## In short

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) and bunsik (Korean street food) restaurant on Yongridan-gil, down an alley from Exit 5 of Sinyongsan Station in Yongsan, Seoul. After trying another branch, the writer came back for the 26,000 won Hyeonseon Combo (squiggly fish cake) set at medium spice, which brought fried mandu (dumplings), sweet potato fritters and a rice-cake skewer in broth tucked in among the fish cake. The wheat rice cakes at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch are chewy enough to rank it top tier.

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a tteokbokki and bunsik restaurant tucked in an alley off exit 5 of Sinyongsan Station, in Yongridan-gil. I'd tried another branch before and thought, "so this is why everyone loves Hyeonseonine," so this time I made my way to the Yongsan main branch too.

There were waiting chairs set up out front for anyone in line.

## How the CatchTable wait works: instant-tteokbokki vs original-tteokbokki teams

You can check the wait on CatchTable. It's split into two teams: instant tteokbokki and original tteokbokki.

The instant tteokbokki option comes with fried rice too, and the Yongsan branch even has dinosaur egg fried eggs.

## What we ordered at Hyeonseonine, and what's on the self-serve bar

I ordered the Hyeonseon Combo (squiggly fish cake) set for dine-in. With a set order, slushies are 1,500 won, in papaya, orange, or Coolpis flavor, and I picked mild spice.

Side dishes and anything else you need come from the self-serve bar. Everything's self-service.

Even though it wasn't lunchtime, the place was pretty packed.

Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki menu board — there's ramen, fries, and a lot of variety.

There was a restroom inside the restaurant too.

Lots of tables and a clean, comfortable interior.

## What's in the 26,000 won Hyeonseonine Combo Set: five parts

The Hyeonseonine Combo Set (squiggly fish cake) is a generous spread of fritters, tteokbokki, mini gimbap, sundae (Korean blood sausage), and fish cake — five components in all. Great for anyone who wants to try a bit of everything. Tteokbokki (spice level selectable) + assorted fritters + mini gimbap + sundae + squiggly fish cake, 3 skewers (fritters cannot be swapped), with squid, kimmari (seaweed roll fritter), sweet potato, and more.

That exciting moment of not knowing what to eat first.

### Fried mandu and sweet potato fritters

Fried mandu (dumplings)! Dipped right in soy sauce. Crispy and delicious. They're also great soaked in the tteokbokki sauce.

Sweet potato fritters are my personal favorite — clean and tasty.

### The main tteokbokki: chewy wheat rice cakes

The main tteokbokki used chewy, springy wheat rice cake. It soaked up the sauce so well I feel like I could eat an endless amount. The chewiness was insane — top-tier among wheat rice cake places.

### Sundae and the squiggly fish cake with a rice-cake skewer

Next up, sundae. It was soft with barely any gaminess, so I ate it happily — including the organ meat and liver. Plenty of fish cake in the tteokbokki too!

The broth was delicious too, and as a bunsik lover I was genuinely happy. There was even rice-based water rice cake hidden in there!! I wasn't expecting it, which made finding it even more of a treat.

### Mini gimbap and the rest of the fritters

The gimbap was just plain good. Packed with all sorts of ingredients — this is exactly what I want from gimbap.

With so much variety to enjoy, I was practically overwhelmed. The kimmari and squid fritters were great too.

The staff were all friendly and efficient. I packed up the leftovers and enjoyed them again at home.

## Next visit: instant tteokbokki cooked at the table

Next time I want to try the instant tteokbokki too. I first went to another branch for its great value and taste, and this time I visited the Yongsan branch — just as satisfying. I'll be back.

Hope everyone has a strong day even when it's tough. Colds are going around lately, so please be careful — take care of yourselves. I felt a bit under the weather and went to the doctor, but thankfully it wasn't the flu.

## Getting to Hyeonseonine from Sinyongsan Station, and parking

Coming out of exit 5 of Sinyongsan Station, walk straight about 5 meters, and at the intersection go straight into the alley between a beer pub and a real estate office — you'll spot the yellow chimney of Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch. There's no dedicated parking, and no parking service is provided, so you'll need to use a paid lot nearby.
