## Thursday-night pork belly dinner with the kids

After that cute phase when they used to say they weren't coming along for meals out, the kids have started enjoying Thursday nights out. Dad was busy with work, so the three girls set off for delicious pork belly! Kkotdwaeji Restaurant is popular, so I booked ahead—but Dad casually asked which barbecue place we were going to, then said if it was Kkotdwaeji, he wanted to go too... (Suddenly?)

There is a parking lot behind the restaurant. (It fits no less than 10 cars, so parking is easy!) I came after work, and the restaurant was already full with office dinner gatherings, but after one loop around the alley, I found good spaces here and there. Hyeon's mom and my husband, who arrived late, both parked nearby and came in. It has been a beloved restaurant since 2016—officially selected by Gumi City, awarded at the ramen festival, and even recognized by Blue Ribbon Survey. Location: 12 Indongjungang-ro 1-gil, Gumi-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do / Hours: daily 11:30–24:00 / Last order: 23:00.

## A reserved table and the Gourmet Set

Even when you reserve through Naver and visit restaurants, there are plenty of places that make you wonder whether they really saved your seat, right? Here, there was a name card at a great table and everything was set up right on time. I was reaching for the side dishes before we had even ordered.

My husband arrived about five minutes late, so I briefly considered waiting to ask him before ordering. But what was there to ask? At Kkotdwaeji Restaurant, of course it had to be the Gourmet Set. Its premium pork belly, premium pork neck, premium pork jowl, gochujang stew, and garnishes come with a generous 600g of meat—a lineup with the kind of detail you'd expect from a signature menu.

## Self-bar sides and grilling service

Before the meat came out, I trotted straight to the self-bar. On my last visit, I saw it and couldn't be bothered because there were already so many sides, but everyone in Gumi needs to know: there are lots of side dishes that taste great with meat and just as good on their own. I brought back refreshing olive kimchi, crisp summer cucumber salad, sancho chive kimchi, and mala seasoned stem lettuce, which I'd been curious about for ages. There were also cherry tomatoes that are tasty as dessert or grilled on the plate, plus yogurt that is perfect after the meal.

You can tell the meat is good just by looking at it, can't you? They say they select only cuts with more than 10% marbling. The Gourmet Set is the sort of meat where juices burst in your mouth the moment you take a bite of a nicely grilled piece. The garnishes include baked beans, mushrooms, and potatoes—things the kids like too.

The biggest reason I wanted to bring just the kids was the grilling service, of course. There seem to be more staff here than at other barbecue restaurants, so requests are handled quickly. They grill a whole platter so you can eat comfortably, making it great for family meals or group dinners when you want to focus only on eating the meat.

Once they place kimchi, seasoned chives, seasoned bean sprouts, bracken fern, and that wonderfully funky myeolchi jeot (fermented anchovy sauce) in the middle, you are ready for meat. They make up a platter ready to eat; it is delicious straight away, or you can let it cook a little longer.

They served the premium pork jowl first so the kids could eat easily, and I had a bite with seed jeotgal (salted seafood). I had another bite of cabbage georaegi salad, which was delicious even on its own, with just a tiny dip in salt.

Before coming, I thought I would eat a reasonable amount without overeating, but the moment we started, I knew getting home easily tonight was unlikely. I added the gochujang stew included in the Gourmet Set, tucked in fresh wasabi that zinged at the tip of my nose, and ate perilla-leaf wraps too. For Hyeon's mom, who loves piling on all sorts of sides, Kkotdwaeji Restaurant is heaven. If Dad had said from the start that he was coming, we would have come in one car—but all I could do was regret not being able to have beer.

## Hanwoo tripe ramen and salted-seafood fried rice

You have to eat the olive kimchi with the meat twice. It is good between bites almost like a pickle, and with the meat it tastes so much more refined—one of those things I would buy to take home if they sold it by the tub. These days, I learn all sorts of things from the little ones while eating meat too; watching my eldest pile on toppings, I tried lots of different combinations myself.

Because I like something brothy, I chose the Hanwoo tripe ramen, ₩9,000, for dessert from the two ramen-festival entries (brothy or stir-fried—choose your preference~). It uses fresh noodles, and you can eat chewy kelp alongside them almost like noodles. With a garlic-forward feel and Hanwoo tripe, it is a recommended menu item with a satisfyingly rich broth.

We laughed so hard for ages. My second child had been saying she was full and looking at her phone after eating some meat, but the moment she saw the ramen, she suddenly started a full-on eating spree. It was a little spicy, yet she kept asking for more, so my husband eventually joined the ₩3,500 salted-seafood fried rice that Hyeon's mom had ordered.

They finely chop the remaining ingredients on the grill and stir-fry them in, so the fried rice is much tastier if you save some meat and ingredients for it. Salted seafood is the base, but rather than saltiness, it has an irresistible savory depth; the lightly crisped bits are nutty, too. After eating like this, we definitely came out with our yogurts for a cheers.

The whole family was out and it was time to clear the table, but I couldn't find my eldest. There she was, still sitting there, eating the remaining fried rice as if she were going to bore a hole through the grill. Hahaha. We promised to come again next time and headed home.
