## In short

Yetgoeul Sundubu is a tofu restaurant in Sokcho, Gangwon, serving breakfast and welcoming pets. On a Gangwon-do trip with the cool sea breeze of the East Sea against you, tasting warm, pillowy traditional tofu dishes is an absolutely unmissable healing course, right? Once you come to Sokcho, it is hard to pass by Haksapyeong Sundubu Street, lined with tofu specialty restaurants.

Among all those places, I visited Yetgoeul Sundubu (옛고을순두부), one of Sokcho’s standout local restaurants, renowned by both locals and travelers for its deeply homey cooking! From spicy abalone jjamppong sundubu loaded with seafood, to clear Chodang sundubu bursting with the natural nuttiness of soybeans, to buckwheat jeonbyeong that is crisp outside and chewy within—I tried it all myself. Let me round up the location, spacious parking lot, seasonal opening hours, full menu prices, and tips for using the private pet-friendly room!

## Yetgoeul Sundubu location and breakfast hours in Sokcho

It is at 114 Wonamhaksapyeong-gil, in the heart of the Haksapyeong Sundubu Village in Nohak-dong, Sokcho. There is a large dedicated parking lot right in front of and beside the restaurant. Even new drivers or families arriving in a large SUV can park with plenty of room and no stress.

- Peak season (May–October): daily 07:00–19:30, last order 19:00
- Off-season (November–April): daily 08:00–19:30, last order 19:00

One of the biggest draws here is that it opens as early as 7–8 a.m.! It is the perfect breakfast spot if you arrive in Sokcho early and want to fill up before starting your itinerary, or if you need a refreshing hangover meal after drinks the night before.

## A private pet-friendly room for dining with your dog

When you travel with a dog, choosing a restaurant can be stressful—there are only so many places you can go, and you always feel a little self-conscious. But this restaurant has a private pet-friendly room, neatly separated by glass doors inside the main building! With a dedicated space for pups, I could eat comfortably without worrying about the gaze of regular diners.

### Basic rules for guests with pets

- A leash or carrier (cage) is required
- For safety, dogs that bark excessively must wait outside temporarily
- Do not feed human food on the table to pets
- Confirmation of regular vaccinations, including rabies, is required

The considerate etiquette rules were well established, making this a warm space where both families with pets and other visitors could enjoy their time.

## Menu items with pot rice and what I ordered

Looking over the official menu posted large on the wall, I loved the hearty setup: one dish per person is recommended, and freshly cooked pot rice comes with the meals.

- Meals including pot rice: abalone jjamppong sundubu (spicy) ₩19,000, Chodang sundubu (mild) ₩14,000, spicy sundubu ₩16,000, dried pollack hangover soup ₩15,000, sirloin tofu steak (for children) ₩14,000

I ordered the popular combination here: abalone jjamppong sundubu (₩19,000), Chodang sundubu (₩14,000), and buckwheat jeonbyeong (₩10,000) on the side!

## Neat side dishes that make you finish a whole bowl of rice

Before the mains arrived, neat side dishes filled the table, and I was surprised the moment I tasted each one! Tourist-area restaurants often serve side dishes just for show, but here, from seasoned stir-fried greens to kimchi and pickled vegetables, everything was not overly seasoned yet full of clean, deep savoriness.

Every side dish was clearly made with care. Honestly, these alone were enough to finish a whole bowl of hot pot rice in no time. They proved the true quality of this excellent Sokcho restaurant before the main dishes even arrived.

## How the abalone jjamppong sundubu and Chodang sundubu tasted

Soon, the main dishes appeared alongside steaming hot pot rice!

### Abalone jjamppong sundubu loaded with seafood

A plump, generous whole abalone sat appetizingly on top of the earthenware bowl, while mussels, shrimp, webfoot octopus, and more seafood filled the broth—I could not help but marvel. The moment I took a spoonful, a gentle smoky wok flavor spread through my mouth, followed by a spicy, refreshing heat that went right to my bones! Fresh seafood broth and silky sundubu came together beautifully, making it deep and clean rather than overwhelming. It was truly perfect for a hangover.

### Chodang sundubu with a deep soybean flavor

I heard they make their tofu carefully in-house every morning, and one bite immediately brought out a wow.

> This nuttiness is seriously on another level!

This dish relies solely on milky soybean liquid and the natural flavor of soft, curd-like tofu, without bold seasoning. It was mild, yet the nutty aroma that filled my mouth was so deep that it hit my taste buds perfectly. If you love nutty, gently seasoned flavors, you cannot help but fall for this—the very essence of authentic Sokcho sundubu.

## Crisp-chewy buckwheat jeonbyeong and scorched-rice soup

The golden-brown buckwheat jeonbyeong came packed with spicy kimchi dumpling filling. The outside of its buckwheat wrapper was crisp, while the inside had a wonderfully chewy, rice-cake-like texture—an absolute textural masterpiece! The spicy, savory kimchi filling and nutty wrapper worked beautifully together, making it the perfect bite to pick up between spoonfuls of sundubu.

I scooped out the fluffy, freshly cooked pot rice, mixed it into the broth, and finished a hearty meal. Then I poured hot water into the pot and ended with savory nurungji sungnyung—scorched-rice tea. What followed was the kind of happy fullness where you want for nothing else.

## A satisfying breakfast meal in Sokcho

From the skill behind the soft handmade tofu with its deep flavor, to the spicy seafood jjamppong rich with smoky wok aroma, to the chewy-crisp buckwheat jeonbyeong, this was a satisfying meal with nothing missing. If you are looking for somewhere to fill up early in the morning, or a place to dine comfortably with your pup without feeling self-conscious, Yetgoeul Sundubu is well worth a stop!
