## In short

Manmok is a Japanese restaurant with wood interiors in Daechi-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, serving eel rice bowls for lunch. Two orders of whole eel arrived with charcoal-scented eel, pudding-like steamed egg, white kimchi and radish salad, and green tea or black tea ice cream for dessert. The generous table spacing made it a place for lingering over conversation, not just a quick meal.

Manmok, visited for lunch in Daechi-dong.

I went in wanting to properly enjoy a whole eel for lunch, and both the food and the atmosphere of the space made for a really satisfying meal.

## Wood exterior and dinner menu

The exterior was done entirely in wood, giving off that quiet, cozy Japanese restaurant feel right from the outside.

Looking at the signboard, besides the lunch menu, dinner offered a range of dishes like special eel hot pot, special grilled eel, and hanwoo hot pot. Made me want to come back for dinner sometime to try the other options.

## Table spacing and interior atmosphere

Stepping through the door, the same mood from the exterior carried right through.

Warm wood interior, soft lighting, and generous table spacing — the seats weren't packed together, which made the whole meal feel pretty relaxed.

Usually at restaurants you focus on eating and save the real conversation for a café afterward, but this place was different.

With music that matched the mood of the place, it felt like somewhere you could eat great food and have an easy conversation at the same time.

## Lunch order: two whole eels

The lunch menu has an eel rice bowl, and that day we ordered two whole-eel portions.

There's also beer and other drinks on hand to pair with the eel rice bowl.

### When even the water is good

For some reason, when the water at a restaurant tastes good, I get this sense that the food will be great too. And here, I'd already decided that before the food even arrived, just from the water.

Yep, this place is legit... 😂

It wasn't just filtered water — it was a gently brewed barley tea, and it felt like the kind of small detail they clearly cared about.

## Eel with a charcoal aroma

And then, finally, the eel arrived!

Glossy secret sauce plus that charcoal aroma — there was no way this combination could taste bad.

But Manmok clearly put just as much care into every single side dish that came with the eel.

The steamed egg that came out first had a soft, pudding-like texture, making it a nice light bite before digging into the eel.

### What accompaniments come with it?

There was a whole spread to eat with the eel — wasabi, pickled sansho pepper, pickled radish, pickled ginger — and depending on what you paired it with, the eel tasted slightly different each time, which made the meal more fun.

Sansho powder was also provided, so you could sprinkle on as much as you liked.

The eel kept its distinctive texture while still tasting clean and not greasy at all. The glossy sauce and charcoal aroma made the flavor rich, but it never felt heavy even after eating a lot — I genuinely enjoyed every bite.

## White kimchi, radish salad, and ice cream for dessert

And then, on top of that, white kimchi and radish salad!

How can even the side dishes be this good...!

Usually when the main dish is good, that's enough to leave satisfied, but this time even the side dishes were good one by one, which made the meal even more memorable.

After the meal, dessert was ready too. You could choose between green tea ice cream and black tea ice cream, and one bite brought back memories of that seriously high-quality ice cream I had in Japan.

## Why I want to go back

A meal that was perfect right down to the final dessert.

If you're looking for a nice-atmosphere Japanese restaurant in Daechi-dong, or just want good eel for lunch, this is worth a visit.

The food was great and so was the space — not somewhere you just eat and leave, but a place I'd want to come back to on a day when I want to eat slowly and talk.
