## In short

Bueongi Maeul is a Korean barbecue restaurant in Jung-gu, Busan, serving fresh emperor beef rib meat grilled over charcoal. I enjoyed it with salted pollock roe, scallion salad, and a hearty soybean paste stew. Verdict: the beef-and-pollock-roe pairing was the standout.

## A welcoming exterior in a Ggangtong Market alley

While wandering the alleys in search of food at Busan's Ggangtong Market, I found this spot—and its welcoming exterior already had that unmistakable great-restaurant energy. Bueongi Maeul (부엉이마을) has a charming exterior that really gives off the feel of a long-established local place.

The warm yellow lighting made it stand out even from afar. I heard it is already a well-known word-of-mouth favorite among Bupyeong-dong locals, so my expectations were even higher.

Their refrigerated-aged pork ribs, made with a secret sauce by a galbi master with 40 years of experience, are apparently famous too, so I definitely need to try the pork ribs next time.

## Inside, round metal tables in a pojangmacha-style setting

Inside, there were round metal tables in a pojangmacha (Korean street-tent bar)-style setting, making it just right for a drink. It felt relaxed and welcoming, so it would be lovely with friends or a date, and it seemed perfectly suitable for a company dinner too.

## Ordering fresh emperor beef rib meat

As befits a restaurant specializing in beef rib meat, Bueongi Maeul sells its emperor beef rib meat by the platter. You can choose fresh or marinated beef rib meat, and we ordered one platter of fresh emperor beef rib meat because we wanted to taste the meat itself.

## Side dishes, including salted pollock roe

![Basic side dishes with lettuce and perilla leaves](https://img.superchart.com/images/busan-kkangtong-market-beef-ribs/busan-kkangtong-market-beef-ribs-07-m562w-900.webp)

Once we had ordered, the side dishes were set out: fresh lettuce and perilla leaves, crisp chili peppers, plus scallion salad and pickled onions to bring out the flavor of the meat!

What made it especially memorable was that salted pollock roe, chopped chili, and wasabi were included too. Can you imagine putting salted pollock roe on beef? It was truly a dream pairing.

A bubbling steamed egg dish also came as part of the basic spread, which was perfect for settling our stomachs before the meat was cooked.

## Emperor beef rib meat grilled over charcoal

At last, the emperor beef rib meat we had been waiting for arrived! Just look at that gorgeous bright-red meat.

The marbling was a work of art—just looking at it made my mouth water. We put the mushrooms that came with it on the grill as well.

We carefully placed each piece of meat on the well-heated charcoal grill. The sizzling sound and delicious aroma tickled my nose. The heat was strong, so the meat cooked quickly, which was great.

I dipped a nicely cooked piece of beef rib meat in salt and took a bite. The juices filling my mouth and the tender texture were just the best. This time I tried it with the scallion salad, whose sweet-and-tangy flavor cut through the richness of the beef and made it even more delicious.

With a little salted pollock roe on top, the savory-salty roe and nutty beef came together as a real delicacy. Along with the roe, there were various sauces such as chopped chili and wasabi, so I never got tired of it and enjoyed every last bite.

## Finishing with home-style soybean paste stew

![Home-style soybean paste stew in an earthenware pot](https://img.superchart.com/images/busan-kkangtong-market-beef-ribs/busan-kkangtong-market-beef-ribs-16-1ayp1-900.webp)

After enjoying the meat, we ordered doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew), a Korean soul food. The home-style soybean paste stew arrived bubbling in an earthenware pot, and even its rich, comforting aroma was on another level.

It was even more appetizing because it was generously filled with tofu, zucchini, radish, and more. One spoonful of the broth revealed a deep, savory flavor, and I finished a whole bowl of rice in no time.

Bueongi Maeul had it all: delicious meat, a warm atmosphere, and kind service. If you are traveling to Busan, I strongly recommend stopping by at least once. When I return to Busan, I definitely want to visit again and try the pork ribs too.
