## In short

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is a Chinese restaurant in Haeundae, Busan, with sea views. For a family birthday dinner, we had jajangmyeon, brisket jjamppong, mapo tofu rice, and cream shrimp, with private rooms available by reservation. Verdict: come for the ocean-view table, rich jjamppong, and crisp cream shrimp.

For Dad's birthday, I wanted to go somewhere with a nice atmosphere, so I searched for good restaurants in Marine City and found a place that catches both rabbits—great views and great food. It is a Chinese restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows, and in autumn and winter they even open the doors, so the sea is right in front of you. The jjamppong and cooked dishes are delicious, and there are private rooms too, so I recommend it to anyone looking for a private-room restaurant in Marine City. Here begins my honest story of this Chinese restaurant in Marine City, perfect for a special day—from the atmosphere of our table to the jajangmyeon, jjamppong, and cream shrimp I actually tried.

## Location and atmosphere at Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch

Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is at 51 Marine City 3-ro, Haeundae-gu, Busan. It is above Subyeon Choego Dwaeji Gukbap, right in the heart of Marine City, so it is not hard to find. There is no separate parking lot, but you can park along the roadside directly in front. My family met at Dongbaek Station and walked over together. In this kind of weather lately, it was just perfect for walking.

The very first thing I noticed when I opened the door was not the food or the interior, but the blue Marine City sea view! The sea spreads out refreshingly beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows, and when the weather is nice, they open the doors—making this the Chinese restaurant with the best view in Marine City. Once inside, the soft lighting gives it the feeling of an upscale Chinese restaurant, so the atmosphere is lovely too.

There are private rooms too, and if you reserve in advance, you can use either a group room or a private room, which is nice. The one downside is that the rooms do not have ocean views. Still, they are great for enjoying your food slowly and chatting cozily with family.

If you sit by the window, you can eat while looking out at the Marine City sea, and the feeling is quite different during the day and in the evening. Personally, I prefer coming in the daytime. If you are looking for a great Marine City restaurant or an ocean-view restaurant in Marine City, this is the answer.

## Bueokgan Chinese really does jjamppong right

- Bueokgan jajangmyeon
- Brisket jjamppong
- Brisket mapo tofu rice

The first dish out was BUUK jajangmyeon (black bean noodles). Their gan-jjajang, served with a soft-cooked egg, is delicious too, but our family prefers the standard Bueokgan jajangmyeon, so that is what we ordered—and yes, it was delicious as always.

Bueokgan Chinese seems to get more delicious every time I visit!! The noodles come generously topped with sauce; the gently cooked onions and cabbage first bring up a sweet aroma, followed by the deep, incredible savory flavor of chunjang (black bean paste).

Rather than being overly sweet, it naturally blends the nutty richness from the pork with the vegetables' sweetness. Sometimes jajangmyeon sauce can feel heavy as I eat, but each bite of onion makes Bueokgan's jajangmyeon feel a little lighter. Instead of just tiny scattered bits, there are satisfying thick pieces of meat too, making it fun to chew. I even order a bowl of rice and enjoy it as jajangbap (black bean noodles sauce over rice)—a quietly special treat that I recommend.

Personally, Bueokgan Chinese's number-one dish is the brisket beef jjamppong. Even the deep color of the broth makes it look wonderful.

The savory flavor released from the brisket had soaked into the broth, giving it a depth quite different from seafood jjamppong. It has a pleasant kick, supported by the aroma of meat, and the wok-smoky finish had me scooping up broth again and again.

Meat and vegetables came up together through the noodles, so every chopstickful tasted different. Maybe that is why my chopsticks kept reaching for the jjamppong.

We ordered mapo tofu because Mom loves it. The five-layer pork belly mapo tofu rice had its red sauce moistly soaking between the grains of rice, with a generous topping of pork belly, so it looked properly impressive from the start.

The sauce is a little spicy and salty, with a slight mala (Sichuan pepper) aroma at the end. The aroma is not too strong, so even I, someone who dislikes mala, could enjoy it.

Putting soft tofu, savory browned five-layer pork belly, and plain white rice into one bite gave me spice, nuttiness, and saltiness all at once. The combination was so good.

## Cream shrimp lovers, gather around

Bueokgan Chinese's cooked dishes are popular too, and on weekdays you can enjoy tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour fried pork) at a good value. Since it was Dad's birthday, we wanted a special dish and chose cream shrimp instead—everyone, applause!!

The outside of the fried shrimp was crisp and the inside springy. One bite brought out the shrimp's savory flavor, then the cream sauce, which had soaked in nicely, hit at the end with sweetness. This is a dish you absolutely have to order at Bueokgan.

The cream sauce was rich with a gentle sweetness and a faintly refreshing note at the end. Eaten with lettuce, the crisp, crunchy, nutty, and moist textures were completely my thing.

## For an ocean-view Chinese restaurant, this is the one

It is hard to find a delicious Chinese restaurant with an ocean view in Haeundae, but Bueokgan Chinese Marine City Branch is a Marine City favorite that even delivers good value. Above all, it has a great atmosphere and private rooms, so it would be wonderful for a special-day date or a family meal.
