## In short

Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung University Branch is a Korean restaurant in Dalseo, Daegu, directly across from the main gate of Keimyung University. Hyangtaek has no dedicated parking lot, so the writer parked in a nearby alley, arrived for weekday lunch, and was seated ahead of groups of three or more as a party of two, ordering eggplant doenjang rice bowl, mackerel gondre rice and the free opening-event galbi platter. Parking is the weak point, but the food and the generous service dishes make Hyangtaek an easy lunch recommendation.

I went on a trip to Gyeongju not long ago and found out Hyangtaek had a branch there too. Hyangtaek is already famous in Daegu, so seeing it spread all the way to Gyeongju made me weirdly proud. I'd been meaning to go someday, and then I heard a new branch opened near Keimyung University in Seongseo, Daegu, so I visited.

## Where is Hyangtaek in Daegu, and where do you park?

Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung University Branch is at 71 Hosan-dong-ro 35buk-gil, Dalseo-gu, Daegu, 1st floor, right across from the main gate of Keimyung University (Seongseo campus). Hours are Monday–Saturday 11:00–20:00, with a break time from 15:30 to 17:00, and last order at 15:00 and 19:30. Closed Sundays.

There's no dedicated parking lot. You can fit maybe 1–2 cars in front, or you'll need to use nearby alley or park parking.

Probably because it's near Keimyung University, even on a weekday afternoon there was a wait, mostly students. Parking in the nearby alleys is a hassle, so you might want to leave the car behind or come a bit early to scope out a table. We ended up parking in the alley!

## How long is the weekday lunch wait for two at Hyangtaek?

I was worried about the waitlist since we only had a short lunch break, but the people ahead of us were parties of three or more, so as a group of two, we got seated first!

Seating ranges from tables for two up to group seating for six.

The tables weren't cramped either, so it was easy to move around.

## What we ordered at Hyangtaek, plus the opening event

At Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung Branch, we ordered mackerel gondre rice (samchi gondre-bap) and eggplant doenjang rice (gaji doenjang deopbap). For the opening event, they're giving out a free galbi platter, and if you write a Naver review, you also get a free mushroom platter — hurry over before it ends!

While waiting, I scanned ahead to check the recommended way to eat the food.

Simple side dishes came out. Top: the soy sauce is for adjusting the seasoning on the mackerel gondre rice, and bottom: the vinegar is for the eggplant doenjang rice. Mine was seasoned just right, so I didn't add any extra.

In the meantime, they also shared the restroom location and door code.

## How does Hyangtaek's eggplant doenjang rice bowl taste?

The dish I was most looking forward to — eggplant doenjang rice! The eggplant pieces were bigger than I expected. The pre-scored eggplant cut easily with just a spoon.

Mixing the doenjang (soybean paste) and chives that came with it, then eating it together with the eggplant, was really delicious. It's not a flavor that's likely to be love-it-or-hate-it, so if you like eggplant, you should definitely try this!

## Mackerel gondre rice wrapped in gopchang gim (crinkled laver)

For the mackerel gondre rice, you mash up the mackerel and mix it in — the staff had already removed the bones, but be careful just in case! Honestly the mackerel itself wasn't that flavorful on its own, but make sure to wrap it with the gopchang gim (crinkled seaweed) and soy sauce that come with it. Eaten together with the gondre (dried aster greens), it was so good!

## The free galbi platter at Hyangtaek: is it really this much?

The galbi platter is way too big to be a freebie...? (I was touched.) It looked like it had been grilled with a sweet soy glaze. This is genuinely a crowd-pleaser side, I'd recommend it without hesitation, and it was still tasty even cold!

Overall, everything was easy on the stomach, which was nice for a no-fuss lunch. Next time I want to try my favorite, yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef tartare bibimbap) — the table next to us was eating it and it looked amazing.

Since it just opened not long ago, the food takes a little while to come out, but the taste is definitely there, so stop by when you have time!

Highly recommend Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung Branch!
