I was craving a spicy braised fish dish over the weekend, so I went to Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho Main Branch.

This time I tried the braised pollock (명태조림). Once the table was set, the portion looked so generous that I felt like I'd be eating well from the start.

If you're looking for good restaurants in Doan-dong, Daejeon and love braised fish, this place is worth keeping in mind.

## The exterior and store guide at Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho

The exterior has a white sign with the name 'Myeongtaerang' written large, so it catches your eye right away.

At the entrance and on the window, the signature menu, lunch specials, and closing days are posted, so you can check the menu lineup before even walking in.

In particular, the store notice explained that owner Ryu Myeongho makes the special sauce and cooks the food himself.

![Store notice describing the special sauce and pollock dish research](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-dogan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-dogan-braised-pollock-04-13pqo-966.webp)

It also mentioned that he studied pollock dishes for a long time to develop the current sauce, which gave me the impression that this place is really focused on pollock cooking.

The closing day notice also stood out — it said that from the fourth week of April, Thursdays would be closed while Saturdays would remain open as usual. Definitely worth noting if you're planning a Thursday visit.

## 5 spice levels for the braised pollock, medium spicy recommended

At Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho Main Branch, the braised pollock (명태조림) comes with a step-by-step spice level guide.

![Guide showing the 5 spice levels for braised pollock](https://img.superchart.com/images/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-dogan-braised-pollock/myeongtaerang-ryumyeongho-dogan-braised-pollock-05-1ulbq-966.webp)

From mild to less spicy, medium spicy, spicy, and very spicy — five levels total — so it works well whether you're bad with spice or you love it hot.

Medium spicy was marked as the store's recommended level.

The braised pollock we ordered was satisfying right off the bat since the portion was quite generous.

The taste was good too, and eating it with rice made for a filling, satisfying meal with nothing lacking.

If you're looking for braised pollock in Daejeon and care about portion size as much as taste, this could be a solid choice.

## Basic side dishes and the self-serve corner

The basic side dishes at Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho Main Branch went well with the braised pollock, and extra sides were self-serve. Some places nail the main dish but skimp on sides — this time the basic sides were tasty too.

Adding a side dish here and there while eating the braised pollock made the whole meal feel more complete.

Extra sides were self-serve, meaning you take as much as you need.

With the sides backing it up nicely, my overall satisfaction while eating the braised pollock was high.

## The seed hotteok nurungji I remembered most

Surprisingly, one menu item from this meal stuck with me the most: the seed hotteok nurungji (씨앗호떡누룽지).

When you first see the name, you probably think, 'Would braised pollock and seed hotteok really go together?'

I thought it was a slightly odd combination too, but once I actually tried them together, they matched surprisingly well.

It was refreshing to enjoy the braised pollock in a completely different way than the usual bowl of rice.

Pairing the seed hotteok nurungji with the braised pollock changed the whole flavor mood, and I kept reaching for more.

According to the store's signage, the seed hotteok nurungji is a signature menu item launched on July 4, 2024. The store also claims it was the first of its kind released in Korea.

If someone asked me which dish I remembered most from a restaurant in Doan-dong, Daejeon, I'd think of the seed hotteok nurungji here first.

Rather than just ordering the braised pollock alone, I'd recommend ordering the seed hotteok nurungji alongside it if you can. In our taste, the two paired quite well.

## Weekday lunch special prices and order conditions

Myeongtaerang Ryu Myeongho Main Branch also runs a weekday lunch special.

Spicy braised pollock is ₩12,000 per person, basin pollock stew is ₩11,000 per person, and grilled mackerel is ₩13,000 per person, with orders available for 2 or more people.

The lunch special isn't offered on weekends or holidays, and the sign stated it's basically one order per person.

The sign also noted that a bowl of rice is included when ordering for 2 or more people, so keep that in mind when ordering based on party size.

On the main menu board, spicy braised pollock was ₩30,000, pork belly braised pollock was ₩38,000, and basin pollock stew was ₩23,000.

There's also seed hotteok nurungji at ₩5,000, pork cutlet at ₩10,000, and add-ons like udon or ramen noodles, tofu, pollock roe, and pollock milt.

Menus and prices reflect what I saw at the time of my visit and may change afterward.

## Overall thoughts

What impressed me most about this meal was the generous braised pollock paired with the seed hotteok nurungji.

The braised pollock tasted great and came in a generous portion, making it a satisfying meal, and the basic sides paired well too, so the whole spread was likeable.

The seed hotteok nurungji in particular felt like an odd combination at first, but once I actually tried it, it went surprisingly well with the braised pollock.

It offered a different kind of fun compared to a plain bowl of rice, making it the dish that stuck in my memory about this place.
