## In short

Jeju Badang is a Korean restaurant on the second floor of a dining alley on Seohyeonnam-ro in Gagyeong-dong, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju, serving grilled fish, braised fish and pot rice. On a weekday evening one portion of the atka mackerel (imyeonsu) set and one portion of braised mackerel were ordered separately, so grilled and braised fish could be shared, with self-serve bar side dishes plus seaweed soup and spicy pork stir-fry filling out the table. Because Jeju Badang takes single-portion orders, it is the right choice when you cannot decide between grilled and braised fish.

Lastly, let me show you the sourcing info! There's a reason it's called Jeju Badang (Jeju Sea)...! The hairtail, tilefish, and even the conch come from Jeju, and beyond that, the pork, cabbage, and rice are all domestically sourced, so you can eat with peace of mind! These days it's rare to find a place with such reliable sourcing across the board!!

## Jeju Badang side dishes and the self-serve bar with chicken

Here's the self-serve bar at Jeju Badang, the popular Gyeongdong, Cheongju restaurant. Along with the basic side dishes, you can also help yourself to a variety of extra dishes at the self-serve bar! There's a wide range of Korean side dishes prepared, from seasoned bean sprouts and kimchi to various namul (seasoned vegetables) and lettuce wraps.

![Jeju Badang's self-serve bar with namul and lettuce wraps](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel-12-1vkby-900.webp)

There was even japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), so it was fun picking a little bit of this and that before the fish even arrived! And I was so surprised to find chicken there too, of all things?! It's wild to find fried chicken at the self-serve bar of a grilled fish restaurant, but eaten with the sauce it's crispy and delicious...! It's the reason my dieting friend fell off the wagon.

![A plate of japchae and chicken from the self-serve bar](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel-13-1tnyl-900.webp)

Next up, the basic side dishes at Jeju Badang. Mushrooms, namul, radish salad, cucumber salad, and more come standard, and you can top up anything missing from the self-serve bar.

And here's the amazing part—spicy pork stir-fry comes out too. You get seaweed soup and spicy pork stir-fry!! I love spicy pork stir-fry so much!!!

![Jeju Badang's basic side dishes with spicy pork stir-fry and seaweed soup](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel-14-15vqv-900.webp)

How can they even give you spicy pork stir-fry too... and it's refillable too! A restaurant that men are bound to love—the pork stir-fry is tasty, but the seaweed soup is great too!! I really hadn't gushed this much over a meal in a while.

And there's coffee too! Honestly, parents would be so happy here—there's even plum tea next to it, so you can enjoy the full course.

## Ordering the atka mackerel set and braised mackerel, one portion each

![Table set with both the atkarine set and mackerel stew](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel-17-vl4lx-900.webp)

We ordered two things that day! One portion of the atkarine set and one portion of mackerel stew. Being able to order single portions is great!!

![Jeju Badang's mackerel stew served with pot rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel-18-wfwan-1200.webp)

The mackerel stew also comes with pot rice, so it was nice to be able to pick one grilled fish dish and one stew and split them between us! For anyone who loves both grilled and stewed fish and can't decide, this is perfect ❤️

![Table with one grilled dish and one stew ordered at Jeju Badang](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel-19-9ee3h-900.webp)

First up, the atkarine set! A generously grilled, golden-brown half atkarine (rock trout) comes on top, served as a full spread together with pot rice.

![Golden-brown grilled half atkarine](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel-20-p80yp-900.webp)

Atkarine has that distinctive clean, savory flavor, so it's a dish even people who don't like strong seasoning would enjoy! The flesh also came off the bone more easily than I expected.

The grilled atkarine had plumper flesh than I expected, which was nice. Grilled fish can easily end up too dry or too salty, but here the outside was crispy while the inside stayed moist, making it great to eat with rice.

Especially with a piece of atkarine flesh placed on warm rice along with a side dish, it really felt like eating a home-cooked meal!

![Atkarine flesh served over warm rice](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel-21-1boyw-900.webp)

And the mackerel stew had a completely different charm. The chunky mackerel was well soaked in a thick sauce, which went great with rice—total rice thief vibes! The mackerel flesh was also easy to pick apart.

![Chunky mackerel stew soaked in a thick sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel-22-oyjqr-900.webp)

It wasn't too aggressively spicy, just the right amount of sauce, which made it delicious! Picking apart the mackerel flesh and mixing the sauce lightly into rice was another delicacy in itself.

![Rice mixed with mackerel stew sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel/jeju-badang-cheongju-imyeonsu-mackerel-23-7p64u-900.webp)

On top of that, with the side dishes from the self-serve bar plus the seaweed soup and spicy pork stir-fry that came with the meal, the whole spread felt really generous. I especially felt that being able to pick a little bit of many different side dishes was one of Jeju Badang's strengths.

## Nearly full even on a weekday evening

Now I understand why it's known as a great Korean restaurant in Cheongju...! We visited on a weekday evening, and by the time we left it was almost fully booked—so I guess there really is a reason popular places are popular. That's Jeju Badang, the Korean restaurant in Gyeongdong, Cheongju!

The grilled and stewed fish were genuinely delicious, and with the self-serve side dishes on top, there was nothing lacking. Highly recommend Jeju Badang in Cheongju—I'd love to go back!!
