## A hearty Chinese course in Gupo, Busan

When people think of Chinese food, a single bowl of jjajangmyeon or jjambbong usually comes to mind. This time I visited Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch, where you can try several Chinese dishes at once.

Walking in, the interior was bigger than I expected, with plenty of space between tables. My companion and I ordered the A-course for two that day.

Rather than just one dish, we got to work through seafood scorched rice soup, pepper stir-fry, tangsuyuk, eggplant mandu, and a dessert meal in sequence — it was a really filling meal.

## The long history behind Gupo Jjambbong

Looking around the restaurant, framed pieces telling the story of Gupo Jjambbong were hung here and there.

What especially caught my eye were the phrases 'Best Soup Under Heaven,' 'Slurp Down Health' introduced as a golden remedy, and the playful line about golden health being 'crispy crispy.'

With food photos and Gupo Jjambbong's own story woven together, it was fun to look around piece by piece while waiting.

On one wall you could also see clips from KBS Livetoday, SBS Morning Wide, and MBC Today Busan featuring the restaurant.

And alongside the main branch, there was a notice that the Gupo Jjambbong Gimhae Airport branch opened on September 1, 2025.

## Inside Gupo Jjambbong: spacious and spotless

The restaurant overall had a clean yet comfortable atmosphere.

There were several tables, plus window seats on one side, so it didn't feel cramped. The spacing between tables was fairly generous too, making it comfortable to eat with company.

There was a self-service bar inside, and since it's an open layout, you could take in the whole restaurant atmosphere at a glance.

I saw everyone from solo diners to families and groups of friends.

## What comes with the A-course for two (25,000 won each)

The menu my companion and I chose was the A-course for two.

The A-course is ₩25,000 per person, and the menu description listed seafood scorched rice soup, pepper stir-fry, tangsuyuk, eggplant mandu, and dessert jjajang.

It was a good option for us since we wanted to taste a variety of Chinese dishes.

Unlike ordering each dish separately, having the food come out one after another made it feel like we were being treated to a proper full meal.

## Seafood scorched rice soup served sizzling hot

The first thing that really caught my eye was the seafood scorched rice soup.

The sound of it bubbling hot alone got my appetite going. Along with the scorched rice, it was packed with seafood like shrimp and abalone, plus shiitake mushroom, broccoli, and sweet pumpkin.

With all the colorful vegetables in it, the dish looked really appetizing from the start.

What I especially liked was that the scorched rice, soaked well in the broth, let you enjoy both soft parts and parts that still had some texture left.

Scooping it up with a spoon, you'd get scorched rice, seafood, and vegetables all at once — the variety of ingredients was great.

Eating it with the hot broth felt filling and warming, a fitting start to the course.

## Pepper stir-fry with steamed flower buns

Next came the pepper stir-fry and flower bread.

Colorful vegetables and meat were stir-fried to just the right bite, served alongside rolled-up flower bread.

The pepper stir-fry was great on its own, but pairing it with the warm flower bread added a fun extra layer.

With several ingredients stir-fried together, each bite offered a different texture.

## Tangsuyuk with the sauce served on the side

And the one I personally thought was a nice touch — the tangsuyuk!

The tangsuyuk came topped with cabbage, chives, onion, and red chili pepper. But what I liked most was that the sauce was served separately from the start.

The eternal tangsuyuk debate — sauce poured on, or dipped!

Instead of coming pre-doused in sauce, having it served on the side meant that dippers could keep things crispy, and pourers could pour on as much sauce as they wanted.

It's a small thing, but being able to eat it your own way even when your tangsuyuk preferences differ from your companion's was genuinely great.

With the sauce separate, you could also enjoy the texture of the fried pork on its own first, then add sauce later.

## Eggplant mandu: crisp outside, juicy inside

The A-course also includes eggplant mandu (fried dumplings).

From the photo it might look like round fried eggplant, but if you look closely, it's actually filling sandwiched between eggplant and then deep-fried.

Gupo Jjambbong even lists eggplant mandu as one of its signature dishes.

Golden-fried and appetizing from the moment it arrived, it also came with a dipping sauce.

The crispiness of the batter combined with the eggplant's naturally soft texture, giving it a charm different from regular mandu.

If you like eggplant, this is definitely a dish worth trying.

## Finishing the course with jjajang and jjambbong

After thoroughly working through the course dishes, the meal continued into the main dish.

For the dessert meal, you could choose between jjajang and jjambbong — my companion and I each picked one so we could try both.

Do note that choosing jjambbong comes with an extra charge. Extra charges and menu makeup may vary depending on when you visit, so it's worth checking before ordering.

The jjajang came with glossy, rich sauce and noodles, while the jjambbong was topped with onion, various vegetables, and seafood, looking really appetizing.

Even after eating so many dishes beforehand, finishing with noodles felt like a proper wrap-up to a full Chinese course.

If you're visiting as a pair, picking different dishes like we did and sharing a little of each is a good idea too.

## Is the Gupo Jjambbong A-course worth it?

Trying the A-course for two at Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch, what I liked most was that rather than focusing on one dish, you get to enjoy a range of Chinese food evenly.

Starting with the hot seafood scorched rice soup, then moving through pepper stir-fry with flower bread, tangsuyuk, and eggplant mandu, and finishing with jjajang and jjambbong, the menu kept changing throughout the meal so there was never a dull moment.

What stuck with me especially was the tangsuyuk sauce being served separately, letting each person choose sauce-poured or dipped according to taste.

The restaurant was spacious and clean, making it comfortable to eat with company, and the framed stories about Gupo Jjambbong along with the TV feature clippings around the space made for fun browsing too.

If you're looking for a place in Gupo, Busan for a hearty Chinese meal with family or friends, the A-course at Gupo Jjambbong Gupo Main Branch — where you can taste several dishes at once — is worth considering!
