## In short

Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch is a Chinese restaurant in Gupo, Buk-gu, Busan. I tried the 30,000-won B course, from seafood scorched rice soup and eggplant dumplings to sweet-and-sour pork, pepper stir-fry, kkansho shrimp, and black bean noodles. Gupo Jjambbong is a gentle, satisfying pick for a family meal with parents.

## Location and parking at Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch

I visited Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch, famous in Gupo, Busan, for its premium beef rib and abalone jjambbong and seafood nurungji-tang (scorched rice soup). Beyond jjambbong, its well-priced courses make it a popular choice for family meals too. We had the dinner course that day, and I guess you could say it opened my eyes to the appeal of seafood scorched rice soup: good for you and delicious. Even though it is Chinese food, it sat lightly on the stomach, making this a great Gupo spot to visit with parents.

- Hours: 11:00–22:00; last order at 21:30
- Closed every Monday
- Parking for 4 cars right beside the restaurant; parking in front is available at lunchtime
- High chairs available / takeout and delivery available

We parked beside the building. Sirang Park Public Parking Lot is also just a three-minute walk away, so parking there and walking over works well too. It is ₩600 per hour.

## Bus-style seating and a self-service bar

Once inside, the restaurant chairs were a little unusual. They are set up like bus seats, and my boyfriend said the entrance used to be bus-themed too, haha. There is a self-service bar, so you can help yourself if you need more of the basic side dishes.

## Gupo Jjambbong course menu and our order

The menu at Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch was seriously varied. At lunch, there is a great-value ₩15,000 lunch-special course; at dinner, there is the ₩25,000 A course and the ₩30,000 B course, which adds kkansho shrimp. Keep in mind that courses can be ordered from two people. If you are dining solo, there are à la carte dishes and set menus as well.

Alongside the courses, its sanghwang mushroom and sweet-potato-stem premium beef rib and abalone jjambbong, seafood scorched rice soup called Cheonha Jeil-tang, and eggplant dumplings seemed to be popular. We ordered the B course for two (₩30,000 × 2), which included seafood scorched rice soup, eggplant dumplings, and kkansho shrimp.

## The B course starts with seafood scorched rice soup

The restaurant says it aims for healthy Chinese food, and even the drinking water is served as sanghwang mushroom tea rather than regular bottled water. They even had apple cider vinegar prepared as a dessert drink for when you leave. Haha.

The seafood scorched rice soup (Cheonha Jeil-tang) comes with an amazing tableside moment as they pour it directly over a giant piece of scorched rice. They explained that it needs to boil a little longer so the rice can soften before eating. It is packed with nourishing ingredients including shiitake mushrooms, squid, shrimp, and ginkgo nuts.

It was actually my first time trying seafood scorched rice soup, and the broth was so much tastier than I expected. At first it even had a slight samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) feel, while the broth was rich and refreshingly clean. There were elderly diners at the next table ordering the seafood scorched rice soup on its own, and I could see why. This Gupo restaurant really feels restorative. Starting with a warm soup made my stomach feel comfortably warmed too. Personally, it was the dish I remember most from that day—and my top recommendation!

### Crisp eggplant dumplings and light sweet-and-sour pork

The restaurant's most-ordered eggplant dumplings are made by filling thin slices of eggplant with dumpling filling and frying them. One piece is included per person. They were wonderfully crisp rather than soggy—eggplant fritters that even people who dislike eggplant might enjoy.

Gupo Jjambbong's tangsuyuk (Korean sweet-and-sour pork) comes with the sauce separately, but they say it is normally served poured over the pork. Add just a little wasabi and eat it that way. The pork was generously filled, not greasy, and pleasantly light.

### Pepper stir-fry and kkansho shrimp

Next came gochu japchae (stir-fried peppers and pork). I piled it onto the warm flower buns that came heated up. Its mild heat felt like it cut through the richness of the fried dishes.

The kkansho shrimp is included only in the B course. It looked a little different from the kkansho shrimp I normally know, and it was not heavily coated in sauce, so it could be a good option if you are tired of overly sweet kkansho shrimp. There was a generous amount of shrimp, and they were nice and bouncy.

## Finishing with sanghwang mushroom jjajangmyeon

Dessert was jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles). You can choose jjajangmyeon or jjambbong, though jjambbong costs extra. I thought the dark noodles might be buckwheat noodles, but it turns out they use sanghwang mushroom noodles. Each bowl is topped with a young ginseng sprout too, and honestly, it really is just the kind of Gupo restaurant to bring parents to. You eat the ginseng sprout first, then mix everything together. It used wholesome ingredients without giving up on flavor.

## A Gupo Chinese restaurant that is great with parents

Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch is a healthy Chinese restaurant that parents will enjoy too. The seafood scorched rice soup was especially memorable. I think it would be even better on a chilly day. Chinese food often has a reputation for being intense, but the food here was generally light and clean-tasting. If you are looking for a Gupo Chinese restaurant for a family meal with your parents, this is somewhere I would recommend.
