## In short

Pyeonbaekrim is a Japanese restaurant in Goyang, Gyeonggi, serving hinoki-steamed dishes and rice meals. We steamed beef and bean sprouts for 7 minutes, then paired them with house-marinated soy sauce shrimp rice and rich jjamppong rice. Verdict: a satisfying 15,000 won meal of light steamed food and filling rice dishes.

The weather was lovely that day and it was close by, so we walked from Daehwa Station instead of driving, haha. It is right in front of the station, so it is easy to find!

Pyeonbaekrim, a great KINTEX-area restaurant, is on the second floor of KINTEX Plaza.

When we got to the second floor, there was this spacious restaurant!!!

They accept Goyang Pay, and it looked like takeout orders through Baemin and Yogiyo are available too, haha.

## A spacious interior with solo and group seating

When I went inside, the restaurant was tidy overall,

and spacious enough to eat comfortably. There were lots of seating options, from solo seats to group tables, so it looked suitable for anything from eating alone to a meal with several people.

For solo diners, only the rice meals are available! And the meals are just 10,000 won...!!!! It is seriously hard to get a meal for 10,000 won these days ㅠㅠ, so the prices here felt really kind, haha. There are many hospitals near Daehwa Station, so it seemed popular with hospital visitors and staff, as well as office workers around Daehwa Station and KINTEX at lunchtime!

There was a self-service bar off to one side too. They had high chairs and aprons ready, and ordering through the kiosk at your table made getting a meal easy ^^

## Menu choices to have with hinoki steam

Pyeonbaekrim centers on pyeonbaek-jjim, food steamed in a hinoki cypress steamer with meat and vegetables. Best of all, there was even a “lots of meat!!!” option on the menu, which I was so happy to see hahaha.

According to the owner’s introduction!!! It is a Korean interpretation of seiro-mushi, a traditional food from Hokkaido, Japan, designed so you can enjoy meat, vegetables, and seafood all at once. Haha.

Along with hinoki steam, they offer à la carte items such as soy sauce shrimp, jjamppong rice, and yaki udon, plus drinks including craft beer. The bite-size fried dumplings looked seriously delicious... We decided we absolutely have to order those next time hahaha.

*An honest review of Pyeonbaekrim in Ilsan*

The basic side dishes arrived first,

![Pyeonbaekrim basic side-dish selection](https://img.superchart.com/images/daehwa-hinoki-shrimp-rice/daehwa-hinoki-shrimp-rice-15-u27s9-966.webp)

and the self-service bar had various items including ssammu (pickled radish wraps), Cheongyang chili peppers, mild green peppers, and chilled cucumber soup.

*Basic side dishes at Pyeonbaekrim in Ilsan*

We already had plenty of basic side dishes and thought we might leave some behind,

*Pyeonbaekrim self-service bar*

so I only brought back a little baek-kimchi (white kimchi), which I have been loving lately, and some peppers from the self-service bar, haha.

This time, we ordered the beef hinoki steam + soy sauce shrimp rice for ₩15,000 and the beef hinoki steam + jjamppong rice for ₩15,000.

## Beef hinoki steam, ready after 7 minutes

### A light pairing of beef and bean sprouts

*Beef hinoki steam at Pyeonbaekrim in Ilsan*

The hinoki steam was a light style of dish, steaming beef and bean sprouts together.

The owner set a timer for 7 minutes, explained everything, and then we just had to wait a moment, haha. Perfect time to visit the self-service bar hahaha.

You can control the temperature right at the table, but the owner set everything up so conveniently that we did not need to worry about it, haha.

I lifted the lid just a little before it was ready... The beef quality was incredible, right? ㅠㅠㅠ The meat was really fresh and the portion was generous too!!!!

After 7 minutes, it was time for the grand opening~~~ Ta-da!

The beef had a nutty, savory meat aroma, while the bean sprouts kept their crisp texture, so they made a great combination together.

Hinoki steam is a light, healthy food that removes excess fat while bringing out the ingredients’ natural flavors, right!!?! And because you eat it with bean sprouts too, it is diet food... it will not make you gain weight... hahahahaha. I always think of hinoki steam as health food for when I am dieting, hehe.

*Pyeonbaekrim beef hinoki steam in Ilsan*

The owner told us it tastes best when you dip it deeply in the sauce, and even though I do not usually use much sauce, I really did keep dipping this one generously hahaha.

By the time we had finished, we had dipped so much that the sauce was nearly gone hahaha. My favorite way was to dip it deeply in sauce and add wasabi!!!!

Even when I used plenty, it was not overpowering and leaned more clean-tasting!

## Soy sauce shrimp rice mixed with plump shrimp

At first, there were about three large shrimp, so I wondered, “Will there be a little too little shrimp?”... But once I tried it, I was much more satisfied with the big, meaty, plump shrimp than I would have been with several small ones ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

We were told to cut up the shrimp into bite-size pieces, add them to the roe rice, then mix in about one or two spoonfuls of soy sauce! Also, why did the roe rice look so gorgeous..?

![Soy sauce shrimp rice at Pyeonbaekrim](https://img.superchart.com/images/daehwa-hinoki-shrimp-rice/daehwa-hinoki-shrimp-rice-21-wvdcu-966.webp)
*Soy sauce shrimp rice at Pyeonbaekrim near KINTEX*

With egg yolk, flying-fish roe, seaweed flakes, and chopped scallions, this was far tastier than simply mixing soy sauce shrimp with plain rice! The shrimp meat was truly plump, giving it a nice texture, and it was more filling than I expected. As I ate, there was even shrimp left over..!!!!

*Soy sauce shrimp rice at Pyeonbaekrim near KINTEX*

They said the soy sauce shrimp is marinated in-house, and I liked that the soy sauce was not excessively salty but let the shrimp and rice flavors come through :) You know those soy sauce shrimp that are just intensely salty?! I really do not like those..

Pyeonbaekrim’s soy sauce shrimp rice was not salty at all, so while my boyfriend was cutting the shrimp, I kept picking at them and eating them hahaha.

*Review of soy sauce shrimp rice at Pyeonbaekrim near KINTEX*

It was so delicious once I mixed the soy sauce shrimp rice well and added a little wasabi, haha.

## Jjamppong rice with meaty broth and smoky flavor

![Jjamppong rice at Pyeonbaekrim](https://img.superchart.com/images/daehwa-hinoki-shrimp-rice/daehwa-hinoki-shrimp-rice-24-1kq9j-966.webp)
*Jjamppong rice at Pyeonbaekrim near Daehwa Station*

The jjamppong rice comes with the jjamppong and a bowl of rice separately.

I tried the jjamppong broth before adding the rice and... wow... the meaty broth flavor came through so strongly!!! It tasted like the kind of soup that makes you sound like you are recovering from a night of drinking, even when you have not had a drink hahaha.

It also had a smoky wok-fired flavor, so the broth was quite rich. With the hinoki steam, the light steamed dish and spicy broth paired well, each bringing a different appeal.

At Pyeonbaekrim, you can enjoy meat and vegetables lightly with hinoki steam, then choose a rice meal to suit your taste, such as soy sauce shrimp rice or jjamppong rice. And it is ₩15,000... I think the value is the best!!!! With its clean, spacious setting, self-service bar, and varied seating, it also felt like a convenient spot for lunch.
