread here is made and sold on a same-day basis as a matter of policy, and any leftovers are donated to the surrounding community, which made it feel like good, conscious shopping.

Apparently the leftovers go to people with disabilities living alone, free meal centers, homeless shelters, elderly people living alone, and children who might otherwise go without meals — which made it feel like an even kinder bakery.

### Only 2 groups inside Munhwa Bakery at a time

Since the space isn't very roomy, the bakery limits how many groups can enter — only 2 groups are let in at once.

Once inside, the place was full of a truly savory bread smell. Although the store was small, the bread was laid out in a long single row, which made it easy to pick things quickly.

## What to order at Munhwa Bakery, and how the tasting counter works

Munhwa Bakery's signature items are the onion bagel, garlic baguette, and coffee bread. Curious about the taste, I bought all three.

There was a nice tasting counter set up right in front of the register inside.

As soon as I ordered, the staff quickly wrapped up the bread. The bold, brush-style lettering of "Munhwa Bakery" also matched the Ikseon-dong vibe well, giving it an even stronger sense of Korea. I actually saw foreign visitors buying bread too, which made it feel every bit the popular spot it's known to be.

### Onion bagel: crisp shell, cream that isn't sweet

I already really like onion bagels, so I was looking forward to this one, and I loved feeling how crisp the outside was.

There was plenty of cream, and best of all, it wasn't too sweet, which made it even more enjoyable.

My kid genuinely enjoyed eating the onion bagel — I think it'd make a great snack for elementary schoolers.

### Garlic baguette, Munhwa Bakery's best seller

It was sweet with a noticeable garlic flavor, and since it was the soft type, my kid really enjoyed it too.

### Coffee bread: the nostalgic one

The coffee bread can be taken whole as one long loaf, or cut into pieces to fit how much you want to eat. The soft cream paired well with it, and it was great to enjoy alongside a drink.

True to its status as one of Seoul's top three bakeries, it's also famous as a stop on "bakery pilgrimages," so if you're visiting Jongno 3-ga, it's definitely worth a visit at least once.

What I liked most was that they only sell fresh, same-day-made products, and the fact that they think of the community and practice sharing made it a bakery I could visit with even more trust.
