## In short

Matdeurin Sundubu Haejangguk & Gamjatang is a Korean soft tofu and pork-spine stew restaurant on Jukheon-gil in Gangneung, near Ojukheon. Instead of the usual sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew), the writer ordered the sundubu (kongbiji) gamjatang for 35,000 won with a side of fried shrimp, and the kongbiji (ground soybean pulp) melted into the broth for a nutty depth next to the crisp shrimp. For anyone who wants soft tofu served a different way in Gangneung, Matdeurin's sundubu gamjatang is the answer.

I happened to be looking around Ojukheon and searching for somewhere to eat, and the short distance made it easy to fit into the route. After sightseeing you end up walking more than you'd expect, so going far for a meal starts to feel like a hassle — if you're looking for a Gangneung restaurant near Ojukheon where you can eat well, this one is easy to pair with a visit.

## Inside Matdeurin: atmosphere and seating

Walking into Matdeurin, the interior was more spacious and clean than I'd expected. Being near a tourist spot, I thought it might feel crowded and chaotic, but there was decent space between tables, so I could eat without feeling cramped. Overall it leaned less toward a flashy interior and more toward a comfortable, friendly restaurant where you can sit and have a hot, satisfying meal.

There were plenty of seats set up, so it looked good for family meals or groups too. Given the spot's convenient location for tourists visiting Ojukheon, it also had the feel of a place where you drop by for an easy meal mid-trip.

## Ordering the sundubu (kongbiji) gamjatang for 35,000 won

What really caught my eye at Matdeurin was the dish that puts sundubu and kongbiji (soybean pulp) into gamjatang (pork bone stew). I like both sundubu and gamjatang, but I'd never had them together, so I couldn't quite imagine the taste. That's exactly why I wanted to try this instead of a plain gamjatang.

And I'd never had kongbiji before, so I was curious about that too... so I went with the sundubu (kongbiji) gamjatang for ₩35,000!!

They set up the basics for us too~ tongs made it easy to eat the gamjatang + and of course the dipping sauce for the meat!

## What does Matdeurin's kongbiji broth taste like?

The moment the food arrived, the first thing I noticed was that it clearly felt different from the gamjatang I usually eat. When you think of gamjatang, you picture red broth with big pork spine bones and a mountain of perilla leaves and vegetables on top.

Adding sundubu and kongbiji on top made it look even more generous from the start. At first the kongbiji seems to sit separately, but as the pot bubbles away, it gradually dissolves into the broth. Stir with a ladle down to the bottom and big chunks of sundubu come up with it too.

### Pork spine meat and the broth

It's gamjatang, so you can't skip the meat. Once the broth had boiled enough, I moved a spine bone to my plate — it was a good, hearty size. I picked the meat off little by little with my chopsticks, and rather than dry, it was moist from soaking up the broth, with the fun of hunting for the tender bits tucked between the bones. A bite of meat followed right by a hot spoonful of broth — they really went well together.

### Meat, soft tofu and kongbiji in one spoonful

But here, rather than just eating the broth on its own, scooping up sundubu and kongbiji together tasted better. Put a piece of meat on the spoon, add a bit of soft, cloudy sundubu, then scoop up broth with the kongbiji mixed in — after the deep flavor of the pork comes the nutty taste of the soybeans.

Sundubu is so soft it dissolves quickly in your mouth, while kongbiji has a texture with the faintest bit of chew, so even though they're both soybean foods, the textures were subtly different. That combination is probably why I kept going back for more broth.

## Is the fried shrimp side worth adding?

I also ordered the shrimp tempura as a side, and the outside was incredibly crispy!! Crunchy on the outside with the shrimp meat packed in and moist on the inside — I was impressed, wondering if this was really a gamjatang restaurant... The size was huge and the seasoning was spot on, so kids would probably love it too. This Gangneung restaurant near Ojukheon really doesn't have a weak menu item...

## Would I order Matdeurin's sundubu gamjatang again?

I originally ordered this dish out of curiosity — what would gamjatang with sundubu and kongbiji even taste like? — but once I actually ate it, the combination worked better than expected and stuck with me. I especially liked how the kongbiji dissolved into the broth as it simmered, getting richer and more savory, and eating soft meat and sundubu together in one spoonful gave a flavor you can't really get from a regular gamjatang.

If you want sundubu in Gangneung but are looking for something other than the usual sundubu jjigae, this is worth trying. When you're craving a hot, filling meal after touring Ojukheon, Matdeurin Sundubu Haejangguk & Gamjatang — a Gangneung restaurant near Ojukheon — is a place to enjoy sundubu and gamjatang in a different way.
