The moment I walked into Dongyang Baekban, it felt like I'd really arrived in Gyeongju. The tiled roof, wooden lattice doors, and checkered-tile courtyard all being hanok style really pulled the mood together.

Step inside and the solid wood floors and furniture catch your eye first. A white porcelain moon jar, a cabinet with an old mother-of-pearl-lacquer look, a folk painting of a tiger, and even old-school candy toys — every little prop felt carefully chosen.

The inside was bigger than I expected. Each space is divided into rooms with solid wood tables and chairs, and some seats look straight out onto the Hwangridan-gil street view — my mood lifted the second I sat down.

Dongyang Baekban's signature dishes range from chicken hot pot to chicken stew.

### Chicken stew (dakbokkeumtang)

Big chunks of potato and carrot with chewy chicken, simmered down in a spicy sauce until barely any liquid remains. It's made with a beef bone broth base, so I'm told the broth is richer and deeper than a typical chicken stew.

### Chicken hot pot (dakjeongol)

A hot pot simmered in plenty of beef bone broth with chicken, various vegetables, and a generous amount of enoki mushrooms. It comes with big oyster mushrooms too, and since it's boneless, I'm told it's easy to eat.

## What we ordered: special chicken stew with chili rice and pollack roe rice

We ordered the special chicken stew along with chili rice and pollack roe rice. There are also set menus, so you can eat well without spending too much.

The side dishes were kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), bean sprouts, garlic scapes, and braised beans. Not too salty and clean-tasting, so they balanced well with the main dish.

### Pollack roe rice (myeongnanbap)

The pollack roe rice comes with a mound of rice topped with a whole salty chunk of pollack roe. Mixed in with scallions and sesame seeds, it kept pulling me back for more — salty and savory. I love pollack roe, so this was extremely satisfying. Highly recommend for pollack roe fanatics..♡

### Cheongyang chili rice (ttaengchobap)

The chili rice comes topped with a sautéed sauce of minced cheongyang chili, garlic, and sesame seeds, and the spiciness hits hard right away. Recommended if you like spicy food. The portion felt right for me, but adult men might find it a bit small.

### How the special chicken stew tasted

It comes out simmered down in a stone pot, and the sight of piled-up enoki mushrooms and soft-boiled egg immediately caught my attention.

The tomato flavor wasn't super pronounced, but the savoriness was richer than a regular chicken stew, and the broth was perfect for mixing into rice.

## What was good and what fell short at Dongyang Baekban

- ✅ Uncommon topping-rice options like pollack roe rice and cheongyang chili rice
- ✅ Close to the main street of Hwangridan-gil, easy to fit into a sightseeing route.
- ✔ The potatoes are a bit thick, so it takes a while for the sauce to soak in.
- ✔️ A single bowl of rice is a bit small for adult men.

If you want to enjoy hanok charm along with a hearty meal on Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil, Dongyang Baekban is worth a stop. Being able to choose your own rice made it even more satisfying. If you're visiting Hwangridan-gil, give it a try!
