On evenings when the weather starts to turn cool like it has lately, I especially crave a hot, spicy dish with a cold glass of draft beer. This time, I visited Yetnal Tongdak & Tang Yeonsan Main Branch, a comfortable place for drinks in Yeonsan-dong. The name alone feels wonderfully nostalgic, and you can enjoy old-fashioned whole chicken as well as dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew) and all kinds of chicken dishes that go well with drinks, making it a nice choice for anything from dinner to a drinking session.

### What is the atmosphere inside like?

Once inside, it felt more relaxed and friendly than I expected. What personally stood out to me was how many signatures and traces of visitors covered the walls! Looking around, I found walls packed with signatures, so it felt less like a restaurant that had just opened and more like a place that many people had visited over a long time.

As its name suggests, Yetnal Tongdak & Tang had not only whole-chicken dishes but also a wide range of food that pairs nicely with drinks. What we chose that day was dakdoritang and draft beer! Dakdoritang is a great dish for sharing with several people, so it was just right to order for drinks.

The basic sides were perfect with dakdoritang and chicken dishes: pickled radish, snacks, and cabbage. So good.

And of course, dakdoritang just would not be complete without draft beer! A bite of spicy, savory dakdoritang followed by a sip of cold draft beer makes your palate feel totally refreshed. Since the stew was piping hot, the chilled draft beer felt even more refreshing. So good.

Dakdoritang is a great dish for sharing with several people, so it was just right to order for drinks. What I especially liked was that this was not the usual dakdoritang with only chicken in it—it came generously packed with wheat rice cakes and glass noodles. People who love dakdoritang tend to enjoy extra add-ins like rice cakes and noodles, and this one was loaded from the start, so you could enjoy all those different textures without adding anything separately. (But the glass noodles were seriously so good that I ended up ordering more.)

It arrived heaped generously in a pot and looked appetizing from the very start. There was plenty of chicken, wheat rice cakes, and glass noodles, so it looked filling just sitting there. We let it bubble away and tasted the broth first; its pleasantly spicy, savory seasoning made it a truly good drinking dish. Dakdoritang can be disappointing when the broth is too bland, but here the seasoning had soaked well into the chicken and add-ins, making it good with rice or as food with drinks.

My personal favorite, though, was the wheat rice cakes! When I ate the soft, tender rice cakes with the seasoning, their chewy texture and sweet-spicy flavor worked so well together that I kept reaching for more. You know how some people look for the rice cakes or add-ins before the chicken when they eat dakdoritang? I think they would be especially satisfied here.

And then there were the indispensable glass noodles—I eventually ordered more while eating! The seasoning seeped right into every strand, so when I picked up a big bundle with my chopsticks, I could really taste it. Alternating between the chewy glass noodles, tender chicken, and soft wheat rice cakes, I suddenly noticed the pot was emptying fast. With so many generous rice cakes and glass noodles, it was the kind of dakdoritang that keeps you reaching for another bite.

## A spot that works for both meals and drinks

Yetnal Tongdak & Tang Yeonsan Main Branch was a great place to enjoy generous food and drinks while taking in the nostalgic feel of old-fashioned whole chicken, just as its name suggests. The dakdoritang I tried was especially nice because it had plenty of wheat rice cakes and glass noodles alongside the chicken, so there were many textures to enjoy.

The spicy, savory seasoning worked beautifully with the chicken, while the seasoned wheat rice cakes and glass noodles kept my chopsticks moving! Add cold draft beer, and it was very, very good drinking food too. Above all, I was happy with the reasonable prices, which are hard to find these days! Being able to enjoy dakdoritang and half an old-fashioned whole chicken in the ₩20,000 range seems like a great point for anyone who values good value.
