I was looking for something simple but filling to eat in Yeouido, and ended up visiting Hyeonseonine's tteokbokki spot in the basement of IFC Mall.

I like tteokbokki in general, and this place is widely known as one of the "three great tteokbokki spots in Seoul," so I'd been curious about it for a while. If you're looking for good food in Yeouido IFC, this is a place you've probably heard of.

## Where is Hyeonseonine Premium IFC Mall Branch? 258m from Yeouido Station Exit 3

Hyeonseonine's IFC Mall branch is located at 10 Gukjegeumyung-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, on basement level 2 of IFC Mall. It's about 258m from Yeouido Station Exit 3, so it was easy to walk there. I especially liked that it's right inside IFC Mall, which makes it convenient to get to — good for office workers on lunch break, and also a good option for a quick meal after shopping or meeting friends.

Coming out of Exit 3 of Yeouido Station, there's a moving walkway you can take, so it was easier to reach IFC Mall than I expected. The store is right next to a GS convenience store, just before you reach IFC Mall via the walkway, so it wasn't hard to find even on my first visit.

Being close to Yeouido Station also makes it easy to reach by public transit, and since there are other shops and restaurants inside IFC Mall, it's nice to wander around before or after eating.

## Inside the freshly renovated Hyeonseonine Premium

Hyeonseonine reportedly started out as a street food cart in 2004 and has been selling tteokbokki for a long time since. It's especially known as a signature tteokbokki spot in Yongsan, and I was impressed that it's run mainly through directly-operated branches to keep the taste and service consistent.

The IFC Mall branch I visited had recently been renovated, so it had a clean, bright overall feel. There's still some of that cozy, old-school snack restaurant charm, but the space itself was fairly tidy and comfortable to eat in.

You might picture a quick in-and-out meal when you think of a Korean snack restaurant, but here the tteokbokki is boiled fresh at your table, so it felt like a fun place to visit with friends or family too.

It came out at lightning speed — almost exactly 3 minutes after we ordered.

The basic instant set for two includes tteokbokki, fish cake, vegetables, jjolmyeon noodles, fried dumplings, and 2 boiled eggs. With a soda added, the total came to 25,000 won.

Once the order arrives, you boil it yourself right at the table, which I think is the fun part of instant tteokbokki — unlike getting a fully cooked dish from the start, you can simmer it exactly as long as you like.

I left out the fried dumplings at first since I figured they'd go soggy while boiling. The broth is fairly generous at the start, but as it simmers the sauce gets thicker and the flavor soaks into the ingredients, so it was fun watching everything cook little by little.

## How spicy is the mild option at Hyeonseonine Premium?

I'm not great with spicy food, so I went with the mild option, and honestly the flavor still had plenty of presence.

Rather than just being spicy, what stood out was the rich, umami-heavy sauce. The rice cakes soaked up the sauce so well that one bite naturally led to the next.

The jjolmyeon noodles kept a nice chewy texture, offering a different kind of fun from the rice cakes, and the fried dumplings tasted even better once they'd absorbed plenty of the tteokbokki sauce.

The boiled eggs paired well with the spicy broth — the plain, mild flavor of the egg went nicely with the spicy, rich sauce, so it was good to eat one in between bites of everything else.

With fish cake and vegetables added in too, the portion was generous enough for two people. And since instant tteokbokki reduces as it simmers, it was interesting how the flavor changed from the first bite to the last.

At first you can taste each ingredient individually, but the longer it simmers, the thicker the sauce gets, and it soaks deeper into the rice cakes, noodles, and dumplings. I thought this would go great with draft beer after work too. So if you're someone who likes mixing in various add-ons and boiling everything together rather than just eating plain tteokbokki, this place is especially well suited to you.
