## In short

Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch is a Korean restaurant near Mangwon Station in Mapo, Seoul. We ordered medium bossam and suyuk with bibim kalguksu, enjoying tender pork, radish salad, and pleasantly mild chewy noodles. Verdict: a filling pick when you want bossam and kalguksu together.

It had been a while since my husband and I had gone out around Mangwon Station :) There are so many good places to eat around Mangwon and Hapjeong that I always end up wondering where we should eat whenever we go. This time, I was craving bossam (boiled pork wraps) for the first time in ages, so after searching around, we visited Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch.

Since the name itself includes ppyeo kalguksu (bone broth knife-cut noodles), I thought it would be a kalguksu specialty spot, but they also sell bossam and suyuk (boiled pork), which seemed perfect for the two of us to share!! We ordered the medium bossam and suyuk for ₩42,000 plus bibim kalguksu, and while the bossam was delicious, we absolutely loved the bibim kalguksu too, haha.

## Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch: location and parking near Mangwon Station

If you are driving, there is no dedicated parking lot, so you will need to use a nearby paid parking lot. Apparently, Cheonggiwa 2 Street Public Parking Lot or Hyundai Distribution Parking Lot are nearby options. We wandered around Mangwon Station that day and walked over, and it was easy enough to get to.

It is at 84 Yanghwa-ro 7-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, and about six minutes from Mangwon Station Exit 1. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with a break from 3 to 5 p.m. Takeout is available too.

They are also running an event where you get three dumplings or a drink for taking part in a receipt review, so it might be nice to join in!

## A yellow sign and roomy table seating

When we arrived, the big yellow sign reading “Ppyeo Kalguksu” made the place easy to find. It had a bit of that long-running local favorite feel, and it seemed like a place that really knows bossam and kalguksu.

There is even a 10% discount event for firefighters, military personnel, and police officers—aw, the owner is amazing!

Inside, it was quite clean, with a variety of two- and four-person tables. The tables were not squeezed together, and the interior was divided into separate areas, so it looked suitable for a family meal or a visit with a larger group too.

There was actually a group of students eating together when we visited. That made me think it could also work for a company dinner or gathering around Mangwon Station or Hapjeong. It has a semi-open kitchen, so you can glimpse inside, and everything looked well kept, which put me in a good mood even before the meal.

## Bossam and kalguksu menu prices

- Large bossam & suyuk ₩49,000 / medium ₩42,000
- Ppyeo kalguksu ₩12,000 / bibim kalguksu ₩11,500
- Ppyeo tangbap ₩12,000 / spicy ppyeo kalguksu and spicy ppyeo tangbap ₩12,500 each
- Perilla oil kalguksu ₩11,000 / kongguksu (soybean noodle soup) ₩11,500 / Namhae anchovy kalguksu ₩10,500

- Perilla oil grilled tofu ₩12,000 / five meat-and-chive dumplings ₩7,000

Looking over the menu, ppyeo kalguksu is the main item, just as the restaurant name suggests, and bossam and suyuk are available too. Ppyeo kalguksu is ₩12,000, and I got even more curious when I saw that it won the 2024 Innovative Korean Award. There were lots of other choices as well, including stir-fried squid and seasoned acorn jelly.

Also, if you order bossam, you can add anchovy kalguksu for ₩5,000, so that is worth noting!! Eek!! We wanted bossam as the main event that day, so we ordered the medium bossam and suyuk.

Beside the table, spoons, chopsticks, wet wipes, and tissues were all nicely stocked!

## Tender bossam with radish salad

After ordering and waiting a little, a generous bossam spread arrived. It seemed like a good amount even for two women, and my husband and I felt satisfyingly full without feeling short on food. At a glance, the bossam pork looked softly boiled.

![A generous bossam set meal](https://img.superchart.com/images/mangwon-bossam-bibim-kalguksu-date/mangwon-bossam-bibim-kalguksu-date-10-1iyog-900.webp)

When I picked up a piece and tried it, I loved how tender and moist it was. Bossam can be disappointing if it is too dry, even when you wrap it in several layers, but the meat here was soft enough to enjoy on its own.

There were plenty of accompaniments too: garlic, spicy peppers, ssamjang (savory soybean paste), salted shrimp, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), fresh kimchi, napa cabbage, and musaengchae (seasoned shredded radish). I always make sure to eat musaengchae with bossam, and this one went really well with the pork.

Lay down a leaf of napa cabbage, add a piece of bossam, pile on plenty of musaengchae, then add garlic for one big bite! The crisp cabbage, sweet-and-tangy radish salad, and soft bossam all came together so well. A little salted shrimp added a savory, salty depth that kept me reaching for more. This is exactly why bossam is best with all these different sides, haha.

## Bibim kalguksu mild enough for a spice wimp

The other item I was just as curious about as the bossam was the bibim kalguksu. I wondered what cold mixed kalguksu would taste like at a kalguksu restaurant, so we ordered it—and it was soooo delicious too.

Because it is served cold, the noodles felt a little chewier than hot kalguksu. I am normally a total spice wimp, so I worry about the heat first whenever I eat mixed noodles, but this was not overwhelming at all. It was sweet and tangy, thoroughly coated in sauce, and really woke up my appetite!

What I especially loved was the crunch-crunch-crunchy vegetables mixed in~~ It was not just bibim kalguksu with noodles tossed in sauce; the vegetables added texture and made the flavor even better.

The noodles themselves were chewy, so having a piece of bossam and then a chopstickful of bibim kalguksu was a pretty great combination. My husband said, “This is better than the famous kalguksu places in Daejeon, isn’t it?” Hahaha. He lived in Daejeon for a long time, so he knows pretty much every good restaurant there!! Just how delicious was it???

Warm broth comes with the bibim kalguksu too—such a thoughtful touch!

## Waiting chairs and after-meal essentials

There were chairs in front of the restaurant for waiting, too. Like a popular spot that really does get a queue, they had even prepared space for that. Depending on when you visit, you may have to wait, so it could be a good idea to allow some extra time.

On the way out, there are candies and toothpicks for customers, so it would be nice to take exactly one per person~

## A day of bossam and bibim kalguksu

We wrapped up the day happily after a little outing around Mangwon Station and a delicious bossam meal for the first time in ages. Personally, the tender bossam and musaengchae combination was my favorite. The bossam portion itself was generous enough for the two of us too.

Adding bibim kalguksu meant the clean, nutty flavor of the bossam and the sweet-and-tangy noodles alternated nicely, so we could keep eating without getting tired of it. I especially liked that even a spice wimp like me could enjoy the bibim kalguksu without any burden. Since this is a place known for its ppyeo kalguksu, I want to try that myself next time.

Since you can have anchovy kalguksu for ₩5,000 when you order bossam, I think that combination would be a good choice for anyone wanting to enjoy bossam and kalguksu together.

The restaurant is roomy and has a variety of tables, so it was nice for a date with my husband and seems suitable for family meals, gatherings, or company dinners too!! If you want a hearty meal near Mangwon Station, I recommend Pyeongidambaek Ppyeo Kalguksu Main Branch. We had a very filling meal of bossam and bibim kalguksu that day, but next time I definitely need to try the award-winning 2024 ppyeo kalguksu too. ꒰ა(..◜ᴗ◝..)໒꒱
