## In short

Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk is a gamjatang (pork bone and potato stew) and pork bone soup restaurant on Seonyu-dong 1-ro in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, between Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station and Yangpyeong Station. The small spicy gamjatang costs 27,000 won and comes with free refills of broth, napa cabbage and rice, alongside house-made fresh kimchi and kkakdugi and a deep broth scented with perilla leaves. The only letdown at Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk was that the pork portion was so generous there was no room left for the fried rice finish.

These days the evenings have turned pretty chilly, so I kept craving hot soup. So I went to a bone soup spot near Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station. Let me introduce Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk (당산뼈다귀해장국), a great place to go for a filling meal near Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station!

## How to walk there from Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station

Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk sits between Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station and Yangpyeong Station, so it's really accessible. It's 7 minutes from Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station and 9 minutes from Yangpyeong Station.

## Inside the restaurant

The restaurant felt like a genuine neighborhood spot where locals come to eat — plenty of tables and a comfortable atmosphere for a meal.

## The menu and what comes with free refills

Bone haejangguk and gamjatang are the main dishes here, each available mild or spicy. There are also plenty of sides to choose from depending on your taste, like squid stir-fry, squid-chive pancake, and egg roll.

When you order gamjatang or haejangguk, you can refill the broth, napa cabbage, and even the rice, so it's really possible to eat until you're stuffed. In these high-inflation times, it was even more satisfying to get a filling meal without worrying about the bill ╰(*´︶`*)╯

## What does the small spicy gamjatang taste like?

Gamjatang small (spicy) — ₩27,000. You can choose mild or spicy for the gamjatang. That day I was craving something spicy, so I ordered the spicy version.

Gamjatang is best enjoyed simmering right on the table. Once it starts boiling hard, the aroma of the broth really rises up and gets your appetite going. Honestly, I thought gamjatang wasn't anything special as a dish, but eating it here, there's clearly something different. Let me properly show you Dangsan Ppyeodaegwi Haejangguk's special secret.

### A pork bone soup simmered over 12 hours

Apparently the bone haejangguk here takes over 12 hours of care to complete. The bones are cleaned after 8 hours of soaking out the blood, boiled thoroughly for 2 hours, then rested and cooked further for over 2 more hours. Thanks to that long, careful process, the meat on the bones is tender and the broth has real depth.

### House-made geotjeori (fresh kimchi) and kkakdugi (radish kimchi)

The geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi) and kkakdugi (radish kimchi), so important to gamjatang, are also made in-house. The geotjeori had a strong fermented-seafood flavor, exactly my style — I finished a whole bowl of rice and kimchi even before the gamjatang arrived. It tasted even better eaten with the hot bone broth and meat.

I especially liked how the perilla leaves on top of the gamjatang added a subtle aroma, giving the broth that distinctive savory, deep flavor.

### Generous pork, but no room for the fried rice

I think the amount of meat is another key thing for gamjatang, and there was so much meat on the bones — it's fun to pick it off, and since it was well cooked, the meat came off tender and easily. The portion was really generous and the broth so rich that I got too full to try the fried rice, which was such a shame. I kept thinking about it even after I left ........... (´;︵;`)

Just imagine a spoonful of rice topped with meat and napa cabbage — so good!!! So I'd recommend this place not just to gamjatang lovers, but to office workers looking for a filling lunch spot.
