## In short

Gyodong Nakwon is a retro Japanese-style izakaya in the Gyodong alleys off Gukchaebosang-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu. Three friends catching up on a Friday night shared spicy motsunabe for 26,000 won, crab tomalley pasta for 16,000 won and yakigyoza (pan-fried dumplings) for 6,000 won, and the spicy broth was a perfect match for soju. Today I'm bringing you a story about a proper Friday night out with three friends who finally got together after a long time 🍻 Since it had been so long since we'd all met up, we decided to eat something good, have a few drinks, and catch up on everything we'd missed!

After thinking about where to go, we ended up at Gyodong Nakwon, a well-known bar in Gyodong, Daegu 👀 Gyodong has so many bars and places with great atmosphere that it was hard to choose, but Gyodong Nakwon looked like it had a good vibe and a wide variety of side dishes, so it seemed perfect for drinking with friends haha.

A Friday night spent with old friends, good food, and a few drinks 🍻 Here's my honest review!✨

## Gyodong Nakwon location, hours and parking

Gyodong Nakwon is on the 1st floor of 627 Gukchaebosang-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu, next to Melting Point. It's open Monday to Friday from 18:00 to 2:00 the next day, and Saturday to Sunday from 17:00 to 2:00.

## The Japanese-style storefront in the Gyodong alley

Walking through the Gyodong alley, Gyodong Nakwon's Japanese-inspired exterior really caught my eye! The whole place had this retro izakaya feel, so the atmosphere already felt great before we even stepped inside 👀✨

The orange chairs out front, the Japanese-lettered sign, and the posters scattered around all added up to make it feel like a little izakaya tucked into a Japanese alley 🇯🇵🍻 There were also big menu photos posted by the entrance, so we could check out the menu before going in!

Maybe because it was a Friday night, there were already quite a few customers inside when I visited, which made me think this was a great spot in Gyodong for drinks with a nice atmosphere haha.

## What is the seating like inside Gyodong Nakwon?

![Bar-style seats in front of the kitchen at Gyodong Nakwon](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-05-1hc2y-900.webp)

![Table seats near the entrance of Gyodong Nakwon](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-06-1l9o5-m-900.webp)

![Izakaya-style props on the interior walls of Gyodong Nakwon](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-07-q9gjs-900.webp)

Once inside, there were more seating options than I expected! There was a long bar-style seat near the kitchen that seemed great for drinking solo or with one friend, and table seats near the entrance that worked well for sitting with a group 😊

The walls were covered in posters and props that gave off a Japanese bar vibe, so the whole place was full of that retro izakaya feeling 🇯🇵 The lighting was soft and warm too, so even amid the lively Gyodong bar atmosphere, it felt like a good spot to sit and chat over drinks.

![Coat hangers set up in a corner of Gyodong Nakwon](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-08-1kvjl-900.webp)

![Aprons provided at Gyodong Nakwon](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-09-1xt7y-900.webp)

On one side, there were also coat hangers and aprons ready to use! Sometimes food smells get on your clothes or sauce splatters, so having aprons available made things much easier 😊 I liked that they thought of even these small details haha.

![The back room at Gyodong Nakwon with a large screen installed](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-10-6ih3s-m-900.webp)

### The back room with a screen for watching baseball

Deeper inside the store, there was a separate space set up like this! What really stood out was the big screen installed there 👀⚾️ Looks like they show baseball games, so if you love baseball, this would be a great spot to watch a game while having a drink haha.

Watching a game with friends while snacking on good side dishes and drinking sounds like the kind of night where you'd lose track of time 🍻 Especially during baseball season, I think this place would be even more fun to visit!

## Gyodong Nakwon menu and what three friends ordered

![Gyodong Nakwon's nabe and pasta menu board](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-11-1b0mr-900.webp)

![Gyodong Nakwon's sashimi and fried food menu board](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-12-qq02n-900.webp)

![Gyodong Nakwon's side dish menu and prices](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-13-sbhxl-900.webp)

Looking at the menu, there was a surprisingly wide range of dishes — nabe (hot pot), pasta, stir-fried dishes, sashimi, fried food, and sides! There were several kinds of nabe, like motsunabe, Osaka beef brisket jjamppong nabe, and seafood curry nabe, and pasta options like crab tomalley pasta and Napolitan pasta that you don't usually see at an izakaya, which caught my eye 👀

Since there were three of us, we wanted to try a few different dishes, so after some thought, we ordered this 🤭

- 🍲 Spicy motsunabe ₩26,000
- 🍝 Crab tomalley pasta ₩16,000
- 🥟 Yakigyoza ₩6,000

All three dishes had a different style, so they seemed good for sharing, and especially with the spicy motsunabe plus pasta and gyoza, the combo seemed perfect as drinking food 🍻

![Barley-tea-like complimentary water served at Gyodong Nakwon](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-14-1bl8l-900.webp)

![Complimentary shrimp chips served as a starter](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-15-o6l82-900.webp)

While we waited after ordering, the water came out first! But it wasn't plain water — it was more like barley tea or hovenia tea, and it actually tasted really good!! There were also complimentary shrimp chips, which were so much better than expected that the three of us basically finished them before the food even arrived lol 🤣

Chatting away and nibbling on shrimp chips with friends I hadn't seen in a while, our ordered dishes finally started coming out one by one 👀

![Gyodong Nakwon's crab tomalley pasta topped with whole shrimp](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-16-itilj-900.webp)

### Crab tomalley pasta, 16,000 won

The first thing to arrive was the crab tomalley pasta!! Just look at that thick, rich sauce 🤤 And more than anything, check out those plump shrimp!!! 🦐 The shrimp were so big on top that my mouth watered the moment I saw it lol. The savory flavor of the crab tomalley combined with the thick sauce made this dish a total hit visually and taste-wise 💛

### Spicy motsunabe, 26,000 won

Whoa, the broth looked spicy just from the visual 🔥 Because it was such a spicy broth, it was seriously perfect for soju 🍶 One spoonful of the broth had this deep, savory heat that made you keep thinking about pairing a sip of soju with a spoonful of soup lol.

The daechang (beef intestines) inside were also tender and delicious! Not chewy at all — soft, easy to bite, and it went really well with the spicy broth as a drinking food 🤤

Cheers~ 🥂 Since it had been so long since we all got together, we had so much to talk about, and the mood kept getting better as we chatted over drinks lol. Chatting with friends and picking at delicious food together is really the happiest kind of time 🤭💛

### Yakigyoza, 6,000 won

Personally, this was a hidden gem 🤭 The outside was fried golden brown and crispy, and biting into it, the inside was juicy, moist, and tender — the texture was really great! Dipped lightly in soy sauce, it had this savory, salty edge that made it perfect to pop one after another as a side to drinks 🥟🍻 At ₩6,000, it was also an easy, affordable dish to add on.

![Candy given by the owner before leaving](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night/gyodong-nagwon-daegu-izakaya-friday-night-23-3v3xg-900.webp)

Before we left, the owner gave us some candy 🍭💕 It might seem like a small thing, but this kind of little touch made me feel unexpectedly happy haha. We got to eat great food, have a good drink with friends I hadn't seen in a while, and finish it off with a sweet candy on the way out 🤭💗 That little bit of thoughtfulness made the whole visit end on a great note!

## Who should visit Gyodong Nakwon?

We visited to spend a Friday night with three friends who hadn't seen each other in a while, and Gyodong Nakwon turned out to be a great place for good food, drinks, and conversation ☺️ The spicy motsunabe had a rich, spicy broth that went really well with soju, and the crab tomalley pasta was delicious with its thick sauce and plump shrimp 🍝 The yakigyoza was also crispy outside and juicy inside, making it a great side dish!

More than anything, the retro, distinctly Japanese atmosphere made it a comfortable place to drink with friends 🇯🇵🍻 There's also a screen in the back room, so baseball fans could enjoy watching a game while drinking ⚾️ If you're looking for a bar with good atmosphere in Gyodong, Gyodong Nakwon is worth a visit!
