On a trip to Daegu, I stopped by Izakaya Wakoan in Beomeo-dong, Suseong-gu, for dinner and a drink. While looking around for somewhere to go, I found this izakaya with real Japanese local vibes and a huge variety of tasty side dishes! Since they open early in the evening, I went for a first-round visit ☺️

## Where is Izakaya Wakoan Suseong Beomeo Branch, and what does the name mean?

Wakoan in Beomeo-dong, Daegu, apparently means something like a harmonious, peaceful, comfortable home that brings happiness. It's right next to the KBS station and across from Daegu Bank, so it wasn't hard to find.

## Inside Wakoan: seating, partitions and the group room for 14

Walking in, the calm, quiet atmosphere really felt like a real izakaya in Japan, with partitioned tables, window seats, and a group room that fits up to 14 — good for gatherings, work dinners, or a date night with friends or a partner 😌

Partitions separated the space so it felt private, and there was a wide range of dishes suited for an early dinner as well as lighter second-round menus for later at night, making Wakoan an easy place to drop into either way.

Further inside, the kitchen was partly open so you could see the cooking happening, with tables set up right beside it. I liked the vibe right away and started getting excited!

## What we ordered at Wakoan and what it cost

At Wakoan Suseong Beomeo Branch we ordered the clam sool-jjim for ₩25,000, added noodles for ₩3,000, and homemade ankimo gim-bugak for ₩10,000. Since we had a second round planned, we kept it simple.

There were so many menu options I had a hard time deciding — chef's recommendations, sashimi, steak, tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties), grilled chicken, plus meal options, and separate sections for seafood, hot pot, and nabe dishes meant more for drinking. They also mentioned an upcoming lunch and dinner special — a collaboration sushi menu with Jean Sushi — so sushi lovers might want to check that out too ☺️

### Draft Ebisu beer at Wakoan

The drink lineup was extensive too — highball, draft beer, soju, cheongha, Ilpum Jinro, and more, so there's plenty to suit any taste. We went with a draft Ebisu 🍺

![A glass of draft Ebisu beer with foam on top](https://img.superchart.com/images/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo-12-tm64g-966.webp)

That soft, smooth foam on the Ebisu draft was excellent! We'd parked at my sister's place and walked over, so it was pretty warm out — that cold beer really hit the spot haha

![Basic side dish of potato salad with a small cookie](https://img.superchart.com/images/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo-14-v9cfq-m-966.webp)

### The complimentary starter: potato salad

This came out as a complimentary starter. The potato salad comes with a small cookie on the side — why is this so good? Bite-sized and a little salty, it went perfectly with the beer.

![A pot of Wakoan's clam sool-jjim](https://img.superchart.com/images/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo-15-8b989-1200.webp)

## How was the clam sool-jjim with extra noodles?

The visuals were amazing! Our order took about 10 minutes to arrive — really fast — and the savory, slightly spicy smell of the clam sool-jjim already smelled delicious.

![Sool-jjim full of plump clams](https://img.superchart.com/images/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo-16-1nsgr-966.webp)

The clams were generously loaded and plump. The broth had just a hint of spice, which paired nicely with the beer.

It was simmered cleanly with plenty of large clams, garlic, and cheongyang chili. The clean, savory broth from the clams, brightened with a subtle kick of spice, kept pulling my spoon back in.

![Noodles added into the clam sool-jjim](https://img.superchart.com/images/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo-18-1vk73-966.webp)

With the added noodles mixed in, it was fun to first pick through the clams, then twirl the noodles in that rich, savory broth afterward. Anyone who loves seafood would definitely enjoy this dish.

## Ankimo with homemade gim-bugak: how the pairing tastes

Right after that came the ankimo homemade gim-bugak! The crispy, savory crunch of the gim-bugak (crispy seaweed chip) paired with the smooth, rich flavor of the ankimo (monkfish liver) made for a fun contrast in texture and taste.

![A plate of ankimo homemade gim-bugak](https://img.superchart.com/images/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo-20-1g6g1-966.webp)

![Gim-bugak and ankimo cut into bite-sized pieces](https://img.superchart.com/images/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo-21-13875-966.webp)

The gim-bugak seemed freshly fried — really light and crispy. There was a decent amount too, filling enough on its own, and it was cut into easy bite-size pieces, making it simple to top with ankimo.

![A bite of gim-bugak topped with ankimo](https://img.superchart.com/images/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo/wakoan-beomeo-clam-sake-steam-ankimo-22-ekd8o-966.webp)

What I liked most was how the crispy gim-bugak lightened the richness of the ankimo, and the portion was bigger than expected, so we ended up satisfyingly full. Both dishes paired perfectly with the cold beer! If you're looking for an izakaya with great food in Beomeo-dong, Daegu, give Wakoan a try ☺️
