I wanted a solid Korean meal near Suyeong Station in Busan, so I headed to Hanbada Suyeong Main Branch with a friend. It's a half-dried grilled fish specialist run on the know-how of a family of fishermen spanning three generations and 50 years of tradition, so I went in with high expectations.

We ordered the natural half-dried grilled fish set for two, which let us try mackerel, red seabream, Pohang flounder and hairtail all at once. With several kinds of grilled fish plus a refreshing seasonal soup and various side dishes, it made for a really abundant meal.

## How to find Hanbada: right outside Suyeong Station Exit 3

Hanbada Suyeong Main Branch sits in the Dion Place building, about 19m from Suyeong Station Exit 3. Being so close to the subway made it very convenient to get to by public transport.

The restaurant is on the 2nd floor — you enter the building's 1st floor and go up the stairs on the left. The Hanbada sign is visible from outside, and there are arrow signs inside too, so it wasn't hard to find.

If you're driving, there's a mechanical parking garage in the building with up to 1.5 hours free. That said, spaces are limited and large SUVs or vans may have trouble entering and parking, so keep that in mind before visiting.

## Sleek interior and wide-open city views

Walking in, the atmosphere felt a bit different from a typical grilled fish restaurant. Exposed ceilings, soft lighting, and warm-toned wooden tables and partitions came together for an overall stylish, comfortable feel.

The tables were spaced fairly generously, with long tables for larger groups and reserved seating available too. Wooden partitions divided the space just enough, making it seem like a good spot for family meals, gatherings, or group dinners. High chairs were also available, which is convenient for families with kids.

Since the restaurant is on the 2nd floor, the windows look down over the road and passing traffic. With nothing blocking the view, it felt open and I liked being able to eat with a city view of the streetscape below. Sitting by the sunlit window seats would feel even brighter and more open.

Each table has an ordering tablet installed. It was convenient to browse menu photos, descriptions, and prices at a glance and order right from the table.

## The side dishes: varied and generous

After ordering, they first brought out cold tea in a bottle so we could pour it into paper cups ourselves. Then a milky pre-meal drink arrived along with a bunch of side dishes.

The sides included japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), napa cabbage kimchi, cucumber muchim, mushroom and quail egg braised in soy sauce, cabbage salad topped with corn, stir-fried fish cake, pickled peppers, and boiled cabbage with ssamjang (dipping sauce).

True to a grilled fish specialist, the sides were well-suited to pair with fish, each plated neatly. The glossy stir-fried japchae in particular came in a generous portion, making the whole spread feel abundant even before the main course arrived.

The crunchy cucumber muchim and napa cabbage kimchi were great for refreshing the palate between bites of grilled fish, and you could also wrap fish flesh with boiled cabbage and ssamjang like a lettuce wrap.

## Mackerel, red seabream, Pohang flounder and hairtail on one plate

Soon after, a large square plate arrived piled generously with four kinds of half-dried grilled fish. That day's lineup was mackerel, red seabream, Pohang flounder, and hairtail.

I liked being able to compare the different flavors and textures of each fish on one plate. Overall, the fish were grilled to a nice golden brown, with a savory exterior and plump, tender flesh inside that went well with rice.

The large fish were served whole, which looked generous, and it was satisfying for two people to split several varieties. Compared to ordering just one type of fish, getting to enjoy a range of textures and cuts was the real charm of the assorted grilled fish set.

The grilled fish set also comes with a seasonal soup. It's kept warm on a portable gas burner as you eat.

The clear broth held fish, bean sprouts, green onion, minari (water celery), and red chili pepper, among other ingredients. Ladling it out, there was a generous amount of fish flesh and vegetables — enjoying the warm broth alongside the grilled fish and rice made the whole set feel even heartier.

## Free coffee and hot chocolate to finish

After the meal, we used the self-serve drink machine set up in the restaurant. Not just coffee but hot chocolate was free too, which was a nice bonus.

Being able to enjoy a warm drink right after a hearty meal meant we didn't need to head to a separate café to wrap things up. I also liked that coffee lovers and those who prefer sweeter drinks can each pick what suits them.
