I had errands in Yeonnam-dong by myself on a Saturday, and since I was planning to eat dinner a little late, I wanted a lunch that was not too heavy but still filling and clean-tasting. While looking for somewhere I could dine alone comfortably, I visited Nahonsha (나혼샤), a solo shabu-shabu specialist whose name alone speaks right to solo diners!

## Nahonsha, between Hapjeong and Sangsu stations

It is located almost exactly halfway between Exit 7 of Hapjeong Station and Exit 4 of Sangsu Station (haha). Both stations are close, but I leisurely walked over from Hapjeong!

![Nahonsha's location between Hapjeong and Sangsu stations](https://img.superchart.com/images/hapjeong-solo-shabu-nohonsya/hapjeong-solo-shabu-nohonsya-02-10l9w-900.webp)

Parking is available, but the space is tight, so if you are driving, definitely call the restaurant ahead of time! Parking nearby is inconvenient too, so taking public transit or coming on foot is much less stressful.

- Hours: Monday–Friday 11:30–21:00 (break time 15:00–18:00)
- Saturday opens at 12:00!
- Regular closure: every Sunday
- Closed September 24–26 for the Chuseok holiday
- Naver Reservation available!

There can be quite a wait around Hapjeong at lunchtime, so I recommend making a Naver Reservation in advance! I visited just after the Saturday lunch rush, thankfully, and was seated right away without waiting.

## Counter seating throughout, made for solo dining

When I opened the door and went in, the entire restaurant was lined with counter seating! Each seat had its own built-in induction cooker, so true to Nahonsha's name, it was an atmosphere perfectly suited to coming alone for a meal.

You can eat quietly without feeling self-conscious at all, and I was touched to see a thoughtfully placed phone stand at every seat for solo diners. Watching YouTube while having a meal alone was honestly the best!

## Ordering the clear-broth shabu set

Looking over the menu, basic shabu sets started at ₩14,900 per person, while even the most generous special set was ₩19,900, which felt like excellent value considering prices these days!

In front of the table, sweet chili, peanut, and soy sauces were neatly set out for you to take as you like. I put a little of each into my sauce dish and was all ready to eat!

As soon as I ordered, a one-person pot of clear broth arrived along with neatly presented plates of fresh vegetables and beef. The standard vegetable selection was packed with colorful, satisfying ingredients: bok choy, napa cabbage, kabocha squash, enoki mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, tofu, fried tofu, carrots, and boiled dumplings!

## A light yet deeply flavorful clear broth

The clear broth is said to be made with kelp, katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes), and chicken stock! I added the vegetables, brought it to a boil, then dropped in the meat. After that, I tried a spoonful of broth first, and its clean, deep umami without an artificial seasoning taste was truly excellent. It was refreshing and easy on the stomach, with none of that murky heaviness.

The beef was wonderfully tender, never tough or dry, with a nutty meaty flavor and no unpleasant smell. It was delicious dipped generously in the sweet-spicy chili sauce, and bok choy with yuzu ponzu was an absolutely heavenly combination.

There were boiled dumplings and a topping that seemed like tofu but had a fish-cake-like texture. Along with the vegetables and beef, these tasty toppings came as standard and really brought out the best in the shabu-shabu.

## Finishing with the included kalguksu noodles

Once I had fished out all the vegetables and meat, it was carbohydrate finale time! Nahonsha includes chewy kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) with the standard meal. You can also order extras such as sujebi dough flakes or juk (rice porridge), depending on your preference. With the vegetable and beef flavors steeped richly into the broth, I added the kalguksu and let it cook well; the rich broth soaked right into the noodles, making every bite perfect through the very last one.

Thanks to the phone stand at every seat, Nahonsha was somewhere I could enjoy a leisurely, comfortable meal alone while watching videos! They also sell sujebi for the lunch special, so if you are looking near Hapjeong or Sangsu Station for a great place to eat alone without feeling self-conscious, or for good-value solo shabu-shabu, I definitely recommend stopping by 👍
