## In short

Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a Korean bansang (set-meal) restaurant on the second floor of a building on Dongseong-ro 3-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu. On a late weekend lunch, a family of three ordered the Dongi grilled pork bulgogi bansang, the spicy grilled jeyuk set meal and a small tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and fried their own eggs at the self-bar. The smoky pork bulgogi and the spicy grilled jeyuk made a good pair at Cafe Dongi, but the small tangsuyuk was the dish the family remembered most.

We were out in Dongseong-ro with our kid on the weekend and lunchtime had already slipped well past noon. After a lot of back-and-forth about what to eat, we headed to Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch (카페동이 동성로본점), a place we go to often because it's easy to eat comfortably as a family and the menu has plenty of variety.

## Why Cafe Dongi in Dongseong-ro is easy to visit with a child

Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a Korean bansang (table-set meal) restaurant on the second floor of a building on Dongseong-ro 3-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu. I've been to a few other Cafe Dongi locations, and the clean, tidy bansang style makes it especially comfortable for eating with a kid.

The Dongseong-ro branch is on the second floor of the building, and since there's an elevator, going up with our kid wasn't difficult at all.

Walking in, the place was pretty full, as you'd expect at lunchtime, and it felt lively. But rather than feeling crowded, the overall atmosphere was bright and tidy, so it was still quite pleasant to eat in.

Even though it's a Korean restaurant, the interior isn't heavy at all — it's decorated cleanly, almost like a café — so it looked like a good fit for a family visit or just eating with friends.

## What a family of three ordered at Cafe Dongi

We sat down and quickly ordered on the table tablet. What we picked that day was the grilled pork bulgogi bansang, the spicy grilled jeyuk hanjeongsik table, and — small tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork)! It made for a hearty spread for three people.

## The fried-egg self-bar our child loved most

As soon as we finished ordering, I headed straight for the self-bar. You just can't pass up this self-bar when you come to Cafe Dongi.

![Self-bar at Cafe Dongi with rice and seaweed](https://img.superchart.com/images/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk-09-wh9pp-966.webp)

![Self-bar corner where you can fry your own eggs](https://img.superchart.com/images/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk-10-usixu-966.webp)

There's rice and seaweed, and you can fry your own eggs too, so while we waited for the main dishes we grilled up an egg first. Our kid seemed to find frying the egg herself entertaining and kept watching from the side. I cooked the yolk slightly soft, put it on warm rice, and ate it with the seaweed — I nearly finished a whole bowl before the main dishes even arrived.

A robot brought our food to the table.

## How the Dongi grilled pork bulgogi bansang tastes

We started with the grilled pork bulgogi bansang. The pork bulgogi with its faint smoky char looked appetizing at a glance. The seasoning wasn't overly sweet or sharp — a savory, salty depth with a subtle sweetness that had soaked all the way into the meat.

With the distinctive smoky char from grilling over direct flame, it was delicious just piled on rice, and it went really well wrapped in seaweed too.

The meat wasn't tough at all — it was tender, so our kid ate more of it than I expected. Pairing each bite with the side dishes really brought out that satisfying, filling quality typical of a Korean bansang meal.

## How spicy is the grilled jeyuk set meal?

The spicy grilled jeyuk (spicy pork) hanjeongsik table was just the thing when you want something a bit spicier and richer.

![Full spread of the spicy grilled jeyuk hanjeongsik table](https://img.superchart.com/images/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk-16-1a43u-966.webp)

The red seasoning coated the meat with a glossy sheen, and it looked quite spicy — but in the mouth, the heat came together with a sweet edge as well.

![Grilled jeyuk coated in glossy red seasoning](https://img.superchart.com/images/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk-17-13ar7-966.webp)

Especially as you chewed, the savory flavor of the meat blended with the spicy seasoning in a way that kept demanding more rice.

![A piece of spicy jeyuk placed on rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk-18-1vxpo-966.webp)

Piling a piece of jeyuk onto a big spoonful of rice and following it with a cool side dish kept my hand reaching back for more. Personally, if the pork bulgogi had a soft, smoky sweetness, the grilled jeyuk had a stronger, spicier pull that really grabbed your appetite.

So I was really glad we ordered both dishes together.

## Why the small tangsuyuk was the most memorable dish

And surprisingly, the dish that stuck with me most that day was the small tangsuyuk. I'd almost tell anyone visiting Cafe Dongi to make sure they order the tangsuyuk too!

![A plate of Cafe Dongi's small tangsuyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk-21-1hmzy-966.webp)

Even in the small size, the portion was generous enough for a family to share. Biting in, the outside shattered light and crisp, while the meat inside stayed moist and tender.

![Cross-section of the crispy tangsuyuk](https://img.superchart.com/images/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk-22-1tqd7-966.webp)

![Tangsuyuk served with sweet and sour sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk-23-6qfb6-966.webp)

The batter wasn't too thick, so it didn't drown out the flavor of the meat, and a savory aroma lingered subtly in the mouth. The sauce had a good sweet-and-sour balance that matched the crisp texture of the tangsuyuk really well. Our kid even ate the tangsuyuk more eagerly than the jeyuk. I already like tangsuyuk quite a bit, but this wasn't the level of a mere side dish added on at a Korean bansang restaurant — this tangsuyuk was good enough that I'd want to order it again on its own.

![Dessert enjoyed at the end of the meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk/cafe-dongi-dongseongro-pork-bulgogi-tangsuyuk-24-kcovl-966.webp)

We finished off the meal with a clean, tasty dessert.

## Is Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro worth it? Final verdict

When you're wandering around Dongseong-ro, you end up eating a lot of Western food or café menus, and every so often you crave a proper Korean spread with warm rice and meat side dishes. For those times, Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a great, no-fuss place to drop into in Daegu's Dongseong-ro. As usual for a place we visit often, our whole family left full, and the combination of smoky pork bulgogi, spicy grilled jeyuk, and crisp-yet-moist tangsuyuk was really excellent this time. If you're looking for somewhere to eat with a kid in Dongseong-ro, or a hearty meal with family, Cafe Dongi Dongseong-ro Main Branch is the kind of place that'll come to mind again. Next time, I want to try some of the other bansang dishes on the menu.
