## In short

Panda Dim Sum is a Peking duck and dim sum restaurant in Yeonnam-dong, near Hongik University Station in Seoul. On an early weekday evening the writer ordered truffle shumai for 9,000 won, chicken dan dan noodles for 13,000 won and half a Peking duck for 39,000 won, a total of 61,000 won, and all three tasted like the versions eaten in China. I loved Peking duck so much when I traveled in China... Peking duck and dim sum are hard to find in Korea, so I hadn't had them often! It suddenly came to mind, so I looked it up, and it turned out there's a Chinese restaurant, Panda Dim Sum, right in Yeonnam-dong, a neighborhood I go to often near Hongdae — so I paid a visit.

The name Panda Dim Sum alone is so cute, isn't it?

## What is the atmosphere and seating like at Panda Dim Sum?

Panda Dim Sum is a Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building on Donggyo-ro 38an-gil in Yeonnam-dong, and stepping inside, the overall atmosphere felt really cozy and nice. On one wall, a Kung Fu Panda movie was playing, which made for a fun little thing to watch.

We visited a bit early on a weekday evening, but there were already quite a few people eating. The space is clean and well-kept, making it a comfortable place to have a meal.

## What is on the menu at Panda Dim Sum?

The Panda Dim Sum menu is packed with main dishes like sweet and sour pork, yuxiang chicken, mayo shrimp, and Peking duck, plus dim sum, rice bowls, and noodle dishes. As I sat down and looked over the menu, for some reason my photo of it came out really blue...

- Main dishes: sweet and sour pork, yuxiang chicken, mayo shrimp, Peking duck
- Rice bowls: braised pork belly bowl, beef bowl, mapo tofu bowl, and more
- Noodle dishes: chicken dan dan noodles, Chinese tonkotsu, mala mixed noodles, and more
- Various dim sum

The menu names and visuals alone felt like the real deal, full-on authentic Chinese style — my expectations shot up!

There's a wide range of alcohol and drinks too.
They even had baijiu. Looks like there are plenty of drinks that pair well with Chinese food.

Just looking at this spread makes me happy.

## Truffle shumai, 9,000 won: juices running out

Panda Dim Sum's truffle shumai is ₩9,000.

![Close-up of truffle-topped shumai](https://img.superchart.com/images/panda-dimsum-yeonnam-truffle-siumai/panda-dimsum-yeonnam-truffle-siumai-11-lancj-900.webp)

The truffle shumai is gorgeous just to look at... Shumai is a classic Cantonese dim sum made with ground pork and shrimp filling, shaped like an open flower on top and steamed. It looked packed with juices even before I bit in, and topped with a delicate bit of truffle, it looked so appetizing.

The moment I bit in, a subtle truffle aroma spread and the juices held inside came pouring out. It's very hot when it first arrives so you have to be careful, but you really taste the full flavor when you eat it in one bite. The truffle flavor isn't overly strong, so even people who aren't big truffle fans could enjoy it. I honestly wanted to stack them up and keep eating.

## Chicken dan dan noodles, 13,000 won: thick peanut sauce and a big piece of chicken

The chicken dan dan noodles are ₩13,000, and a whole hefty piece of chicken comes on top, which felt like really good value.

Dan dan noodles are one of my favorite noodle dishes! They're a traditional noodle dish from Sichuan, China, topped with chili oil, peanut sauce, and ground meat — and since I love peanuts and chili oil, this dish is exactly my taste.

![Dan dan noodles topped with peanut sauce and chicken](https://img.superchart.com/images/panda-dimsum-yeonnam-truffle-siumai/panda-dimsum-yeonnam-truffle-siumai-15-12ne6-900.webp)

First off, there's a generous amount of peanut sauce, which makes the sauce itself thick, rich, and nutty. On top of that, the chili oil is added in just the right amount, giving a subtle numbing spiciness that cuts through the richness. And with such a big chunk of chicken on top, I felt it was really good value for money.

The overall portion is huge, and the noodles were slightly thick like udon, chewy and soft. Scooping up that thick sauce was so delicious, and it really tasted like the dan dan noodles I had in China.

The chicken was also really tender, with great texture. Overall it's a heavy dish, so I wouldn't recommend it if you can't handle richness, but if you like rich, thick flavors like I do, I highly recommend it.

## Half Peking duck, 39,000 won: hoisin sauce and sugar

Panda Dim Sum's half Peking duck is ₩39,000, and comes with pancakes, scallion strips, cucumber strips, hoisin sauce, and sugar for the skin.

![Half Peking duck set at Panda Dim Sum](https://img.superchart.com/images/panda-dimsum-yeonnam-truffle-siumai/panda-dimsum-yeonnam-truffle-siumai-19-1knlw-900.webp)

Finally, the main dish — half a Peking duck — was neatly set out.

Peking duck is eaten by placing scallion and cucumber strips on a pancake, adding well-sliced duck meat, dipping it thoroughly in hoisin sauce, and wrapping it up. The crispy duck skin part is meant to be dipped in the sugar that comes with it, and that's also really good.

![Plate of Peking duck skin and sugar](https://img.superchart.com/images/panda-dimsum-yeonnam-truffle-siumai/panda-dimsum-yeonnam-truffle-siumai-21-yka8h-900.webp)

The black hoisin sauce that comes with it apparently contains sweet potato, rice, or flour. It has a strong sweet taste with deep flavor, and it pairs really well with the duck meat.

![Peking duck meat dipped in hoisin sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/panda-dimsum-yeonnam-truffle-siumai/panda-dimsum-yeonnam-truffle-siumai-22-mvrli-900.webp)

Peking duck is completely different from the smoked duck we're used to — it's clean-tasting without any artificial seasoning flavor. It's not overly greasy, and the sharp scallion and cucumber cut through any richness, pairing wonderfully with the sweet hoisin sauce. I don't know who came up with this combination, but it's a flavor you never get tired of.

The skin was even better the more sugar you dipped it in.
