## In short

Deureomtong Sotttukkeong Dakdoritang is a Korean restaurant on Wonnohyeong-ro in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju City, specialising in chicken cooked on a cast-iron pot lid. Although dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew) is the house signature, this visit was for dakgalbi (grilled marinated chicken) seared right on the lid, finished with cheese fried rice mixed with flying fish roe and kimchi; orders start from two people. The sweet marinade and light smoky char made Deureomtong Sotttukkeong Dakdoritang worth a trip for more than just the stew.

Nohyeong-dong in Jeju is right in the middle of the city, so there are tons of Chinese tourists around. But go a little deeper inland and you'll find local favorites like this one, packed with actual Jeju residents.

This is a place that knows the fundamentals — melting cheese on top, then hitting it with a torch above and below for that deep smoky flavor.

Since dakdoritang is the main dish here, I was a little nervous about ordering dakgalbi instead. But it was so good I had to write this up.

## Where Deureomtong Sotttukkeong Dakdoritang is and what it feels like inside

![Exterior of Deureomtong Sotttukkeong Dakdoritang in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice-01-1iy6u-966.webp)

The restaurant's name translates roughly to "drum-lid dakdoritang." It's about a 10-minute walk from Jeju's Maison Glad Hotel, along a street that's wide, well-lit, and full of people — so it felt safe to visit even fairly late at night.

The interior instantly explains the name — every table has a lid pot sitting on top of a drum. It gives you that mukbang-YouTuber feeling like you could just dig in and eat straight off it. Unusual and I love it.

The ladle here is unbelievably huge, but somehow photos never quite capture how big it actually is... sigh.

## Menu, the two-person minimum and the side dishes

![Restaurant menu board listing dakdoritang and gopdoritang](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice-04-1hfmy-1200.webp)

The mains here are dakdoritang and gopdoritang, but both of us were craving dakgalbi, so that's what we ordered. Just a heads up — orders start from 2 people, so this isn't great news if you're dining solo.

![A spread of side dishes including kimchi, onion, corn salad, and sweet potato](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice-05-uicg9-966.webp)

Side dishes included kimchi, onion, corn salad, and sweet potato. Not a huge spread, but each one was tastier than expected.

![A plate of leafy wrap greens including perilla leaves](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice-06-vi6om-966.webp)

The leafy wrap greens, especially the perilla leaves, paired really well with the food.

When I first ordered, I worried whether dakgalbi would hold up at a place whose main dish is dakdoritang. But after tasting the side dishes, I felt reassured that whatever they served would be above average.

## How does the dakgalbi grilled on a pot lid taste?

![Raw dakgalbi and vegetables placed on the lid pot before cooking](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice-08-31wad-966.webp)

The dakgalbi came out raw on the lid pot, so it took a while to cook. Along with the chicken, they piled on rice cakes, cheese rice cakes, sweet potato, perilla leaves, scallions, onion, and more vegetables. If you love places that add sweet potato to dakdoritang, this is a big recommendation — and good news, it's in the dakgalbi too!

![An oversized spatula shown next to a person for scale](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice-09-1iozz-966.webp)

That spatula is seriously massive. I wanted to show you just how big it is, but photos don't really do it justice, so I stood next to it myself (I'm 162cm) for scale ^-^

![Scooping fully cooked lid-pot dakgalbi with a large ladle](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice-10-1jsjr-966.webp)

Once it's fully cooked, you just scoop the dakgalbi into your bowl with that bear-paw-sized ladle. It tasted way better than it looked... Highly recommend for anyone who loves sweet-style dakgalbi.

![Sauce-soaked rice cakes and cheese rice cakes from the dakgalbi](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice-11-1mmkr-966.webp)

It's not particularly expensive either. If you're on the fence about ordering dakgalbi, go for it! I'm usually not a fan of rice cakes, but the sauce here was so good I kept eating them anyway. Grilling them right on the lid pot seems to help the sauce soak in even better.

![A bowl of sweet, smoky-charred dakgalbi](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice-12-10oxl-966.webp)

### Why the cheese fried rice finish is the real highlight

The dakgalbi sauce was so sweet and smoky-charred that after one bite, my friend and I immediately agreed: "Fried rice, right?"

![Cheese fried rice made with flying fish roe, seaweed flakes, and kimchi](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice/jeju-nohyeong-dak-galbi-cheese-fried-rice-13-qsxzz-966.webp)

They fry up the rice fresh right there, with flying fish roe, seaweed flakes, and kimchi mixed in.

Stopping at just the dakgalbi would've been a shame. I have to say, you haven't really eaten here properly until you've had this cheese fried rice.

## Final verdict: gopdoritang on the next visit

During my roughly one-month stay in Jeju, I visited plenty of restaurants around Yeondong and Nohyeong-dong, and this was one of the places that broke my assumption that tourist-area restaurants are all style, no substance.

If you visit Deureomtong Sotttukkeong Dakdoritang, don't just come for the dakdoritang — I recommend trying the dakgalbi too. Even now that my Jeju trip is over, I still find myself craving it.

That day, I saw a local customer who'd come specifically for gopdoritang leave because they'd run out of large intestine. It made me promise myself that next time I'm in downtown Jeju, I have to try the gopdoritang too. If the side dish is this good, how amazing must the actual main dish, dakdoritang, be? That's my Nohyeong-dong restaurant review for today!
