## In short

Makise Hapjeong is a Japanese restaurant in Mapo, Seoul specializing in kaisendon (seafood rice bowls) and donburi, a five-minute walk from Exit 8 of Hapjeong Station. On a weekend date for two, the order came to kaisendon 20,000 won, ebi katsudon (fried shrimp rice bowl) 12,000 won, a side of karaage (Japanese fried chicken) 7,000 won and a zero-sugar cola 3,000 won, and each dish arrived with its own sauce. None of the three dishes at Makise Hapjeong tasted over-seasoned, so this self-paid visit ended with a plan to come back.

Today's spot is Makise, a Hapjeong date favorite! The weather was cool enough that I thought it'd be nice to head over to the Hapjeong/Sangsu area, so we came here for a weekend date. Makise is about a 5-minute walk from Exit 8 of Hapjeong Station. The Hapjeong/Hongdae area has a lot of cute little Japanese restaurants, and this place seems to be famous as one of Seoul's go-to kaisendon spots. Places serving kaisendon aren't that common, so I'd been wanting to come here even more.

## What kind of restaurant is Makise Hapjeong? Kaisendon you scoop by the spoonful

Makise Hapjeong is a Hapjeong sushi spot where you pile rice, sashimi, and wasabi onto a spoon and eat it that way. The sashimi lineup is written right outside the shop, so you can check it before you even walk in.

## Seating and reservations at Makise Hapjeong: tables for two, tables for four, counter seats

Inside, Makise Hapjeong has tables for two, tables for four, and counter seats, so it works whether you're eating solo or on a Hapjeong date. The number of seats felt just right — not too many, not too few — and there was enough space between tables that it never felt cramped. We came as a pair and sat at a two-top. You can book through Naver Reservation, so it's worth reserving ahead.

## What we ordered for two and what it cost

Here's the menu at Makise Hapjeong!

- Kaisendon ₩20,000
- Ebi katsudon ₩12,000
- Karaage side ₩7,000
- Zero-sugar cola ₩3,000

When you order the kaisendon, they ask if there's any sashimi you'd rather skip — a nice, thoughtful touch.

Even the water was a nutty roasted-barley tea, haha, nice. For drinks I went with the zero-sugar cola — since both the ebi katsudon and the karaage are fried, I wanted something clean and fizzy to go with them.

There was pickled radish and seasoned seaweed stem banchan, plus soy sauce, at every table, and each person gets one bowl of soup.

## Ebi katsudon, 12,000 won: three fried shrimp and an egg

The ebi katsudon at Makise Hapjeong is ₩12,000 and comes topped with three thick fried shrimp. The food came out quickly, too — this is the ebi katsudon I ordered. There's no shrimp head but the tail is left on, and it was crispy and nutty enough that I ate the tail too. On top of the fried shrimp there's a whole egg, and eating it together with the onion and rice is delicious. The rice had just the right amount of sauce, not too sweet, so it was easy to eat without feeling heavy — very satisfying. I usually worry that gyudon or katsudon-type dishes will be oversalted before I even order, but this one was fine.

## Kaisendon, 20,000 won: the signature bowl at Makise Hapjeong

This kaisendon looks amazing from the first glance. I'd guess this is Makise Hapjeong's most signature dish. There are instructions for how to eat it written right on the table, so you can read through and eat it to your own taste.

![Kaisendon topped with a variety of sashimi](https://img.superchart.com/images/hapjeong-makise-ebikatsudon-karaage-set/hapjeong-makise-ebikatsudon-karaage-set-17-h4wrx-900.webp)

There's plenty of sashimi piled on, so even though it doesn't look like a huge amount, you end up feeling full once you finish it. They also bring you seaweed to wrap it in. And honestly, isn't the color just gorgeous, haha. Each piece of sashimi was thick and had a good chew to it. Makise, near Hapjeong Station, really is a Seoul kaisendon spot where you can enjoy a variety of sashimi all in one bowl.

## Karaage side, 7,000 won, with its own dipping sauce

This is the karaage (Japanese fried chicken) I ordered as a side dish, ₩7,000. The karaage came with its own separate sauce, too — soft-tasting and not greasy. I especially like places that prepare a different sauce for each dish you order. The frying felt crisp and clean, and the karaage's batter wasn't too thick either, which was great. All three dishes felt genuinely good to me personally, so this is a Hapjeong date spot I'd order from again.

A familiar taste, but a delicious one! I asked for extra wasabi and used it with both the ebi katsudon and the karaage — it made everything taste even cleaner and more delicious.

## A complimentary grilled yellowtail, and a first taste of mackerel sashimi

A single piece of grilled yellowtail came out as a service item, and it was nutty and... delicious. It wasn't on the menu as far as I could tell — I feel like it'd do well if they ran it as an evening izakaya-style item.

![A complimentary piece of grilled yellowtail](https://img.superchart.com/images/hapjeong-makise-ebikatsudon-karaage-set/hapjeong-makise-ebikatsudon-karaage-set-23-14xxz-900.webp)

![A spoonful topped with flounder and mackerel sashimi](https://img.superchart.com/images/hapjeong-makise-ebikatsudon-karaage-set/hapjeong-makise-ebikatsudon-karaage-set-24-1kcbh-900.webp)

I tried a piece each of flounder, egg, and mackerel sashimi, and there was no fishy taste at all — chewy and nutty. Honestly, I'd always been too scared to try mackerel sashimi before, so this was my first time. My first impression was that it tasted richer than expected, but not fishy at all?! Even a first-timer could enjoy this without worry.

The staff were kind and the food was delicious. This is a Hapjeong-station favorite I paid for myself and would gladly visit again — hope you have a great time at Makise too.
