Sokcho tofu restaurant by the toll gate, mild spicy sundubu: Jinsol

In short

Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu (진솔할머니순두부) is a sundubu (soft tofu) restaurant on Wonamhaksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon, close to the Sokcho toll gate and open early in the morning. For a first meal in Sokcho, the writer ordered chodang sundubu and eolkeun (spicy) sundubu: the spicy sundubu was mild enough for people who can't handle heat, and the chodang sundubu was soft, curdy and nutty. For an easy route, a spacious parking lot and a breakfast that's gentle on the stomach, Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is a good fit.

Why Jinsol Halmeoni was our first meal in Sokcho

Jinsol Halmeoni is a sundubu restaurant that sits right on your route as soon as you exit the Sokcho toll gate, so I picked it for the first meal of this Sokcho trip. Every time I head to Sokcho, the first thing I agonize over is what to eat the moment I arrive. I had been curious about Jinsol Halmeoni for a long time, and I finally made it there.

Visiting Jinsol Halmeoni in Sokcho

It started the trip warm and easy on the stomach, so I can recommend it without hesitation as a breakfast stop whenever you visit Sokcho.

Jinsol Halmeoni is really close to the Sokcho toll gate and opens early, so it is perfect for stopping straight off the road for breakfast. After a long drive to Sokcho you get tired and hungry, and here you don't have to detour at all after the toll gate. The route is so smooth that I liked it the moment I arrived.

Is parking easy at Jinsol Halmeoni?

There is plenty of parking right in front of the restaurant, so parking was very easy. The lot holds 30 cars and 8 large buses, so group visits are no problem either.

When you travel by car, finding a popular restaurant often means parking stress. Here the lot and access are comfortable enough that even beginner drivers can pull in without worry, which put me in a good mood from the first impression.

Restaurant size and pets

Inside, the space is really big with lots of tables, so it looks great for group gatherings.

Jinsol Halmeoni also allows pets, so if you are visiting Sokcho with your dog, it is well worth stopping by.

Can spice wimps eat the eolkeun sundubu?

The eolkeun sundubu (spicy soft tofu stew) at Jinsol Halmeoni has "spicy" in the name but isn't that hot, so even I, someone who normally can't handle spicy food, ate it happily. After sitting down and debating, I wanted to try the most basic flavors, so I ordered chodang sundubu (soft tofu made in the Chodang style) and the eolkeun sundubu.

Honestly, I was a little worried that something too intense or spicy so early in the morning would upset my stomach, but that worry was for nothing.

It is nicely kicky, and the nutty flavor of the tofu melts deep into the broth, so it never gets tiring and I ended up scraping the bowl clean, broth and all.

The chodang sundubu and how to eat it

The chodang sundubu had a wonderfully soft, silky texture, and the more I chewed, the more the plain, nutty flavor of the soybeans filled my mouth. You can really feel the skill of Jinsol Halmeoni in it.

It is good with a little of the provided seasoning sauce on top, and just as good scooped up plain, since the gentle nuttiness makes it easy to keep eating.

Tidy side dishes

The banchan (side dishes) served with the meal were neat and tidy too. None of them were overly salty, and they were clean-tasting, pairing wonderfully with the mild tofu,

and thanks to the carefully prepared side dishes, not just the main dishes, it felt like being served a proper spread of grandma's home cooking.

Overall the food isn't harsh at all, which makes it the best kind of easy breakfast.

Why I'd return to Jinsol Halmeoni among Sokcho's sundubu restaurants

Sokcho is so famous for sundubu that it even has a sundubu village, right?

Plenty of people are looking for a great sundubu place or a chodang sundubu specialist, and I think Jinsol Halmeoni works for breakfast and also for a later lunch, with dishes like jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) sundubu or seafood sundubu for a spicy kick.

It is a place I'd happily come back to whenever I want a hearty, warm Sokcho meal or a deeply flavored sundubu jjigae (stew).

Starting this Sokcho trip with the warm, gentle food of Jinsol Halmeoni kept me happy and full all day while traveling.
