## In short

Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo is a kkomjangeo (hagfish) grill house on Choryang-ro in Dong-gu, Busan, run by the same family for three generations since 1963. On a Busan trip I walked over to the Choryang hagfish street, ordered the medium salt-grilled hagfish (55,000 won) with a non-alcoholic beer, and finished the leftover sauce with fried rice (2,500 won). For travellers who want a Busan local dish beyond pork soup rice and milmyeon, Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo was a great choice.

Whenever I travel to Busan, I usually end up hunting down the famous dishes like pork rib soup or milmyeon, but this time I really wanted to properly try hagfish (kkomjangeo), something I don't eat that often! While looking up good hagfish restaurants in Busan, I found out there's a whole cluster of hagfish places around Choryang?! So I made a reservation at Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo near Busan Station and went to check it out.

It's been run by the same family for three generations since 1963, and once I got there, I could really feel that old-school, time-worn atmosphere +_+ It's known as a spot that celebrities visit often too, so if you're looking for a great hagfish restaurant in Busan, I'd recommend this place. I'd always meant to try it but never got around to it — this was my first time, and I left having eaten really well!

## Where Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo is and how to book

📍Address: 25 Choryang-ro, Dong-gu, Busan, South Korea. If you're coming by subway, it's a quick walk from Exit 1 of Choryang Station, and it's also within reach from Busan Station, which made it convenient to visit during our trip. Since we were already moving around near the station, it was nice not having to go too far out of the way.

As we walked into the Choryang area, hagfish restaurants started popping up one after another, and I realized — this must be the Busan hagfish street everyone talks about. Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo takes reservations, offers takeout, and can accommodate groups, so if you're visiting with a larger party or on a weekend, it might be worth booking ahead through Naver Reservation!

## Inside a Busan hagfish house open since 1963

Knowing this place has been around since 1963, I could feel that cozy, nostalgic atmosphere unique to old Busan restaurants inside, and honestly, that vibe made it feel even more like I was really in Busan! Sitting down at a place with this much history to eat hagfish definitely gave me that proper travel feeling >.<

Looking around from our table, even though it was still early evening, there were quite a few customers there for hagfish, and plenty of them seemed to be friends or couples enjoying a meal with a drink. It struck me as the kind of place you'd want to visit in the evening during a Busan trip if you really want to enjoy a great hagfish restaurant.

## Hagfish sizes, prices and menu at Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo

The signature dishes at Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo are, as expected, salt-grilled and sauce-grilled hagfish. Hagfish comes in Small ₩45,000 / Medium ₩55,000 / Large ₩65,000 / X-Large ₩75,000, and there's also a half-and-half option so you can have both salt and sauce.

On top of that, fried rice is ₩2,500, which made it easy to round off the meal after finishing the hagfish. For two people, the medium size was just right — for a bigger group, you could just scale up depending on the number of people.

## How the salt-grilled hagfish tasted

When our order finally came out, the look of it was already very different from what I'd had before. The first thing I noticed was that it was far chewier and crunchier than I expected *_*

![Close-up of chewy salt-grilled hagfish](https://img.superchart.com/images/choryang-gopchang-eel-salt-grill-gyeongbuksan/choryang-gopchang-eel-salt-grill-gyeongbuksan-09-eqi1g-900.webp)

The salt-grilled version we ordered really let the natural savory flavor of the hagfish come through, and dipping it lightly in sesame oil sauce made it taste clean yet increasingly savory with every bite. It was the perfect drinking snack — we couldn't drink alcohol that day, so we had it with a non-alcoholic beer instead, and it was so good!! I really love it when restaurants sell non-alcoholic beer 👍

In the past, when I ate other foods in Busan, I mostly went to places popular with tourists — but this time, seeking out an old-school restaurant on Busan's hagfish street gave the whole trip a different kind of feeling. It wasn't just about eating something delicious; it felt like experiencing local food and atmosphere that you can only really get in Busan!

### Finishing with fried rice for 2,500 won

At the end, of course, we couldn't skip the fried rice. Fried in the leftover sauce from the hagfish, it tasted so much better than plain rice — even after eating a fair amount of hagfish already, my spoon kept going back for more right until the end.

## Is Choryang hagfish street worth a stop on a Busan trip?

If you're traveling in Busan and want to try something a bit different from pork rib soup or milmyeon, Gyeongbuksan Kkomjangeo seems like a solid choice for one of the best hagfish restaurants in Busan. It's especially convenient to reach from Busan Station and Choryang Station, and you also get to experience the distinctive old-school atmosphere of the Choryang hagfish street, which made it a great fit for a Busan trip itinerary. The texture and flavor of the hagfish were better than I expected, so it's a place I'd love to come back to next time I'm in Busan 🤍
