## In short

Cheonsangae Jangeoga is an eel restaurant in Jungnang, Seoul, between Sagajeong and Myeonmok stations. I visited with my mom for a generously sized, staff-grilled eel meal with ginseng cultured roots, sushi, doenjang-jjigae, and Seolhwa mushrooms; lunch for two is 59,000 won on weekdays. Cheonsangae Jangeoga is a comfortable pick for a meal with parents.

The weather has been slowly warming up, so I took my mom out for something delicious for the first time in a while. Maybe it is because the weather is in that awkward in-between stage, but I was craving something restorative—and what comes to mind at a time like this if not eel? Haha.

So this time, I visited Cheonsangae Jangeoga Myeonmok Sagajeong Branch (천상애장어가 면목사가정점). I was looking for somewhere good to take my parents, and it was a satisfying place where we could enjoy properly grilled eel.

Cheonsangae Jangeoga sits between Sagajeong Station and Myeonmok Station. Both are within walking distance, so getting there by public transportation was easy enough too.

## A restaurant atmosphere that is great for bringing parents

More than anything, I loved how neat and refined the interior felt as soon as we walked in. There were four-person tables as well as large group tables, so it looked suitable not only for family meals but also for work dinners and gatherings.

Food matters when you take your parents out, of course, but a place that is too loud or hectic can feel a little overwhelming. This one was tidy overall, so I think it would also suit anyone looking for a gathering spot at a good Sagajeong restaurant.

## Menu and side dishes

Here is the Cheonsangae Jangeoga menu. The standard set is ₩79,000 for two, but it is ₩59,000 at weekday lunch—such a bargain! My mom immediately saved it, saying, “I should come back for lunch with my friends next time,” haha.

So if you are looking for a good lunch in Myeonmok-dong, visiting during the lunch-special hours could be a nice option. Plus, the fact that guests aged 80 and over and pregnant guests get eel for free was such a huge surprise. It would be great for a family gathering with Grandma or a meal with parents. What a kind restaurant... let’s make them rich!!

The basic table setting was quite varied too. There were ssam vegetables for wrapping, dressed chives, perilla-leaf pickles, chili-pepper pickles, ginseng cultured roots, shredded ginger, and eel sauce—an all-around great selection to have with the eel.

There was also a separate self-service station, which made it convenient to help ourselves to any side dishes we needed. You tend to go through lots of shredded ginger and wrap vegetables with eel, so I loved being able to refill without feeling self-conscious~

## How was the eel platter for two?

Soon the eel arrived, and first of all, it was seriously huge!! What I especially loved was that the staff grilled it for us. It would be such a shame to ruin good eel after working hard to grill it, just because I burned it myself, right? Haha.

They grilled it to just the right point, so we could simply chat comfortably while we waited.

Then they lined up the fully grilled eel so neatly across the grill, and the visual impact was just exploding~ I wanted to put it in my mouth immediately...

Finally, I tried a bite of the fully grilled eel. For the first bite, I went with the classic rule: eel with shredded ginger and eel sauce! They call it Seolhwa wild-ginseng freshwater eel grilled directly over charcoal, and it really had a subtle charcoal aroma worked into it. So delicious.

The pieces were big and the flesh was thick, so even one piece felt quite filling. The rich yet clean-tasting eel paired with shredded ginger cut through any richness, and I just kept eating it.

For my second bite, I had it with the precious ginseng cultured roots~ Adding them to the eel somehow made it feel like I was really giving my body a proper boost, haha.

It was delicious wrapped in lettuce, delicious wrapped in perilla leaf, and went well either dipped in eel sauce or eaten with shredded ginger. There was a pretty generous amount too, which was satisfying for the two of us!

## Doenjang-jjigae, Seolhwa mushrooms, sushi, and eoriguljeot

![Doenjang stew, sushi, and seasoned young oysters served with eel](https://img.superchart.com/images/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae-14-x9yuw-808.webp)

Along with the eel, we enjoyed the doenjang-jjigae (soybean-paste stew), sushi, and eoriguljeot (seasoned young oysters) that came out midway through the meal.

![Sushi and seasoned young oysters enjoyed with eel](https://img.superchart.com/images/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae-16-3u86z-900.webp)

I am especially crazy about oysters, so the eoriguljeot was unbelievably good to me, haha. It was fragrant and salty, and it paired with the eel better than I expected. Eel and its ocean friend, oyster—a combination that works~

I also put a piece of eel on the sushi and ate it like eel sushi, and wow, it was so good. An absolutely unbeatable combination!

Eel and sushi went together so much better than expected that we ended up ordering extra sushi specifically to make more eel sushi, haha.

The doenjang-jjigae was pleasantly spicy and deeply savory, so it was nice to spoon up here and there while eating the eel.

![Seolhwa mushrooms grilled on the barbecue grill](https://img.superchart.com/images/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae-21-yp9oz-900.webp)

![Seolhwa mushroom accompaniment infused with charcoal aroma](https://img.superchart.com/images/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae-22-psqrl-900.webp)

The Seolhwa mushrooms grilled alongside the eel were a special treat too. They are white wood-ear mushrooms, an ingredient I had only ever seen in mala tang, but this was my first time realizing how delicious they are grilled! Their texture was great, and the charcoal aroma really soaked in, making them perfect to eat between bites of eel.

![Information about packing leftover eel](https://img.superchart.com/images/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae-23-u6wq1-900.webp)

After my mom and I had our fill of eel, we wanted to pack up the rest—and there was actually an option on the menu specifically for packing leftover eel, haha. The portion really was generous, and it seemed like quite a few people took some home.

![Charcoal-grilled potatoes brought home](https://img.superchart.com/images/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae/sagajeong-eel-family-meal-cheonsangae-24-1ko28-966.webp)

At the end, you are supposed to eat the potatoes that had been roasting beneath the charcoal like dessert, but we were already so full that I took the potatoes home, haha. When I ate them at home, they were fluffy and so delicious too.

From eel to mushrooms, sushi, doenjang-jjigae, and finally potatoes, it truly felt like enjoying a full-course meal~ The weather was warming up, and after giving my mom a proper nourishing meal, I felt great too.

If you are looking for a family dining spot or family gathering venue with your parents, or somewhere to host older relatives for a 60th or 70th birthday celebration, the neat atmosphere and ample seating make this seem like a good choice. It is also a nice spot for eel and a drink near Sagajeong Station, and the lunch special makes it more affordable at lunchtime, so it is worth keeping in mind.
