As the weather turned cool, I went on a fall trip to Gyeongju with my boyfriend. Craving something hearty but clean, we visited Goyu, a Korean restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil — let me introduce it.

## Waiting times and how to put your name down

Goyu can have a wait during weekend meal times, so you'll need to register through the Table-ing app or sign up in person. We got lucky and were seated right away :)

## Seating and mood: the counter seats facing the open kitchen

Goyu's seating is made up of 4-person tables and dachi (counter) seats. The place itself is fairly large, but since the tables are spaced well apart, the actual seat count isn't huge. Maybe that's why it felt calm and quiet enough for a comfortable meal — which really suited the name Goyu, meaning 'unique' or 'one's own.'

There are high chairs too, and the space is easy to navigate with a stroller, so there were actually a lot of families with young kids. We sat at the counter, which also had large, well-spaced tables, so it was comfortable there too.

The kitchen is an open kitchen, so from the counter seats we got to watch the whole cooking process, which was fun. The clean kitchen and the cooking itself were nice to see.

## What's on the menu at Goyu

From main dishes like pork kimchi jjim (braised pork with kimchi), soy-marinated pork with seasonal salad, buckwheat noodles, gondeure (dried aster greens) rice, and doenjang ssambap, to side dishes like cold pork, potato pancake, eggplant gangjeong, and bulgogi — they take a wide range of Korean rice, noodle, and meat dishes and reinterpret them with a sophisticated touch. You really feel the 'Korean dining' vibe haha.

Goyu also sells traditional Korean liquors, which seemed like they'd pair nicely and lightly with the food. Makgeolli/cocktails, fruit wines, cheong/yakju, and distilled spirits — plenty of options depending on your taste.

There were hair ties on every table, which women always need while eating — such a nice touch from the owner. As someone who never has a hair tie on hand, I put it to good use 🙇🏻‍♀️

## The set table: beef and radish soup

As a base, we were served beef radish soup and kimchi. The soup was packed with beef, and the radish had real depth of flavor — a perfect appetizer to get the appetite going.

## Hanwoo yukhoe bibim buckwheat noodles and gangdoenjang ssambap

We watched everything come together in the open kitchen, freshly made. We ordered the hanwoo yukhoe bibim buckwheat noodles and the doenjang ssambap.

The sweet-and-tangy chogochujang-style sauce over buckwheat noodles had a chewy texture without being too sharp or spicy, so it'd work fine even for kids. The yukhoe (raw beef) was fresh and chewy as expected, and it paired perfectly with the noodles.

This was the dish I'd been most looking forward to! Meat with gandoenjang (thick soybean paste) — how could that go wrong. Even writing this post now, I want to eat it again 🤤

Perilla leaf ssam wraps with carrot and egg garnish — pretty to look at and tasty too, exactly the kind of dish that hits the spot on a date. Even my boyfriend, who doesn't love vegetables, ate it happily and said it was good. The gandoenjang wasn't too salty, just mellow, and paired really well with the cold pork.

They also sell yakgwa (honey cookie) for dessert, but as a self-declared matcha addict, I went with the pistachio matcha dried persimmon.

The first bite is dried persimmon with pistachio, but the more you chew, the more matcha flavor comes through in the aftertaste. The slightly bitter matcha balanced beautifully with the sweet persimmon — a genuinely tasty, modern take on dried persimmon. It had a fresh, unusual flavor that kept crossing my mind afterward, and I think it'd make a nice gift for older family members too.

If you want clean, quiet space and neatly plated Korean food on Hwangnidan-gil, I'd recommend Goyu — a Korean dining restaurant that works great as a Hwangnidan-gil restaurant and a Hwangnidan-gil date spot.
