## In short

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a mackerel-focused Korean restaurant 5 minutes from Jungmun Tourist Complex in Seogwipo, Jeju. Four adults ordered old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap (mackerel with aged kimchi and wrap greens), abalone hot stone rice and grilled mackerel, then added black pork duruchigi (stir-fried pork) and japchae from the self-serve corner before strolling the rose garden. With no break time and a lot big enough for tour buses, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is an easy stop for a hearty Korean breakfast on a Jeju trip.

Whenever you travel around Jeju, black pork, hairtail and mackerel are the three dishes you're bound to eat at least once. While looking for somewhere to eat near Jungmun Tourist Complex during my Seogwipo trip, I ended up at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥).

After a few days of eating my way through Jeju food, I was really craving something spicy and tangy that day, and old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap — mackerel simmered with aged kimchi — was exactly what came to mind. It's close to Jungmun Tourist Complex, so it's a great option when you want a hearty Korean meal from breakfast onward during your trip. Here's my honest review.

## Where is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap? 5 minutes from Jungmun Tourist Complex

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a mackerel restaurant on Iljuseo-ro in Seogwipo-si, Jeju, close enough to Jungmun Tourist Complex to make it a convenient meal stop during a Seogwipo itinerary. Taste matters on a Jeju trip, but so do your route and parking.

As we drove in, pretty flowers blooming right at the parking lot entrance caught my eye before we'd even reached the restaurant — I was already impressed.

It felt less like arriving at an ordinary restaurant and more like walking into a well-tended garden. So after parking, I walked back toward the entrance and took some photos.

### Parking at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap: room for tour buses

The parking lot at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap was much bigger than I expected. On a Jeju trip you're usually driving a rental car, and a cramped lot makes things uncomfortable before you've even eaten — but here there was plenty of space to park with ease.

The lot is large enough for tour buses, and there's a separate annex building, so it looked like a good spot not just for families but for group trips or gatherings. If you're traveling with parents or several families together on a Jeju trip, not having to worry about parking or seating is a real plus.

## How big is the dining room?

Walking into Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, the interior was also very spacious. There are a lot of tables, but they're spaced out generously, so it didn't feel crowded even with plenty of customers around.

I also liked that our path never kept crossing with the table next to us, which made for a comfortable meal. Given the size of the place and the extra annex, it felt relaxed overall despite being a popular Jeju tourist-area restaurant that handles a lot of group bookings.

## What four adults ordered, and the side dishes that came with it

There were four of us adults, and we ordered old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap plus abalone hot stone rice and grilled mackerel to share.

The basic side dishes were kimchi, soft tofu, bean sprout salad, sweet pumpkin, diced radish kimchi, salad, seaweed and ssam greens (leafy wraps).

### The self-serve corner: black pork duruchigi and japchae

There's also a self-serve corner set up on one side of Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap. If we ran low on any side dish during the meal, we could just help ourselves — no need to flag down staff, and we could take as much of whatever we wanted.

The self-serve corner had black pork bulgogi and japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), so we grabbed extra helpings of both.

## Old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap: tangy, spicy and made for wrapping

The dish I most wanted to try that day was the restaurant's signature old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap. After days of eating out on this trip, I was craving something tangy and spicy, and this was exactly it.

![Old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap with tangy, spicy broth](https://img.superchart.com/images/jungmun-mackerel-ssambap-jeju-breakfast/jungmun-mackerel-ssambap-jeju-breakfast-14-2tnfm-900.webp)

Eating the well-fermented aged kimchi together with the mackerel, the savory mackerel flavor paired really well with the tangy kick of the kimchi. Tearing off a strip of kimchi, piling on a piece of mackerel and eating it with rice — nothing beats it for demolishing a bowl of rice.

It's tasty on its own, but wrapping rice, mackerel and kimchi together in a leaf lets all the flavors come together for an even better bite.

If you want to try mackerel a bit differently in Jeju, or you're craving something tangy and spicy, this is the dish I'd recommend.

## Abalone hot stone rice, a Jeju classic

Since we were in Jeju, seafood was a must. The abalone hot stone rice we ordered alongside paired nicely with the mackerel dishes.

Getting to enjoy abalone with warm hot stone rice made for a hearty meal, even at breakfast time.

There was a generous amount of abalone in particular, giving it a nice chewy texture, and the rice itself was nutty and delicious.

## Grilled mackerel, clean and mild

Alongside the old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap, we also ordered grilled mackerel. Alternating between the spicy, tangy mackerel dish and the plain grilled mackerel, the two dishes complemented each other really well.

If you're visiting with kids or anyone in the family who can't handle spicy food, ordering the old kimchi mackerel and grilled mackerel together to share seems like a great combination.

### Finishing with sungnyung from the hot stone pot crust

The charm of hot stone rice is that once you scoop out the rice, you can pour in warm water and enjoy it as sungnyung (scorched rice tea). You scoop out the rice first, pour warm water into the stone pot, and by the time you've finished eating, the crust stuck to the bottom has softened up nicely.

The warm, nutty flavor of the scorched rice tea settled my palate and made for a satisfying end to the meal. It went especially well after the tangy, spicy old kimchi mackerel — clean and nutty in contrast.

## The rose garden to walk off the meal

And here's what I really liked about Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap — the rose garden right across from the parking lot! Apparently the roses are in full bloom if you visit in May, and even when I visited, flowers were blooming here and there and the garden was clearly well maintained.

Coming just for a meal and ending up with such a pretty garden to walk through was a nice little bonus. Instead of driving off right after eating, we took our time strolling the garden and snapping photos — every corner was nicely decorated and great for pictures.
