## In short

Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong is a dakgangjeong (sweet crispy Korean fried chicken) takeaway shop in Danyang, Chungbuk. We tried its ₩20,000 original black garlic nurungji chicken with a ₩10,000 two-bottle black garlic makgeolli set alongside sashimi, and the saucy chicken stayed crisp while nurungji added a lovely textural change. A very easy market pickup for a Danyang trip.

That saying that you have to pick up at least one box of dakgangjeong when you visit Danyang Gugyeong Market? It really isn’t just something people say.

![Dakgangjeong market food at Danyang Gugyeong Market](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-01-zsvju-900.webp)

We had already decided to have sashimi for dinner, so while looking around the market for a side that would go well with it, we naturally found ourselves heading toward the dakgangjeong. But this chicken was a little different from ordinary dakgangjeong: even though it was generously coated in sauce, the crisp texture stayed alive until the end. I was honestly wondering what the secret was.

It was Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong (단양흑마늘누룽지닭강정), right in Danyang Gugyeong Market :) If you are looking for market food on a Danyang trip, it may be a place you have heard of at least once. Here is my visit review.

## Why we chose dakgangjeong at Danyang Gugyeong Market

We were taking our time wandering around Danyang Gugyeong Market that day. There is such fun in looking at this and that and choosing snacks one by one when you come to a market, right? Danyang has so many foods made with garlic, so we were wondering what to try. Since we planned to have sashimi for dinner, we were looking for something not too heavy that we could share.

![Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong shop information](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-03-5f4cg-900.webp)
*Featured on many TV programs, too!!!*

Then dakgangjeong caught our eye! We were like, if you come to a market, dakgangjeong is basically a rule, haha. So we decided to get a takeaway box from Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong.

Once we got there, though, it was more unusual than the simple chicken shop I had expected, starting with the name. Black garlic + dakgangjeong + nurungji (crispy scorched rice)! At first I honestly wondered, “Would nurungji really go with dakgangjeong?” But to give away the conclusion, the nurungji turned out to be the most fun part of this chicken.

## Basic details and waiting before the visit

The address is 31-1 Dojeon 4-gil, Danyang-eup, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, and it is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00, with last orders at 19:30. Visitor reviews say there can be a wait during busy ordering periods and that the shop may close early if ingredients sell out, so I recommend visiting with time to spare rather than too late. One review even said it took around 40–50 minutes from ordering to pickup!

I visited around 2 p.m. on a Saturday and think I waited about 10 minutes. There were really a lot of people, but turnover was so fast that I did not wait that long.

### Signature menu

## Can you taste the original and double flavors before choosing?

There was one thing here that I really liked.

![Samples of original and double-flavor dakgangjeong](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-05-1h57p-900.webp)

They had samples set up right in front of the shop! You could compare the black garlic original and black garlic double flavors.

It is hard to pick a dakgangjeong flavor from a photo alone, isn’t it? With black garlic especially, you might wonder, “Won’t the garlic aroma be really strong?” or “Will the sweet black garlic flavor be overwhelming?” Being able to taste them first made it much easier. I also thought it was nice that they had wooden chopsticks rather than little sampling toothpicks. It is a small thing, but details like that quietly make you feel good.

It did not feel like they wanted you to have just one or two pieces and be done; it felt like they wanted you to try it comfortably. So we casually tasted the original and double flavors one after the other. Comparing them directly made the difference very clear. After thinking it over, we chose the black garlic original!

The double flavor would be good if you want a more intense black garlic note, but if, like us, you want to comfortably enjoy the overall combination of sweetly seasoned chicken, nurungji, and black garlic, starting with the original seems like a good idea. Other visitor reviews also described the original as having a relatively gentle black garlic flavor, while the double flavor made its black garlic presence more definite.

## Why it was fine to buy before looking around the market

There was also a phrase I noticed on the packaging.

![Dakgangjeong package notice saying it tastes good after cooling](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-06-1e8e6-900.webp)

The chicken box said, in effect, that it tastes even better after it cools down. I liked that much more than I expected, haha.

Because when you buy market food, you often have this little dilemma. You want to buy it now, but foods that lose their flavor over time, get soggy when cold, or are difficult to carry around have to be saved for last after you finish the market. This dakgangjeong, though, is meant to be enjoyed even after it cools, so it put my mind at ease.

![Packaged nurungji dakgangjeong before exploring the market](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-07-ah5fk-1200.webp)

Buy the dakgangjeong as soon as you enter the market → browse other foods → buy what you need → head to your accommodation or dinner spot! Planning your route like this felt much less burdensome. Visitor reviews repeatedly said it was tasty even when cold, and I also saw people who ordered first, looked around the market, and picked it up at the time they wanted!

## How the Black Garlic Original Nurungji Dakgangjeong tasted

We chose the Black Garlic Original Nurungji Dakgangjeong, priced at ₩20,000.

![Packaged black garlic original nurungji dakgangjeong](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-08-pk5r9-900.webp)

When we opened the box, there were large pieces of chicken evenly coated in a rich sauce, topped with crisp nurungji and black garlic. The chicken pieces were quite large, so it was easier to pick one up with chopsticks and eat it in smaller bites rather than put it all in your mouth at once.

The first thing I noticed on eating it was the pairing of sauce and fried coating. With dakgangjeong, lots of sweet sauce can often make the batter soggy. Here, though, the sauce was quite generous and there was still a crisp feeling when I bit in. I kept thinking, “Huh? Why is it still crispy with this much sauce?” haha. The coating and sauce did not feel separate, either; instead of the seasoning sliding around on the surface, it felt like it clung neatly to the chicken and coating.

## Why nurungji worked so well with dakgangjeong

At first I was genuinely curious. Why put nurungji in dakgangjeong? But once I tasted it, I understood right away.

![Crispy nurungji eaten with dakgangjeong](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-09-13fr0-900.webp)

If you keep eating only dakgangjeong, the sweet, rich sauce can start to feel a little one-note. Here, there are crisp, nutty bits of nurungji throughout. Take a piece of chicken and crunch the nurungji with it, and it moves through sweet seasoning → chewy chicken → crisp nurungji → nutty, toasted flavor all at once. It did not feel like I was eating the same flavor continuously.

Especially nice was that the nurungji was not just a few decorative pieces on top; the more I ate, the more its nutty flavor came through. Picking up some nurungji between the chicken pieces clearly changed the texture and almost felt like a palate cleanser. Other visitor reviews also noted that the nurungji cuts through the chicken’s sameness and adds nutty flavor and crunch!!!

## The black garlic flavor was not overwhelming

And since we were in Danyang, we could not leave out black garlic.

![Black garlic topping on dakgangjeong](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-10-3yxit-900.webp)

The black garlic original is said to use house-made black garlic as a topping. Because of the name, I worried it might taste very rich and heavy, like concentrated black garlic extract, but it was not overwhelming at all when I tried it.

The chicken itself has a sweet seasoning base, so the distinctive black garlic flavor blended naturally with the sweetness rather than standing out sharply. Its bitter edge or strong aroma did not come too far to the front, so I felt it was a relatively approachable flavor even for someone trying black garlic food for the first time.

## Pairing it with the two-bottle black garlic makgeolli set

And we could not just pass this by, haha. We bought the ₩10,000 two-bottle black garlic makgeolli set to have with the chicken.

![Two-bottle black garlic makgeolli set](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-11-9e9m2-900.webp)

Just hearing “black garlic makgeolli,” you would expect a very strong black garlic aroma, right? At first I worried, “What if it tastes too strongly of garlic?” But when I actually drank it, it was a style that was easier to enjoy than I expected.

![Black garlic makgeolli poured into a beer glass](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-12-1aqgz-900.webp)
*We did not have makgeolli cups, so I poured it into beer glasses, haha.*

The black garlic character was not completely absent, but it was not rich or burdensome like drinking black garlic extract straight. Instead, it had a sweet touch that worked well with the dakgangjeong. After a bite of the chicken’s sweet seasoning, a sip of makgeolli felt like it reset my palate ✨ Then I would eat more crisp, nutty nurungji, and reach for another bite, haha.

This definitely felt like a local-food pairing worth trying on a Danyang trip.

### The shelf life was more generous than expected

The black garlic makgeolli comes as two bottles for ₩10,000, and it had a little over a month left before its expiration date, which gave us more time than I expected.

![Black garlic makgeolli enjoyed as a travel souvenir](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-15-d5780-900.webp)
*Be sure to try them together 😋*

When you buy regional specialties while traveling, sometimes you have to eat them immediately. Having a bit of time like this makes it easier to bring them home instead. If you are looking for black garlic foods as a Danyang travel souvenir, it could be nice to look at this together with the chicken.

## Who I would recommend it to

Based on trying it myself, I think it would be especially good for these people.

![Visitor information around Danyang Gugyeong Market](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-16-kl2kj-900.webp)
*You can also combine your visit with famous restaurants and bakeries!*

- People looking for food at Danyang Gugyeong Market: It is easy to fit into a travel route because you can pack it up while exploring the market.
- People wanting a regional specialty on a Danyang trip: The Danyang black garlic + nurungji combination clearly feels local.
- People looking for a late-night snack at their accommodation: It is ready to eat without extra cooking and easy to take back with you.
- People who quickly tire of sweet dakgangjeong: Eating crisp nurungji in between gives a definite change in texture.
- People curious about black garlic: Being able to taste the original and double flavors before choosing is a real advantage. 👍

## Useful tips before visiting

- If you cannot choose a flavor, start with a sample! You can taste the original and double flavors, so there is no need to choose blindly.
- If you plan to explore the market, it is fine to order first. On days with a wait, you can look around the market and come back for it!
- Try not to go too late. Hours are listed as 10:00–20:00 with last orders at 19:30, but early closing is possible when ingredients sell out, so it is safest to check ahead if this is your last stop of the trip.

## My honest verdict as a side for sashimi

Honestly, I did not go in with huge expectations. We had decided to eat sashimi for dinner, so I bought it thinking it would just be one side dish to have alongside it.

![Danyang dakgangjeong served with nurungji](https://img.superchart.com/images/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing/danyang-nurungji-chicken-makgeolli-pairing-17-ldjhz-900.webp)
*I approve this as life-changing dakgangjeong 👍*

But after trying it, the nurungji went much better with it than I expected. The chicken itself was nicely infused with sweet sauce and the pieces were large, but the crisp nurungji completely changed the texture. What was especially fun was that it still felt crisp even with lots of sauce on it.

If I had to choose just one defining feature of this place, I would mention the nurungji before the black garlic. The black garlic gives it Danyang’s local character, while the nurungji felt like the key texture that distinguishes this dakgangjeong from others. The original flavor was well balanced overall, too: its black garlic note was not overly strong alongside the sweet chicken seasoning and nutty nurungji. I would recommend the double flavor if you want to enjoy black garlic intensely, and the original if it is your first time or if you want to comfortably enjoy the overall harmony.

Adding the black garlic makgeolli completed a pairing that felt like something you could only have on a Danyang trip. Above all, it was convenient that we did not have to eat it immediately after buying it at the market. When traveling, you often find something delicious but pass it by thinking, “If I buy it now, it will be soggy later, right?” This place says it tastes better after cooling, so it felt like an easy option to pick up early in the market visit and carry around.

If you are wondering what to eat at Danyang Gugyeong Market, I think this route works very nicely: Danyang Heukmaneul Nurungji Dakgangjeong → explore the market → eat it with makgeolli at your accommodation or dinner spot. If you want something more memorable than ordinary dakgangjeong—something that makes you think, “I tried this in Danyang”—the black garlic and nurungji combination is definitely fun. It also worked well for us as a side or late-night snack when we already had another main dish planned for dinner. At first I thought, “What kind of combination is dakgangjeong and nurungji?” but after eating it, I thought, “Ah, that is why they put nurungji in it,” haha. If you visit Danyang, take a lap around the market, try the samples, and choose the black garlic flavor that suits your appetite that day :)
