# Ulsan Korean restaurant lunch with haejangguk: Boksan Haejang

## Visiting information for Boksan Haejang in Sinjeong-dong, Ulsan

It is on the first floor at 476 Munsu-ro, Nam-gu, Ulsan, and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 to 14:30, with last orders at 14:00. It is regularly closed every Monday, and there are spaces for three cars in front of the restaurant.

There was parking for about three cars in front of the restaurant. Luckily, we found a spot and parked right away, but even though it was a weekday, there were quite a lot of customers once lunchtime arrived. The parking out front is not especially spacious, so I think even those three spaces would fill up quickly during the lunch rush. So if there is somewhere else nearby to park, it might be nice to leave the car there and walk over! Seeing so many people even at weekday lunch, it really must be a popular nearby lunch spot.

## A lunch with my mom, with individual meals available

My mom and I had something to do nearby, so we went together. Once we were done, it was exactly lunchtime, and while deciding what to eat, Boksan Haejang's Sinjeong Branch came to mind. Actually, I had been here once before, and I remembered how delicious it was, so I came again without hesitation haha. Once you have eaten somewhere delicious, it somehow comes to mind again whenever you are nearby.

Boksan Haejang also lets each person order an individual meal, rather than everyone having to settle on the same menu, which is convenient. My mom could order what she wanted and I could order what I wanted, so there was no menu dilemma even when we came together. It is in a good spot for lunch after taking care of something near Gonguptap or Ulsan Jungang Hospital, especially when you want a filling meal!

### Be sure to check that it is closed on Mondays

There is one thing you should definitely check before visiting. Since the hours changed, it is regularly closed every Monday! If you go by the old hours, you could make a wasted trip, so it is best to avoid Mondays. If you are planning to go for lunch like us, make sure to remember the Monday closure haha.

## Weekday lunch atmosphere and seating

The day we visited was also a weekday lunchtime, and many people were already eating. When we went in, it was almost full, which made it clear that this place gets quite a lot of customers even for weekday lunch. It seems best to come a little early at lunchtime! There are seats farther inside too, but personally, the window seats looked the nicest. You can see outside and it feels less closed in, so I would like to sit by the window next time.

There were so many customers at lunch that it was difficult to take proper photos, so I took some restaurant photos once people had thinned out a bit. The tables were not too close together and there was a reasonably generous amount of seating, so it did not feel cramped. And there were more people dining alone than I expected! Maybe because you can comfortably order individual dishes, it also felt like an easygoing place to eat alone. It looked like a good place for nearby office workers or anyone who needs to have lunch by themselves.

## Ordering Boksan haejangguk and yukhoe bibimbap

Looking at the menu, there was a surprisingly varied selection. There were rice dishes such as haejangguk (hangover soup), as well as noodle dishes, so it seemed nice for choosing whatever you are craving that day! While looking at the menu, I thought I would like to try the bulgogi next time haha. Today, my mom ordered Boksan haejangguk and I ordered yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef mixed rice). It was nice that we ordered different things and could taste one another's dishes.

Every table had perilla seed powder, sansho pepper, black pepper, and salt, so you can add them to suit your taste. My mom ate hers plain at first, then noticed the perilla seed powder later and added it to her haejangguk; perilla seed powder really does go so well with haejangguk haha. It was also nice to be able to adjust the seasoning or aroma to each person's preference.

There were not an enormous number of side dishes, but instead it felt like just the essentials were served neatly. The selection was good, and above all, every side dish was delicious to me. The kind of taste that makes you keep picking at the banchan (Korean side dishes) before the main dishes arrive haha. They also went well with both the haejangguk and bibimbap, so I did not miss having more side dishes at all.

And how thoughtful that hair ties were prepared at every seat! When you are eating soup or bibimbap and your hair keeps falling forward, it can be surprisingly distracting, so having even hair ties ready felt like such a small but thoughtful touch haha. I think they would be especially useful for people with long hair.

## A generous yukhoe bibimbap with a side of haejangguk

Oh, finally, the yukhoe bibimbap I ordered came out. The moment I saw it, I thought, wow, it is really generous~! What a visual.

When you order the yukhoe bibimbap, a small serving of haejangguk comes with it too. When you are eating only bibimbap, there are moments when you start craving some broth, so having warm haejangguk alongside it was perfect. A bite of yukhoe bibimbap followed by a sip of broth was such a perfect pairing! Even though I ordered bibimbap, I could have soup too, making it an even more substantial meal.

The yukhoe bibimbap also comes with gochujang (Korean red chili paste) on the side. I wondered if it was house-made gochujang because even its color looked lovely and appetizing; you can add as much as you need and mix it to your liking. Its color was quite deep, so I expected it to be spicy, but it was not overly spicy at all. It blended nicely without overpowering the raw beef and vegetables, so it was easy to mix in without any burden.

Then I popped the raw egg yolk on top and mixed, mixed, mixed~! The yolk made everything smoother and richer, bringing together the yukhoe, vegetables, and gochujang beautifully. It already looked delicious, but once I gave it a proper mix, it became even more appetizing.

Even looking back at the photos now, it looks so delicious haha. With the yukhoe, colorful vegetables, and yolk all mixed together, the presentation was spot-on! The taste was great, of course, but seeing such a generous bowl made the visuals truly excellent too. Looking at this photo makes me want to eat the yukhoe bibimbap again lol.

## A lunch shared with warm Boksan haejangguk

It was even nicer to go with my mom and share the Boksan haejangguk and yukhoe bibimbap. We were more satisfied because we could try each other's dishes instead of having only one thing, and above all, both dishes we ordered were delicious. The haejangguk was warm and filling, while the yukhoe bibimbap was generous yet clean-tasting, each with its own appeal. After having a delicious lunch with my mom, it was one of those days that just put me in a good mood!

The Boksan haejangguk was packed with radish and various vegetables, and above all, the beef pieces were really big. Rather than bite-sized, they were big enough to make you think, “Oh, that is a big piece of meat!” haha. The broth was rich and the ingredients were generous, so even one bowl felt filling.

## A hearty lunch near Ulsan's Gonguptap

I remembered enjoying it when I visited last time, and coming back with my mom this time was just as satisfying. There is a varied menu, it is easy to eat alone, and whether you choose haejangguk or bibimbap, it is a great place for a hearty meal! Both the Boksan haejangguk my mom had and the yukhoe bibimbap I had were delicious, so this lunch was a complete success haha.

Personally, I think it is the kind of place where you can visit anytime and leave feeling reliably satisfied. If you are looking for a good lunch near Gonguptap or Ulsan Jungang Hospital, it would be worth stopping by! Next time, I should try the bulgogi I missed this time. :)
