## In short

Boriook Main Branch is an all-you-can-eat barley rice restaurant on Yeongtong-ro 200beon-gil, near Mangpo Station in Suwon. Back from a trip to Kota Kinabalu and craving proper Korean food, the writer returned for the 13,000 won barley rice set with eight self-serve namul (seasoned vegetable) sides, four kinds of fritters, and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). Dinner was calmer than the lunch rush at Boriook, and the terrace seats looking out over the park and city made it the best table in the house.

After finishing our trip to Kota Kinabalu, we debated where to get our first proper Korean meal, and we both agreed on Boriook. It's a bit far from home, but we remembered enjoying it so much last time that we made the trip back to this Mangpo Station favorite!

The only downside here is the distance from home! Aside from that, it's an all-you-can-eat spot where you can fill up on everything from savory doenjang jjigae to a wide variety of healthy namul (seasoned vegetable) side dishes.

## Where is Boriook Main Branch? Hours and parking

Boriook Main Branch is at 99 Yeongtong-ro 200beon-gil, 1st floor, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, near Mangpo Station. It's open daily from 10:00 to 21:00, with a break time from 16:30 to 17:00, and there's parking for 8 cars in front of the store.

At lunchtime it's packed so tight there's barely room to stand, but in the evening it's noticeably calmer.

At Boriook, one menu item per person is required, and once you order, staff bring the doenjang jjigae and rice to your table. If you join the receipt review event, you can get a free neobiani (grilled beef), so it's not a bad idea to snag a bonus side to go with your meal, right?

## Boriook menu and prices

Boriook is essentially a single-menu barley rice buffet, so all you really need to do is check the headcount, though there are a few side dishes you can order extra. The barley rice set is ₩13,000, the mackerel set is ₩15,000, and the pork set is ₩16,000.

## What is on the self-serve bar: eight namul sides and four fritters

At Boriook's self-serve bar, aside from kimchi and lotus root, there are a total of eight namul (seasoned vegetable) sides for making bibimbap with barley rice. Preparing all of these at home would take a lot of time and money, and even though dining out has gotten pricier lately, for two people the cost feels about the same.

On top of that, there's spicy braised tofu, acorn jelly, and japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) to go with everything, plus four kinds of fritters — pumpkin, sweet potato, chili pepper, and lotus root — which the kids seemed to love too.

By the time you bring your namul back from the self-serve bar, the savory doenjang jjigae will already be waiting on your table.

When we first sat down, the table had just one empty plate and two bowls of barley rice — now it's completely full!

## How does the barley bibimbap taste once you mix it?

Boriook's barley bibimbap comes together by piling the namul onto the rice, then finishing with sesame oil and gochujang (red chili paste), in that order. Sometimes you pile the namul on and forget to drizzle the sesame oil, so I went ahead and circled it around first.

Add gochujang as the finishing touch and the barley rice is complete! Seeing all the colorful namul come together made me think of the abundant Chuseok holiday coming up.

![A bowl of mixed barley bibimbap](https://img.superchart.com/images/bori-ok-mangpo-barley-buffet-terrace/bori-ok-mangpo-barley-buffet-terrace-15-7viv3-900.webp)

You could really feel the chewy texture of the barley, and with the subtle bitterness of the doraji (bellflower root) added in, it felt like a truly proper Korean meal — very satisfying. Trying local food abroad and experiencing a country's culture through its cuisine is great, of course, but for someone Korean to the bone, Korean food is still the best.

Some of the perilla leaves were nearly the size of a face, but I found a smaller one and wrapped a bite in it.

Taking a sip of soup while eating rice helps with digestion, doesn't it? Maybe from being simmered a long time, the zucchini in the doenjang was soft, and the broth wasn't salty at all — it felt wholesome through and through.

After finishing one bowl of rice, I got a bit more barley rice. Mixing it into bibimbap is great, but eating warm plain rice with a piece of tangy kimchi on top has its own charm too. The kimchi was packed with chili flakes and pretty spicy, but kimchi that isn't spicy isn't really kimchi, right?

I was so absorbed in eating that I didn't properly introduce everything at the self-serve bar ^^ Besides the eight namul we already piled onto our plates, there's also napa cabbage kimchi, japchae, spicy braised tofu, acorn jelly, perilla leaves, and boiled cabbage said to be good for the stomach. My wife used to boil a lot of cabbage for her health once ^^

Barley rice is naturally the popular choice, but for anyone who doesn't like the slightly rough texture in their mouth, there's white rice too!

## Rice puffs for dessert and the park-view terrace seats

The puffed rice snacks and barley crackers you can nibble on after your meal at Boriook aren't doled out in small portions — they're piled high in a huge bamboo bucket. So you can grab as much as you want without feeling shy about it!

![Dessert coffee and plum tea corner](https://img.superchart.com/images/bori-ok-mangpo-barley-buffet-terrace/bori-ok-mangpo-barley-buffet-terrace-22-sgd1r-900.webp)

After eating your fill, you can also grab a coffee or a cup of plum or peach tea. Sitting comfortably inside the store to enjoy it isn't bad, but

why not sit at the terrace seat overlooking the park and city view right out front and take your time instead? These evenings have gotten cool enough that the terrace seats feel even better lately. Boriook, the all-you-can-eat barley rice favorite in Mangpo, seems to be doing great business — I'd love it if a second branch opened near our place.
