## In short

India Darbar is an Indian restaurant in Gwanak, Seoul, near Sillim Station. We tried prawn makhani, chicken malai tikka, and chicken masala with children trying Indian curry for the first time, and they even loved the lassi. Verdict: a wonderfully easy first Indian-curry meal with kids.

## The day we went to try Indian curry with the kids for the first time

My fourth- and sixth-grade kids had never tried Indian curry before. I was sad that they had not yet tried Indian food, which I absolutely love, so I had wanted to take them out for it together.

But would a child who will not even touch either Japanese-style or Korean-style curry like Indian curry? I checked that there were safe chicken dishes in case it really was not to their taste, and thought, well, we have a Plan B, so let’s go.

It is on the second floor of the building next to Baskin-Robbins at Sillim Intersection. Parking support is available when you dine.

## A menu that is easy for first-time kids to choose from

The menu listed the dish names, ingredients, and photos, so ordering was really easy. For kids trying Indian food for the first time especially, the ingredients and photos of the finished dishes were such a huge help. And of course, the spice levels were marked too.

Since it was their first time, the kids took a while to order as they carefully studied the menu. Maybe because they are growing up now, they were so interested in it. They looked at everything so closely... hehe.

The atmosphere at India Darbar Sillim Branch is India and Nepal itself. Above all, it seemed to be run by locals. With children there too, even more so. How should I put it? The kids loved feeling as though they were on an overseas trip.

Even the guests who came in while we ate—a family that looked Indian, travelers who looked Western, and Korean couples—made the whole restaurant feel like we had traveled somewhere exotic abroad. The kids were even more excited because of it.

And because the season was nice, they had opened the windows wide. There were no insect screens on the windows, so the view felt so open and refreshing that I felt refreshed too. I would never dare open the insect screens at home, but seeing them open at a restaurant felt breezy, new, and lovely.

## What two adults and two kids chose

> <What two adults and two kids ordered>
> Set A for one (naan, rice, lassi, two pieces of chicken tikka, green salad, chicken masala): ₩17,500
> Chicken Malai Tikka: ₩14,500
> Naan: ₩2,900
> Prawn Makhani: ₩14,500

![Set A for one](https://img.superchart.com/images/sillim-india-darbar-kids-curry/sillim-india-darbar-kids-curry-11-1sj8p-900.webp)

This is the set for one. It lets you taste a variety of things, so it seemed perfect for visiting alone. They also have larger sets for groups when several people are struggling over what to order, so when you really cannot decide, choosing a group set from the menu could be a good idea.

One child likes spicy food, so we deliberately chose chicken masala. The green salad dressing was mango-based. It was so tangy, sweet, and delicious—just right for a child’s tastes too.

## Prawn makhani that the child who never ate curry enjoyed

Prawn makhani is a mild shrimp curry made with fresh tomato sauce, cream, and herbs. It was not spicy at all, so I chose it hoping that the child who cannot eat spicy food might perhaps try curry.

And in the end, that child ate it so, so, so, so, so well. Hahahahaha. A child who had never eaten curry at all liking curry this much—can that really happen?

Compared with the curry in the set for one, the main-dish curry portion was really generous. The bowl looks small, but it was like a magic pot that just kept giving, no matter how much we ate.

Since we had come to an Indian restaurant, I think it was a good call to include one set for one so we could try the lassi. The kids said the lassi was so delicious. Hahaha. It is the kind of flavor kids cannot help but like.

## Chicken malai tikka that was not dry

Chicken malai tikka is boneless chicken-breast barbecue marinated in cheese, cream, and mild spices, then grilled over charcoal. I ordered it in case the child would not eat curry. I thought tandoori chicken might taste spicy, so we went with chicken malai tikka instead—and it was much tastier than tandoori chicken.

Even the cabbage underneath was so delicious. It was the kind of dish that made me wonder why I had never had chicken prepared this deliciously before.

Chicken breast can sometimes feel dry, but India Darbar’s chicken-breast barbecue made me think, this is chicken breast? Honestly, when we go to a chicken restaurant, the kids eat the drumsticks first. I had never seen them eat chicken breast, but at India Darbar Sillim Branch they said it was so good and ate it up. So perhaps it was never about the cut, but the cook’s skill... haha.

The complimentary side dishes came in such pretty bowls too, which seemed to make diners feel even happier. There were jalapeños, danmuji (pickled yellow radish), and onions. The onions looked spicy, but they were not spicy at all; if anything, they were savory, I suppose. Even the kids who cannot eat spicy food enjoyed them.

Oh. Looking at it now, the bowl the chicken came in is Le Creuset!!!!!! Eek!!!! I have wanted a Le Creuset casserole dish lately and must have picked one up and put it back down at least 20 times. Maybe it tasted even better because it was cooked in such a nice dish.

## A Sillim Indian restaurant I want to revisit with the kids

It was such a happy meal with the kids. The four of us cleared every last bit. Hahahahahaha. The kids liked Indian curry so much that I think we will have to go again soon.

Above all, the lunch set was incredibly affordable at ₩13,500. Next time, I want to visit at lunchtime and try the lunch set with the kids too. The children trying Indian food for the first time ate it so deliciously that taking them made me happy too. I have stocked up on Gwanak-gu Zero Pay, so I will be going back soon to use it ^_^
