## In short

Munhwa Bakery is a takeaway bakery in Jongno, Seoul, beside Ikseon-dong Hanok Street. On a rainy weekday lunch visit, I picked up an onion bagel, injeolmi bread and white bean paste bread, then made the bagel even better with salmon. Verdict: a worthwhile bread stop while strolling around Jongno 3-ga and Ikseon-dong.

Whenever I visit somewhere, I always look up a bakery pilgrimage stop nearby, haha. I had lunch around Jongno 3-ga this day, and Munhwa Bakery was right nearby!! I had seen so many people call it their all-time favorite bakery, so I went straight over and bought three breads.

## Munhwa Bakery at the entrance to Ikseon-dong Hanok Street

Munhwa Bakery is on the main road just before entering Ikseon-dong Hanok Street! To the left of Munhwa Bakery is the famous Ikseon-dong street, and to the right is Seosulla-gil. You cannot park in front of the shop, but there is Turu Parking across the street, so it is convenient to come by car and pick something up!

### Hanok storefront and weekday entry

![Hanok-style exterior of Munhwa Bakery](https://img.superchart.com/images/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery-02-sz1qt-966.webp)

I visited after walking along Seosulla-gil, and the pretty hanok-style shop across the street caught my eye. Plus, there was even a standing “bread” sign out front, haha. When I crossed over, it was Munhwa Bakery! A notice on the door said that only two parties can enter at a time because the interior is small, but luckily I got in right away—it was weekday lunchtime and raining! I hear the wait is long on weekends.

## A takeaway-only shop with breads on display

There is nowhere to eat inside; it is takeaway only! Breads were displayed along the long, narrow shop, and you paid at the very back. Munhwa Bakery makes and sells its breads the same day, and says it donates leftover bread to hungry children, elderly people living alone, people with disabilities, free meal centers, homeless shelters and social welfare facilities. Places like this deserve to thrive even more!!

If you need a paper shopping bag, just ask the staff when paying, and there were sample breads at the counter too!! They even give you a salt bread for a Naver receipt review!! I did not see salt bread on the display, and now I wish I had left a review and gotten one...

## Munhwa Bakery’s bread menu and my three picks

They do not sell drinks here—only bread for takeaway!

- ₩3,500 milk cream bread, walnut bread
- ₩3,800 injeolmi bread (rice cake-inspired bread), peanut bread, black sesame bread, sweet potato bread, white bean paste bread
- ₩4,500 squid ink condensed milk bread
- ₩4,900 maple cream cheese bread
- ₩5,400 cheese bread
- ₩5,700 mugwort rice cake bread
- ₩5,800 chestnut rice loaf, coffee bread
- ₩5,900 rice cheese loaf
- ₩6,000 onion bagel
- ₩6,800 garlic bread

If I had to pick this place’s top three items, they seem to be the ₩6,800 garlic bread, ₩6,000 onion bagel and ₩5,800 coffee bread!!

I am always the type who does not follow the crowd, haha, so I bought three things: the onion bagel, injeolmi bread and white bean paste bread. They put them in a shopping bag for me!

## Onion bagel made even better with salmon

![Onion bagel with walnuts and black sesame](https://img.superchart.com/images/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery-11-1douj-966.webp)

First up, the onion bagel! It is enormous—much bigger than a regular bagel. The dough is mixed with walnuts and sprinkled with black sesame, and the outside is very crisp!

![Bagel filled with onion cream cheese](https://img.superchart.com/images/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery-12-1nkhu-966.webp)

![Onion bagel topped with salmon and vegetables](https://img.superchart.com/images/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery-13-rftwa-966.webp)

When I opened it, there was onion-scented cream cheese spread inside, and the sweet flavor was so good. After one bite, I thought... it would taste absolutely amazing as a salmon bagel, so I added only salmon, tomato and arugula. Ah, it was seriously delicious and so satisfyingㅠㅠ If you have salmon at home, definitely tuck it inside this bagel!!

## White bean paste bread to pull apart like flower petals

![Flower-shaped white bean paste bread](https://img.superchart.com/images/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery-14-pxywm-966.webp)

The white bean paste bread felt like a white-bean version of danpatppang (sweet red bean bun)!! But instead of a round bun with filling inside, it was flower-shaped, with each piece filled with white bean paste like pizza cheese bites!

![White bean paste bread with filling in each piece](https://img.superchart.com/images/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery-15-yvmsj-966.webp)

That made it fun to pull off and eat one piece at a time, like petals, haha. The bread was nicely golden and chewy on the outside, while the inner crumb was very soft. I loved that it was generously filled with sweet white bean paste. I had been craving danpatppang for days, and this really hit the spot! The black sesame in the center was nutty and lovely too.

## Injeolmi bread coated well with soybean powder

![Round injeolmi bread coated in soybean powder](https://img.superchart.com/images/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery-16-1uaaq-966.webp)

The injeolmi bread looked like a round bun rolled in soybean powder. It felt like a giant injeolmi (chewy rice cake coated in soybean powder)!! But the powder was stuck firmly to the bread, so it did not fall everywhere, which I loved, haha. That did not mean there was only a little powder, either!

![Cross-section of injeolmi bread cut in half](https://img.superchart.com/images/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery-17-8zbyd-966.webp)

![Injeolmi bread filling with cream and red bean paste](https://img.superchart.com/images/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery/ikseondong-injeolmi-baekanggeum-bakery-18-owznf-966.webp)

When I cut it in half, it was packed with white cream and red bean filling, and the bread layer was really thin. There were occasional whole beans in the filling, while the cream had a soft, fluffy texture and was not overly sweet, which was nice! Rather than feeling pillowy-soft, the bread had more of a rice-cake-like chew, so it really did feel like eating injeolmi. Very satisfying!

## A satisfying weekday bread takeaway in Ikseon-dong

I came because I was craving red bean bread, but the onion bagel was so delicious that I found an all-time favorite bakery. Of course, the injeolmi bread and white bean paste bread were also so, so good! Ikseon-dong is always busy, but I visited on a weekday and could buy everything right away—lucky, haha. Next time I want to try the mugwort rice cake bread and squid ink condensed milk bread!!
