## In short

Padong is a fusion Japanese restaurant on the basement level of an alley building by Mangwon Market in Mapo, Seoul, a five-minute walk from Mangwon Station Exit 2. Three of us ordered four dishes — futomaki, tuna rice bowl, kimchi cheese nabe and chicken karaage — to balance rice, hot broth and something fried. The futomaki with the spicy kimchi cheese nabe was the best pairing, and Padong feels easy enough for a small gathering or a solo meal.

I visited Padong, a fusion Japanese dining spot tucked into an alley in Mangwon-dong. It's known for its futomaki and clean rice bowls, so I went in with high expectations.

## Where Padong is, its hours and where to park

Padong is located at 47 World Cup-ro 17-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, on the basement level. It's about a 5-minute walk from Mangwon Station (Line 6) Exit 2, toward Mangwon Market.

- Hours: 11:30–21:00 (break time 15:00–17:00)
- Parking note: given the nature of the market alley, there's no dedicated lot for the restaurant.
- If you're driving, it's much easier to use the nearby Mangwon 1-dong Community Center public lot or the Mangwon Market public lot.

## Inside Padong's basement dining room

Step just slightly off the busy, bustling Mangwon Market alley, carefully make your way down three or four steps, and a calm, warm wood-toned space unfolds — a completely different atmosphere from the noise outside.

Inside, tables for 2–3 people are arranged neatly and efficiently. The soft overall lighting gives it the cozy comfort of a late-night diner. It's a relaxed atmosphere that works well for a small get-together with friends, a date, or just quietly eating alone.

## Four dishes ordered by three people at Padong

This Mangwon spot specializes in generously filled futomaki (rolled sushi), savory soba, and fresh rice bowls. We came as a group of three, and after carefully looking over the menu, we placed our order to try a good spread of flavors.

Balancing rice, broth, and crispy sides, we picked four dishes: futomaki, tuna rice bowl, kimchi cheese nabe, and finally chicken karaage. The food arrived beautifully plated, satisfying even before the first bite.

### 1. Futomaki (thick sushi roll)

![A plate of Padong's futomaki packed with filling](https://img.superchart.com/images/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people-07-vg2ev-966.webp)

This is Padong's signature dish. The moment it arrived, its hefty, generous look grabbed our attention immediately. The rice was kept thin and minimal, and the extra space was packed full with fresh raw salmon, red tuna, still-warm crispy fried shrimp, sweet and fluffy grilled egg, and fragrant vegetables.

Taking a careful, full bite, the savory crunch of the fried batter and the chewy texture of the sashimi came together beautifully. Each ingredient's flavor stayed distinct, so we enjoyed it happily down to the last piece without getting tired of it.

### 2. Tuna rice bowl

![Tuna rice bowl topped with flying fish roe and egg yolk](https://img.superchart.com/images/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people-09-1wbsz-966.webp)

![A bite of aged tuna rice bowl wrapped in seaweed](https://img.superchart.com/images/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people-10-cjnh8-966.webp)

This tuna rice bowl features softly aged, pink tuna with no fishy smell, laid over the rice. On top of the thick tuna sits a generous topping of popping flying fish roe, crunchy pickled radish, and smooth egg yolk, giving it a rich variety of textures.

Placing a piece of aged tuna and a bit of sharp fresh wasabi over the lightly vinegared rice, then wrapping it carefully in crisp seaweed, lets you fully enjoy a clean, mild flavor. It's a dish clean enough to enjoy comfortably even if you're sensitive to fishy taste.

### 3. Kimchi cheese nabe (hot pot)

![Kimchi cheese nabe topped generously with cheese](https://img.superchart.com/images/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people-11-k0o29-966.webp)

Savory cheese is piled generously on top of a spicy-sweet kimchi broth. Fishing out the crispy-yet-soaked fried shrimp and sipping the spicy broth naturally makes you crave rice. It played a real role in balancing out the whole meal.

### 4. Chicken karaage

![A plate of crispy fried chicken karaage](https://img.superchart.com/images/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people-13-18lzr-966.webp)

![Cross-section of well-seasoned karaage](https://img.superchart.com/images/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people/padong-mangwon-japanese-four-dishes-three-people-14-k6izh-966.webp)

A great fried chicken side. Crispy outside, juicy and tender inside. It's well-seasoned with a salty edge, making it perfect alongside beer or a highball.

## Is Padong worth a visit?

With its variety of ingredients, tidy plating, and cozy mood, this was a place where the futomaki and spicy kimchi cheese nabe combination especially stood out.

If you're looking for a comfortable, small-scale Japanese meal in Mangwon-dong, it's worth a visit.
