## In short

Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch is a Korean restaurant at the entrance to the Bomun tourist district in Gyeongju, close to Donggung Park. Four of us — my parents up from Busan, my husband and me — arrived right at the 11am opening and ordered Ppyeoberest (Gyeongju minari beef rib hot pot), Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties) and yukhoe mulhoe (raw beef in chilled broth), and the broth was rich enough that we kept asking for refills. With ample parking, baby chairs and group seating, Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch worked well for a family meal.

## Why we chose Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch for a meal with my parents

Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch is a Korean restaurant near the entrance to Gyeongju's Bomun tourist district, close to Donggung Park. This Gyeongju trip was a little special. After a one-night, two-day trip with my husband, my parents came over from Busan for the weekend so we could all eat together and play golf!

Instead of just hopping between tourist spots and eating whatever's trendy with the young crowd, I wanted somewhere healthy but new and clean, somewhere my parents would enjoy too. Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch was right at the entrance to Bomun and close to Donggung Park, so it was easy to stop by during the trip, and I'd heard the parking, baby chair, and group seating made it hassle-free — perfect for a Gyeongju family meal.

## Arriving at the 11am opening: a wait at Hyoeunok by 11:30

Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch opens at 11am, and even though we timed it to the opening, a waiting line had formed by around 11:30. With group seating and baby chairs available, there were a lot of family groups.

We'd been looking for something the whole family could eat that wasn't too intense but still felt clean, healthy, and a bit new — and it turns out there's a restaurant that fits exactly that description!! In the end, after visiting Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch, my parents, my husband, and I were all completely satisfied.

Hyoeunok's menu ranges from beef rib hot pot to gomtang, tteokgalbi, and yukhoe mulhoe, with options kids can eat too, so it works for any age group — which is probably why so many families were there. It may have been extra busy because it was a weekend, but I'd say it's worth treating it like an early lunch and arriving right at 11am opening.

## The Hyoeunok menu: what comes with the Ppyeoberest hot pot

Hyoeunok's signature dish is Ppyeoberest, or Gyeongju minari beef rib hot pot. The nickname 'Ppyeoberest' (a play on 'bone' and 'Everest') comes from the way the beef rib bones are stacked up like a mountain.

Order one Gyeongju minari beef rib hot pot and you get everything: beef rib meat + minari (water celery), mushrooms, mixed vegetables + shabu-shabu beef + kalguksu noodles + gondre porridge — enough for a family of 2–4 to eat plenty. On top of that we also ordered the Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi and the yukhoe mulhoe.

## One Ppyeoberest hot pot for a family of four

The dish I was most looking forward to that day was, without question, the Ppyeoberest — the Gyeongju minari beef rib hot pot. The name alone is funny, but once the food actually arrives, you understand exactly why it's called that, haha. Whoever named it, nailed it.

![Hyoeunok's Ppyeoberest beef rib hot pot stacked like a mountain](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyeongju-bomun-hyoeunok-family-lunch/gyeongju-bomun-hyoeunok-family-lunch-10-1o19o-900.webp)

The beef bones and ribs come piled up like a mountain, and the moment it lands on the table, the visual alone grabs your attention. But it's not just a pretty face — the taste was seriously insane. The broth was so good my parents kept asking for refills.

With the Ppyeoberest Gyeongju minari beef rib hot pot, you start by eating the beef rib meat, then work through the minari and mixed vegetables along with the shabu-shabu beef, cooking it all like a shabu-shabu. Then kalguksu noodles and gondre rice come out so you can finish with noodles and porridge.

## Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi: the easiest dish to share with a child

I ordered the Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi (grilled minced beef patties shaped like the Cheomseongdae observatory) for my mom, who loves tteokgalbi, and it was very satisfying — I'd recommend it to anyone eating in Gyeongju with a child. Cheomseongdae is the first image that comes to mind when you think of Gyeongju!

The tteokgalbi is shaped like Cheomseongdae, so it's fun to look at and tasted great too. It's actually introduced as one of Hyoeunok's signature dishes modeled after Cheomseongdae, and the playful shape made the whole meal feel like part of the Gyeongju trip.

## Yukhoe mulhoe: a cold starter before the hot pot

Hyoeunok's yukhoe mulhoe (raw beef tartare in cold spicy broth) was exactly right as a way to open up our appetite before the beef rib hot pot. My husband suggested we order it, and it turned out to be a real find.

It's a cool, sweet-and-tangy broth served with hanwoo (Korean beef) yukhoe and minari — a combination that really worked! The sweet-tangy flavor stirred up our appetite, and it was perfect for the hot summer sun and strong autumn light.

## How to eat Ppyeoberest in order, and how the broth tastes

Once the broth starts to boil, the staff at Hyoeunok press down on the beef rib meat with a ladle and tongs to spread it out. Even though the beef ribs come already cooked, it feels more like warming them through a bit more.

As it keeps boiling, they pull out the vegetables layered underneath and add them to the top. Once the vegetables are cooked, you can scoop up the beef ribs and vegetables together, dip them in the sauce, or just eat them plain — both are good.

The beef rib meat was really tender, almost melting in my mouth. With all the vegetables and minari mixed in, every big bite of vegetables came with a nice aroma.

The broth at this local Gyeongju favorite, Hyoeunok, was absolutely incredible. It genuinely tasted like it had been simmered for a long time — deep and rich — and we kept refilling the broth. After finishing the vegetables and beef ribs, we added the shabu-shabu beef, then cooked up the kalguksu noodles and porridge to finish. I honestly thought I was going to burst. It was so delicious, so generous, so tidy, and just plain fun.

## What made Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch good for a family meal

Hyoeunok is located in Bomun, so parking was ample and easy, and it was much less chaotic than Hwangnidan-gil. With group seating and baby chairs in place, it seemed well set up for family visits — and in fact, most other guests the day I visited were families too.

When you're looking for restaurants in Gyeongju, the touristy spots are nice, but sometimes you just want somewhere the family can eat comfortably. If you're traveling with your parents or with kids, I'd say make sure to put this on the menu at least once during your stay in Gyeongju :)

There are dishes like the Ppyeoberest that are great for sharing among several people, plus dishes like Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi or yukhoe mulhoe you can add depending on taste — so the more family members, the better. Beyond the unique visuals, the generous portions, and the rich broth, the interior is also quite distinctive. This isn't a place that only cares about looking fancy or plating things nicely — it's a genuinely delicious local Gyeongju restaurant that also happens to look great and have a great interior!

If I come back to Gyeongju, this is definitely a place I'll stop by again! Give Hyoeunok, this Gyeongju Korean restaurant, a try :)
