## In short

Matdongsam Beomeo Main Branch is a pork BBQ restaurant in a renovated house on Dongdaegu-ro 74an-gil in Beomeo-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu. One serving of special ogyeopsal (thick pork belly) and two servings of jjondeuksal were grilled with stir-fried kimchi, potatoes and mushrooms, then the meal finished with steamed egg, grandma's doenjang stew and rice. At Matdongsam, the grilled kimchi and garlic oil sauce lingered longer than the pork itself.

A pork BBQ restaurant worth trying in Beomeo-dong: Matdongsam

While looking for somewhere to eat pork in Daegu, I came across a new pork BBQ restaurant in Beomeo-dong on social media and wanted to try it. I used to think good pork was all that mattered, but this place turned out to have a lot more fun in the details than expected — from the grilled kimchi to the dipping sauces and vegetables.

## Where is Matdongsam Beomeo Main Branch, and what are its hours?

Matdongsam is a pork BBQ restaurant at 15 Dongdaegu-ro 74an-gil, Suseong-gu, Daegu. It's open daily from 17:00 to 23:00, and closed on the day of Korean holidays.

## Is there parking at Matdongsam?

There's a parking area right in front of the restaurant. But given the size of the place, the parking space isn't exactly generous — maybe room for about 2 cars — so anything beyond that means using another lot or the nearby alleys. Especially during dinner hours, when diners tend to pile in, it's worth thinking about public transit or a nearby lot rather than counting on parking.

## Inside Matdongsam: a main house and a separate annex

![Interior of Matdongsam split into a main building and annex](https://img.superchart.com/images/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner-03-7l7q0-m-966.webp)

The inside of Matdongsam was bigger and more unusual than I expected. Rather than one continuous dining room, the space is split into a main building and an annex, with tables scattered throughout — a bit different from a typical pork BBQ restaurant.

![Renovated-house interior atmosphere at Matdongsam](https://img.superchart.com/images/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner-04-137od-966.webp)

There's also a renovated-house kind of atmosphere, so instead of feeling like a spotless franchise BBQ joint, it felt more like eating pork comfortably in the neighborhood. With tables split across several spaces, it seemed like a good spot not just for two people but for family dinners or group gatherings too.

And if you search Matdongsam on Naver, there were a bunch of fun coupons — definitely worth checking before you visit haha 🤭

## Ordering one special ogyeopsal and two jjondeuksal

![Special pork belly and jjondeuksal ordered at Matdongsam](https://img.superchart.com/images/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner-05-mf4sh-966.webp)

What we ordered that day: one serving of special ogyeopsal (pork belly) and two servings of jjondeuksal. Since Matdongsam requires a minimum of 3 servings for the first order, we picked what we wanted from the various cuts.

![Basic side dish setup after ordering meat](https://img.superchart.com/images/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner-06-1kc32-m-966.webp)

After ordering the meat, the basic setup arrives first, and it was better than expected. I especially liked that mushrooms and potatoes came out alongside the meat, ready to grill on the same pan.

Instead of just grilling meat nonstop, tossing in grilled mushrooms or potatoes here and there changes up the texture, and with a bit of the meat's fat soaked in, they become a treat of their own too 😛

## Stir-fried kimchi grilled right on the pan

What was pretty striking at Matdongsam was the kimchi. Instead of the usual fresh kimchi you get at most pork BBQ restaurants, they bring out already well-fermented braised kimchi. I personally love this kind of deeply fermented kimchi, and the moment I saw it I thought it would make an amazing kimchi stew — but it was also delicious grilled. With a little pork fat soaked in, the kimchi's deep flavor came through even more, making it an addictive combination I kept reaching for.

## Barley doenjang, egg roe sauce and garlic oil: the dipping sauces at Matdongsam

There was a good variety of dipping sauces to go with the meat too. Barley doenjang, blue-shell egg roe sauce, wasabi, and salt were all set out, so you could pick based on your taste — and the same meat tastes a little different depending on which sauce you dip it in, so it's fun to try different combinations. The barley doenjang paired especially well with the pork, and the salt was good when I wanted something cleaner.

And there was one slightly unusual sauce — garlic oil sauce. I assumed it was salted anchovy sauce at first, but the staff explained it was garlic oil sauce, and that once it comes to a boil, you should pour it into a paper cup and dip your meat in it. I did as instructed, boiled it, and dipped my meat in — the garlic aroma came through subtly with a rich savoriness, and I kept coming back for more.

## How did the special ogyeopsal and jjondeuksal taste?

On to the main event — the meat 🍖 First up was the special ogyeopsal, and the signature chewy texture of pork belly really came through. Since this cut includes lean meat, fat and skin together, it had a satisfying bite and a nice nuttiness too.

![Cross-section of grilled special pork belly](https://img.superchart.com/images/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner-16-gvotl-966.webp)

Personally, dipping the pork belly lightly in salt was my favorite way to taste the meat's own flavor fully. And pairing it with barley doenjang or the egg roe sauce gave it a bit more depth.

![A piece of pork belly dipped in sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner-18-15skt-966.webp)

![Jjondeuksal on the grill pan](https://img.superchart.com/images/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner/matdongsam-beomeo-grilled-kimchi-dinner-19-qpn7v-966.webp)

The jjondeuksal ("chewy cut") lived up to its name — the texture was the whole point. If you prefer a springy, chewy bite over something soft and melt-in-your-mouth, this one's for you, and switching between it and the special pork belly made for a pretty fun contrast of textures???? With grilled potatoes, mushrooms and kimchi alongside the meat, the whole table felt satisfyingly full.

## Finishing with steamed egg, grandma's doenjang stew and rice

After all the meat, a combo you can't skip — I ordered steamed egg, doenjang stew and rice too. The doenjang stew had a rich, savory anchovy broth flavor, and after grilling meat continuously, having a warm spoonful of stew felt like resetting my palate, making for a nice finish with rice. The steamed egg was also great to eat softly in between bites of meat — glad I ordered it.

After the meal, candy is served as dessert. I missed the Naver event and didn't get the ice cream, but I still got a sweet finish to the dinner with the candy 🍭

If you're looking for a new pork BBQ restaurant to try in Beomeo-dong, Matdongsam seems like a good pick for a family dinner or a gathering — how about having dinner there sometime?
