## In short

Samhyeongje Gimbap, Sangam branch is a takeout-focused gimbap restaurant in Nuritkum Square in Mapo, Seoul. I took away three yubu gimbap varieties; all were generously filled, while the spicy fish cake version had a subtle smoky flavor and was hotter than expected.

After working in Sangam for five years, I often look for somewhere to grab a simple meal. This time, I took away three kinds of yubu gimbap (fried tofu seaweed rice rolls) from Samhyeongje Gimbap, Sangam branch at Nuritkum Square.

## Where is Samhyeongje Gimbap, Sangam branch, and when is it open?

The shop is in Room 1029 on B1 of Nuritkum Square, 396 World Cup buk-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul. You can get off at the Nuritkum Square bus stop, and it was also conveniently located for walking over from nearby offices.

At the time of the original post, its listed weekday hours were 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with last orders at 7:00 PM. On Saturdays, it was listed as open from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with last orders at 2:00 PM, and it was regularly closed on Sundays.

## Which gimbap did I take away, and how did it work?

Samhyeongje Gimbap centers on gimbap made with yubu, or fried tofu. I was curious how it would taste compared with the gimbap I usually eat.

It operates as a takeout-only shop, so it was easy to choose the gimbap I wanted and pick it up. There were many varieties to choose from depending on your taste.

I chose the original yubu gimbap, spicy fish cake yubu gimbap, and kimchi tuna yubu gimbap. They also sold tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and ramen, but I tried only the three gimbap varieties this time.

Once the gimbap was packaged, I simply put it into a bag myself.

There was also soup base that I could take myself and mix with water. I liked being able to bring along something soupy to have with the gimbap.

## How did the three yubu gimbap varieties differ?

When I opened the package, the gimbap was thick and generously filled. Even though the rolls were quite large, they were neatly rolled and did not fall apart.

### Is the original yubu gimbap easy to eat?

The original yubu gimbap did not feel like it was mostly rice; it was filled with a variety of ingredients, giving it plenty of texture. The lightly sweet, nutty flavor of the fried tofu worked well with the other ingredients, and it was savory without being overly intense. The ingredients also felt fresh overall.

I thought it would be good as a simple breakfast or alongside another item for lunch. If it is your first time trying it, the original would be a good place to start.

### How spicy was the spicy fish cake yubu gimbap?

This was the one I reached for most among the three. The chewy fish cake and spicy seasoning went well with the fried tofu. I expected only mild heat, but it was quite spicy for me, with a subtle smoky flavor as I ate it.

It was so fully filled that one roll felt substantial on its own. If you usually enjoy spicy gimbap or fish cake, this is the one of the three I would recommend.

### How was the kimchi tuna yubu gimbap different from regular tuna gimbap?

With fried tofu added to the familiar combination of kimchi and tuna, it tasted different from regular tuna gimbap. The nutty, mild flavor of tuna came together with kimchi's tang and slight heat. The kimchi kept it from feeling rich and gave it a clean finish.

## Was it still a filling meal after takeout?

The miso soup I brought home was simple to prepare: I only had to mix it with hot water. Having it between bites of gimbap also made the meal feel less dry.

All three had generous fillings in common. Even after some time had passed after takeout, the gimbap held together, and I found the meal filling. It felt like a good option when I wanted to take away a simple breakfast on the way to work, lunch, or a meal before heading home in Sangam.
