## A filling solo lunch I found in Yeonsan-dong

I had an errand nearby and ended up in Yeonsan-dong around lunchtime. Looking for somewhere I could have a filling meal alone, I stopped by Sinseon Myeonga, which I had been keeping an eye on—and it felt like I had properly discovered a great restaurant that day, so I left after a very happy meal.

I visited during weekday lunch, and there were far more customers than I expected. Nearly every table was full, so I quickly snapped a few photos of the interior in the gaps between diners leaving.

Customers kept coming in, and I got the sense that it was already quite well known among nearby office workers as a good lunch spot. There really were lots of people there to eat, and it had the atmosphere of a seriously popular place.

The restaurant has an open kitchen, so you can see some of the cooking in action. The tables and kitchen area were kept tidy too, which made the whole place feel trustworthy from the moment I walked in.

I came alone, but there were more solo diners than I expected, so I could settle in and eat comfortably without feeling self-conscious. Being able to order at the table was also quietly convenient when dining alone.

Even though it was a busy lunch hour, the owner was kind and welcoming, which made for an enjoyable meal. There is also a well-equipped parking lot behind the restaurant, so it is convenient to visit by car.

## Ordering the kalguksu-bossam set

The menu had a wide range of choices, from house-made kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) to bibimbap, sujebi (hand-torn dough soup), kongguksu (cold soybean noodle soup), pork cutlet, and suyuk (boiled sliced pork). I paused to decide, then ordered the set with house-made kalguksu and a tasting portion of bossam (boiled pork wraps).

It was ₩11,900, and getting a tasting portion of bossam with the kalguksu seemed like a pretty good deal considering restaurant prices these days. I also liked that it felt like I was giving myself a proper meal, even on my own.

## Springy fresh noodles and rich broth

They say the kalguksu uses fresh noodles kneaded and cut in-house. When I tried them, they were springier than typical kalguksu noodles while still soft, and it was so nice to slurp them up with the broth.

![Sundae served as a starter before the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/yeonsan-dong-kalguksu-solo-lunch/yeonsan-dong-kalguksu-solo-lunch-11-1vs7r-900.webp)

The sundae (Korean blood sausage) that came as a basic starter before the meal was better than I expected, too. Picking up one piece at a time really got my appetite going before the kalguksu arrived.

Soon, the kalguksu-bossam set arrived. First, the gentle savory aroma of the broth really stirred my appetite. It is made with dried big-eye herring and soup anchovies, and one sip had a deep, savory umami flavor—clean rather than aggressively salty—so I kept reaching for the broth.

The tasting portion of bossam was more substantial than its name suggested. The meat was warm, soft, and moist, and alternating it with the kalguksu made for a really good combination.

Above all, the kalguksu portion was truly generous. Even eating alone, I found myself thinking, “That’s quite a lot!” I had plenty of noodles and still got to enjoy the broth, making it a hearty meal that felt like good value.

### Kimchi that paired beautifully with kalguksu

Personally, the kimchi I had with the kalguksu that day was especially memorable because it was so good. It had a crisp texture and a flavor that went so well with the noodles that I kept adding a piece of kimchi after every bite.

Perhaps because it was made with dried big-eye herring and soup anchovies, the broth was rich, nutty, and full of umami. After one bite, I just kept reaching for my spoon. It suited my taste so well that I continued spooning up broth as I ate the noodles.

Even people who do not usually love noodles could probably enjoy this without any fuss. The noodles themselves had that springy yet soft texture, becoming more delicious the more I chewed, and with the rich, nutty broth, I kept reaching for them and finished the bowl in no time.

## Moist bossam and the self-service bar

The bossam came with shredded dried radish, wrap vegetables, and sauces, so I could enjoy it in different ways to suit my taste. Although I was dining alone, having both kalguksu and bossam made the meal feel quite abundant.

The bossam was cleanly boiled without any unwanted odor, and the meat was soft and moist rather than tough. It was even tastier with the kalguksu, and the generous portion left me feeling that I had truly eaten a satisfying meal.

You can help yourself to kimchi at the self-service bar and refill it easily when you run out. I liked that kimchi lovers can eat plenty without hesitation.

On the way out after the meal, you can also pick up canned sikhye (sweet rice drink) and yakgwa (honey cookie) at the self-service dessert corner. With generous, tasty kalguksu and bossam, delicious kimchi, and an easy-to-use self-service bar, it struck me as a Yeonsan-dong restaurant that gives you so many thoughtful extras for the price.

I had come that day with absolutely no plan, simply because of an errand nearby, and happened to walk in. I could see why it was so busy. The flavor and portions were impressive, as was the thoughtful attention to the self-service bar and dessert, so next time I would like to come back to Sinseon Myeonga with Haeun and try the bibimbap or another dish.
