When you are looking for a meal in Seohyeon, there are so many restaurants that it can actually be hard to decide where to go. That day, I wanted a proper meal of rice with warm broth rather than something strongly seasoned, so after looking around, I visited Okdengjang Seohyeon Branch (옥된장 서현점).

I already like doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) and doenjang jeongol (soybean paste hot pot), so I went in without much hesitation. Once I started eating, though, there was more variety on the menu than I expected, which made it nice for ordering several things to share. We ordered squid and minari jeon (savory pancake), beef pork-belly doenjang hot pot, and squid doenjang hot pot. Trying all three together, each had a different character, so they worked well for sharing when visiting with a group.

## A comfortable atmosphere for a meal in Seohyeon

Okdengjang Seohyeon Branch is easy to get to when you have a meal appointment in Seohyeon, so it was also a decent place to stop by for food after running errands nearby. Inside, the overall atmosphere was clean and comfortable.

These days, lots of restaurants have pretty interiors, but once you sit down to eat, the table spacing or overall atmosphere can be uncomfortable. Here, it was relatively easy to settle in and enjoy a meal. Since dishes such as doenjang hot pot are meant to be placed in the middle and shared over warm broth, it seemed like a good fit for a meal with friends or family. The relaxed setting made me think it would be worth considering for anyone looking for Korean food in Seohyeon.

## Squid and minari jeon came out first

Ordering only hot pot felt a little incomplete, so we added the squid and minari jeon. As soon as it arrived, its nutty aroma rose first, and since it seemed best eaten hot, I picked up a piece right away. The outside was golden and crisp, while the inside had minari and squid together. The distinctive fragrant note of minari made it feel a little different from a typical seafood pancake.

The squid also had a springy bite, so the pancake's texture was not one-note. Personally, I really liked picking up a piece of jeon here and there while having spoonfuls of hot-pot broth. The warm pancake and earthy hot pot went together beautifully. If you like minari, it is a menu item worth ordering at least once.

## How was the beef pork-belly doenjang hot pot?

One of the dishes I was most looking forward to that day was the beef pork-belly doenjang hot pot. It arrived with a generous amount of ingredients in the hot-pot pan and was cooked at the table, so it was appetizing from the moment I saw it. As it began to bubble away, the deep, earthy aroma unique to doenjang rose up. Doenjang hot pot really does have its own appeal when you cook it right at the table like this.

With both beef and pork belly in it, I could taste the flavor from the meat, and it went well with rice alongside the doenjang broth. The broth was rich and earthy without feeling overly heavy. Because it contained both meat and vegetables, every spoonful brought several flavors, and I kept going back for more. After picking out some of the meat and having a little rice with the broth, I thought again that this kind of dish really needs rice to feel complete.

## The squid doenjang hot pot was a treat too

Along with the beef pork-belly doenjang hot pot, we also ordered the squid doenjang hot pot. They were both doenjang hot pots, but the addition of squid clearly took the flavor in a different direction. As the squid cooked, its characteristic savory depth joined the broth, bringing a refreshing seafood quality, and the squid itself was pleasantly chewy rather than tough.

While the beef pork-belly hot pot centered on the nutty, substantial flavor of the meat, the squid doenjang hot pot felt cleaner and more refreshing. Rather than choosing just one, I think it would be nice for a group to order both and compare them. Switching between the two hot pots, we could clearly feel the appeal of each one.

## Korean dishes that go well with rice

Sometimes even a regular meal can feel burdensome if it is too greasy or strongly seasoned. Maybe because we ordered doenjang hot pot that day, I felt relatively comfortable even after finishing the meal. Above all, hot pot lets you eat the broth and ingredients together and pairs well with rice, making it a satisfying meal.

Adding the squid and minari jeon kept the meal from feeling repetitive. It seemed like a good menu combination for meeting a friend in Seohyeon and casually having a drink, but also for coming mainly for a meal. Since hot pot is especially good for sharing, it would suit a family dinner or a meal with friends too.

## My honest take after trying all three dishes

After trying three dishes at Okdengjang Seohyeon Branch, what I liked most was being able to enjoy the familiar ingredient of doenjang in different ways. The squid and minari jeon combined the fragrant freshness of minari with squid's chewy texture, while the beef pork-belly doenjang hot pot felt especially filling thanks to the flavor of the meat.

The squid doenjang hot pot had added seafood savoriness, making it more refreshing to enjoy. Even though we ordered all three dishes at once, their flavors did not overlap too much, so it was fun to share a little of everything. Most of all, they were dishes that went well with rice, making this a good place for when you want a meal that truly feels like a meal.

If you usually look only for meat or noodle dishes in Seohyeon and want something different one day, Okdengjang Seohyeon Branch could be a good choice when you want warm hot pot and jeon together. We left full after starting with the squid and minari jeon and moving on to the two doenjang hot pots. Rather than bold, intense flavors, it was the sort of meal I think I will remember on a day when I crave hearty, earthy Korean food. If you are looking for Korean food in Seohyeon and considering dishes a group can comfortably share, it may be worth a visit. I think it would suit anyone who especially loves doenjang hot pot.
