## In short

Tareudang is a takeout dessert shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju selling fresh fruit mochi and tarts. The first sales round had already sold out by 4pm, so waiting in line for the 4:30pm second round brought home three flavors — mango, peach and gold kiwi mochi — each stuffed with a whole piece of big seasonal fruit and each tasting completely different. If there is a flavor at Tareudang you really want, arriving early is the safer plan.

On this Gyeongju trip, I finally made it to Tareudang, a place I'd known by name for a while. I'd seen it so often on social media and in other reviews that I really wanted to try it myself — especially since it kept coming up whenever I searched for Gyeongju fruit sando (fruit sandwich-style desserts) or fruit desserts.

## What is Tareudang? A takeout dessert shop on Gyeongju's Hwangnidang-gil

Tareudang is a fairly famous dessert spot on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju. It's a small shop selling fruit mochi and tarts, and it's run more as a takeout-focused dessert shop than a café where you'd sit and linger.

![Exterior of Tareudang, a dessert shop on Hwangnidang-gil, Gyeongju](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three-01-3ilha-900.webp)

Looking through reviews, a lot of people talk about the mochi packed with big chunks of fresh fruit.

This time, instead of the tart, I bought and tried the fruit mochi I'd been curious about.

![Display of Tareudang mochi made with seasonal fruit](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three-04-2m1l0-900.webp)

They sell mochi made with various fruits depending on the season, along with tarts and other dessert menu items.

## Sold out at 4pm, second batch of mochi at 4:30pm

I actually first showed up at Tareudang around 4pm, figuring that would still be early enough to buy something. But when I got there, the first sales round had already sold out.

![Notice announcing the first sales round is sold out at Tareudang](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three-05-sk7wa-900.webp)

According to the signage, the second round wouldn't start until 4:30pm. 'Wait, am I not going to get any?' I thought, a little panicked haha. So I wandered around the rest of Hwangnidang-gil and came back right at 4:30.

![Waiting outside Tareudang for the 4:30pm second sales round](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three-06-qdfid-900.webp)

![Line forming in front of Tareudang](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three-07-9datm-900.webp)

But when I came back, there was already a line forming. Timing really matters at popular spots. Luckily, after waiting in line, I managed to buy the mochi I wanted.

## Three Tareudang fruit mochi flavors picked in the second round

![Box of packaged fruit mochi from Tareudang](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three-08-11x1w-900.webp)

I chose three: mango, peach, and gold kiwi. Each mochi is fairly large on its own, so even just three felt like a decent amount to bring home.

When I opened the package, the colorful fruit made everything look great for photos too. I get why so many people looking for pretty desserts on Hwangnidang-gil come here.

### 🥭 Sweet mango mochi

I started with the mango. For mango, the sweetness of the fruit itself is what matters most.

![One mango mochi from Tareudang](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three-10-1q35p-900.webp)

Inside the soft, chewy mochi skin was a big chunk of mango, and biting into it, the mango's sweetness came through immediately.

The chewiness of the mochi combined with the soft texture of the mango made it feel quite different from a regular chapssaltteok (sweet rice cake).

### 🍑 Tart-sweet peach mochi

The one I was personally most curious about was the peach. The peach's aroma and texture really came through, pairing well with the chewy rice cake skin. It was sweet but also had that distinctive peach tanginess, giving it a different charm from the mango.

If you like seasonal summer fruit, this is worth picking at least once.

### 🥝 Gold kiwi mochi, the surprise of the three

Third up was gold kiwi!

![Tareudang's gold kiwi mochi](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three-13-sgw5o-900.webp)

Unlike mango or peach, gold kiwi has that sweet-tart flavor, which made it feel a bit fresher.

When you've been eating sweet desserts, sometimes you crave something a little tangy — and that's exactly when gold kiwi hits the spot!!

## A dessert to eat while walking Hwangnidang-gil

Tareudang's biggest strength is that it's a light dessert perfect for eating while strolling around Hwangnidang-gil.

![Holding Tareudang mochi while walking Hwangnidang-gil](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three-16-lvo8k-900.webp)

Rather than a café where you sit for a long time, it seems better suited for grabbing tasty mochi to go and eating while sightseeing, or bringing it back to your accommodation.

Since it's fruit-based, it also felt a bit fresher and lighter compared to regular cakes or bread.

![A fresh, fruit-filled Tareudang dessert](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three/gyeongju-tardang-fruit-mochi-three-18-1ienu-900.webp)

They also sell tarts, so next time I'd like to try those too, not just the mochi.

## Visiting Tareudang? Go a little earlier

If you're planning to visit in the late afternoon like I did, I'd recommend checking the sales hours and stock ahead of time. If you have a specific flavor in mind, it's much less stressful to go a bit earlier rather than later.

## Looking for a special dessert on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju

I finally visited Tareudang after knowing the name for so long, and it was much more fun than I expected — it wasn't just eating a mochi, but eating a dessert with a whole piece of big seasonal fruit inside. The sweetness of mango, the tangy-sweetness of peach, and the freshness of gold kiwi were all different, which made picking three flavors part of the fun.

If you want something a little different from the usual bread or café dessert on Hwangnidang-gil, this is a decent place to stop by.

Especially if you're like me and were curious about fruit mochi while looking up Gyeongju Hwangnidang-gil dessert spots, it's worth adding to your trip.
