## In short

Hana Shabu Shabu Junggye Main Branch is a shabu-shabu and seiro-mushi (Japanese-style hinoki steaming) restaurant between Junggye and Hagye stations in Nowon, Seoul. Looking for a vegetable-heavy meal while dieting, the writer ordered the 33,000 won seiro-mushi set, a course of beef and vegetables steamed for 20 minutes in a hinoki box, torch-seared beef tataki, mentaiju rice bowl and ube pudding. Light but never bland, it's a solid pick for a family meal or date.

I've been dieting lately, so eating out isn't easy these days. After some thought, I went out for a steamed dish loaded with vegetables.

This is Hana Shabu Shabu, a Junggye favorite that's even been featured on a live TV show. The hinoki-steamed seiro-mushi was clean and delicious, and I finished off a full course all the way to the mentaiju rice bowl and ube dessert. ✌🏻 Let's get into my honest review of Hana Shabu Shabu!

## Location and parking at Hana Shabu Shabu Junggye Main Branch

![Exterior entrance of Hana Shabu Shabu Junggye Main Branch](https://img.superchart.com/images/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course-03-1srx3-900.webp)

Hana Shabu Shabu Junggye Main Branch / Address: 서울 노원구 동일로203가길 29 브라운스톤중계 101호 / Hours: Daily 11:00–22:00

📍 Hana Shabu Shabu is about a 5-minute walk from Exit 4 of Junggye Station (Line 7), and also about 5 minutes from Exit 6 of Hagye Station!

🅿️ If you're driving, you can use the building's basement parking lot, with 2 hours free when you dine in.

🧑🧑🧒🧒 Reservations are available and there's group seating too, so it looks like a good spot for family gatherings or company dinners with several people. A Junggye favorite with easy transit access and parking too✌🏻

## Visiting at 5pm — interior mood and wait time

![Indoor seating at Hana Shabu Shabu at 5pm](https://img.superchart.com/images/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course-04-1w869-900.webp)

We visited around 5pm. It's a bit early for dinner hour, so we got in without any wait. From other reviews, it sounds like there can be a wait after 7pm on weekdays. Reservations are possible too, so keep that in mind!

When I went, there were couples as well as families — more families dining together than I expected!

![Clean interior with spacious tables](https://img.superchart.com/images/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course-05-1u3rj-900.webp)

The place overall felt clean and warm, and the tables were spacious enough to eat comfortably. Since I like tidy spots, I'd also recommend this as a Hagye Station restaurant for anyone looking for a date-night dinner!

## Menu and prices — the difference between shabu-shabu and seiro-mushi

![Hana Shabu Shabu menu board](https://img.superchart.com/images/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course-06-1f7cy-900.webp)

Hana Shabu Shabu's signature dishes are shabu-shabu and seiro-mushi. Shabu-shabu is meat and vegetables cooked in a warm broth, while seiro-mushi is meat and vegetables steamed in a hinoki wood box. They also have rice dishes like gyudon (beef rice bowl) and mentaiju (pollock roe rice bowl).

Prices vary by course — lunch menus run 23,000–35,000 won and dinner menus run 29,000–41,000 won, with lunch 6,000 won cheaper across the board.

When we visited, there was an event giving away free tataki with a photo review. Looking over the menu, I wanted to eat lots of vegetables that day, so I ordered the 33,000 won seiro-mushi set with brisket and sirloin.✌🏻 With so many menu options, it also seemed like a good Junggye restaurant to visit with people who have different tastes!

A pre-meal salad takes care of your health. It's drizzled with a tasty sesame dressing!

## The seiro-mushi set — waiting 20 minutes for the hinoki steam

![Full seiro-mushi set in a hinoki steamer](https://img.superchart.com/images/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course-12-1c8ah-900.webp)

The hinoki steamer came out packed with meat and vegetables.

![Steamer so full the lid won't close](https://img.superchart.com/images/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course-15-hn7xm-900.webp)

I loved that there were so many vegetables the steamer wouldn't even close. I've been eating like a champ lately... a place that gives you a lot is the best👍🏻 They set an hourglass timer and let it steam for about 20 minutes.

![Seiro-mushi fully steamed after 20 minutes](https://img.superchart.com/images/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course-16-1qepg-507.webp)

It tasted cleaner and better than I expected. Maybe because it's steamed in hinoki wood, the ingredients' flavors came through crisp and clear, and paired with the special sauces that came with it, it wasn't bland at all.

![Four sauces including chili and yuja ponzu](https://img.superchart.com/images/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course-18-shxq6-541.webp)

The sauces were chili, yuja ponzu (citron ponzu), sesame, and chili paste! I liked the yuja ponzu best haha

### Torch-seared beef tataki

Near the end of the meal, a staff member torches the meat for you... this really had that smoky char flavor and was delicious. Personally, this smoky beef tataki was one of the most memorable parts.👍🏻

Diet food can sometimes taste a bit lacking, but this one had none of that — I could enjoy it without any compromise. If you're looking for something that isn't too heavy, Hana Shabu Shabu could be a good pick as a Hagye Station restaurant.

## Last up: gyudon and mentaiju, plus ube pudding

![Gyudon and mentaiju rice bowls to close out the course](https://img.superchart.com/images/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course-20-w5lrq-900.webp)

Once you finish the steamed dish, you can choose between gyudon or mentaiju as your rice dish. We were curious about both, so we ordered one of each and shared. Gyudon is a rice bowl topped with beef, and mentaiju is topped with pollock roe. Both were good, but we liked the mentaiju more.

![Ube pudding served as dessert](https://img.superchart.com/images/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course-22-4lwhz-720.webp)

Ube is trending these days, right! To finish, we got ube pudding for dessert and wrapped up happily. With even the dessert this good, the course felt complete — worth a visit as a Hagye Station restaurant!

![Table view after finishing the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course/hana-shabu-seiro-mushi-diet-course-23-19qmv-900.webp)

It was so good that I failed at portion control again, as usual! Diet starts tomorrow✌🏻

## Final thoughts — eating out while dieting

Looking for a vegetable-heavy meal while dieting, I tried the seiro-mushi at Hana Shabu Shabu, a Hagye Station favorite. It was light but still flavorful, and the smoky beef and mentaiju at the end were satisfying too.

If you're looking for a relaxed place for a family meal or a couple's date, this seems like a solid Junggye restaurant! Next time I'll try the shabu-shabu I didn't get to have this time. :)
