Two of us shared the 3-person assorted set, the clear beef soup and raw beef sashimi at Usijang Hoegwan — the beef had no gamy smell and a chewy bite, and since rice is unlimited we went through two bowls with the seasoned LA galbi. Since moving to Yeouido, my range has shifted toward the Gongdeok–Yeouido area and I've been scouting good restaurants around here — I heard there was a place that does great raw beef sashimi and beef platters, so I went to check it out! There are about 7 tables of 4! Side dishes are self-serve, so you can take as much as you want. What gave me confidence the moment I walked in — lol — was that most of the customers were men in their 50s and up. Like at Um Yong-baek Grilled Pork, lots of older gentlemen is basically proof of a good restaurant... And the roll of tissue hanging over the table was the highlight lol. Since it was just the two of us, we debated ordering the 2-person set, but seeing the beef rib meat, we decided on the 3-person set haha If you want meat, go for the assorted set; if you want soup, go for the soup set. We like clear broth so we chose this, but you can also switch to spicy soup or beef intestine soup (for an extra charge). First off, I was already so satisfied that the soup came in that big bowl, but the amount of beef piled on top... no matter how much I scooped, more kept appearing underneath lol. Wow, the color alone was insane. It was sliced thick and generously, and I worried that without truly fresh beef it would have a gamey smell, but that worry was completely unfounded haha +) and of course, it's domestic beef!! ㅠㅠㅠ I want to eat it again right now... it was pure chewiness, and paired with the wasabi and cheongyang chili that came with it, every last bite was delicious. This too looked gorgeous. Though the single scallion stalk kind of steals the spotlight lol Gomi diligently grilling the beef rib meat lol I don't like beef cooked hard, so I could eat it quickly. But wow it was so tender and soft ㅠ Gomi, who loves meat, agreed too. The skirt steak was tender too! Just look at the color on that LA galbi... it was the kind of visual and flavor that instantly demands two bowls of rice. And the rice was really well cooked too... I always mess up the water ratio when I make it ㅠ Where did all that meat go...? lolololol Just to confirm, yes, this was two people finishing the 3-person assorted set. If two guys came, even the 3-person set might not be enough. So satisfied haha ## Usijang Hoegwan in Mapo: final verdict - Raw beef sashimi is fresh / zero gamey smell - The assorted set is generously portioned (based on the 3-person set — 3 men might find it not enough) - The soup portion is substantial and the broth is deep in flavor / lots of older customers - You can try several menu items together, like yukhoe bibimbap Being right near Mapo Station makes it very accessible, and it seems great for company dinners too via private rental.
