We arrived right at dinner time and the place was already packed. Definitely a weekend-evening thing — nearly every table had people grilling pork belly. The smell of meat sizzling across the room made me think we absolutely need to come back for the pork belly next time.

Resisting the pull of the pork belly, we ordered our own main: pork galbi kimchi stew (돼지갈비김치찌개) for two. It came out in a huge pot piled generously with aged kimchi and whole cuts of meat, which you snip apart at the table with scissors — a fun, satisfying way to eat, and the visual impact even before it started boiling was already impressive.

One of the best things about this place is the self-serve bar. There's plenty of tofu set out for the stew, so you can help yourself to as much as you like and simmer it right in. Soft tofu with that spicy, rich broth is basically a rice-stealer — dangerous for how much rice it makes you eat.

A real Korean restaurant needs good rice, and this place delivers with freshly cooked pot rice — you really feel the charm of Korean cooking here. The moment you lift the hot lid, a nutty rice smell fills the air. Glossy, chewy rice topped with spicy kimchi and meat was the kind of hearty bite that melts away a whole day's fatigue. Pouring warm water in at the end to make nutty rice-crust tea (누룽지) was the perfect, soothing finish.

Since the kids can't handle the spicy kimchi stew, we ordered the egg roll as a side dish. We just wanted something light to go with rice, but when it arrived we were shocked at the size. Thick, fluffy egg roll dipped in the ketchup that came alongside — both kids said it was delicious and each polished off a full bowl of rice. Having a dish like this makes it a great spot for a family meal even with kids along. Our daughter was thrilled at an egg roll practically the size of her own face.
