As the weather cooled off, I started craving something hot and refreshing with a good broth. So this time I visited Widaehan Jogae Jeongol in Yongun-dong, Daejeon. It's a place where all sorts of clams and seafood come piled high in a huge steaming pot — a Yongun-dong favorite I'd recommend not just for family dinners but also for work dinners or drinking nights. Here's my detailed review!

## Location and parking on Daehak-ro, in front of Daejeon University

Widaehan Jogae Jeongol sits right on the main road of Daehak-ro, not far from Daejeon University, so it wasn't hard to find. The sign is big too, so even first-time visitors should be able to spot it easily.

Since it's right by Daejeon University, they also serve clam kalguksu (clam noodle soup) sized for a single student meal — and it's only ₩7,500! Great value for students 👌👌 They also have individual seafood tanks, so freshness is guaranteed since the seafood comes straight from there ☺️

There's a parking space behind the building, so it was fairly convenient to visit by car too. It can get busy in the evenings, so I'd recommend going with some time to spare.

## Is it okay to bring kids? The interior and seating

Walking in, the interior was bigger and cleaner than I expected. There were plenty of tables and even seating for larger groups, so it seemed like a good spot for family dinners or gatherings.

With clam hot pot, the pot itself is large and you end up with a lot of shells on the table, so table space matters — and overall there was enough room that we could eat comfortably. They also had a baby chair ready, making it a solid Yongun-dong spot for family dinners with kids.

## The menu, and what we ordered

The signature dish is, as the name suggests, clam hot pot (jogae jeongol). You can choose portions for 2, 3, or 4 people, and there's a range of other seafood dishes too — clam samhap, live octopus, abalone, long arm octopus. They also have a popular clam-and-beef set menu that I definitely want to try next time.

Since we came with our little ones, they made the kalguksu mild and gave us the cheongyang chili peppers separately, so the whole family was happy!

### A drink even if you're driving: non-alcoholic beer

And honestly, the ✨non-alcoholic beer✨ was such a satisfying find. When you drive out with the kids, you usually can't drink even if you want to — so I loved that this Daejeon University-area, Yongun-dong clam kalguksu spot sells non-alcoholic beer. Totally my thing…🍻 My husband and I got to clink glasses together for the first time in a while.

## Side dishes and what shows up while you wait

After ordering, while we waited, they brought out this huge pot along with side dishes. Like a course meal, they also brought fried squid legs and spring rolls. It made the wait for the clam hot pot to cook feel a lot less boring.

The hot pot itself looked about ten times the size of an adult woman's palm — massive, right?

### ₩7,500 clam kalguksu — the kids devoured it

We ordered the clam kalguksu mainly to feed the kids first, and honestly the portion put the ₩7,500 price to shame 💗 Loaded with vegetables and tons of clams. And that chewy noodle texture — I'm still thinking about it haha. The kids ate every bit of it!

## Clam hot pot for two — what's actually in it

Finally, the clam hot pot arrived! Even as a portion for two, it was such a huge amount. They said the dongjuk (Manila clams) weren't at peak freshness that day, so they generously loaded in other kinds of clams instead — which honestly worked out great 💗 Scallops, mussels, littleneck clams, and razor clams, along with abalone, squid, fish cakes and more, all packed into the pot. It's the kind of visual that makes you understand why the word 'widaehan' (great/mighty) is in the name.

The staff let us know the best time to start eating and even prepped the seafood piece by piece, so it was easy to eat without any hassle.

Since we had the kids with us, we asked for the cheongyang chili peppers on the side — and adding them in partway through, wow… 👌👌 that practically demands a shot of soju.

### The real kicker: cheese clay pot

Pulling out the well-cooked clams one by one, the clam meat was plump and chewy. With so many varieties, there's fun in picking and choosing, and dipping them lightly in soy sauce or vinegar-chili sauce really brought out that clean, savory clam flavor.

But the real kicker was the cheese clay pot 👏👏 — sweet, savory, and I just couldn't stop eating it. Wrapping a clam in that stretchy melted cheese was next-level delicious.

## The broth, and finishing with kalguksu noodles

What I liked most about Widaehan Jogae Jeongol was the broth. At first it tastes clean and refreshing, and as the various clams and seafood cook, the broth deepens more and more. With the cheongyang chili giving it a subtle kick and the clams' savory richness coming through, it's the kind of flavor that keeps your spoon moving. It pairs well with drinks, but the warming broth also made for a satisfying meal on its own.

And of course, the finale — kalguksu noodles! After eating our fill of clams and seafood, we finished by adding noodles to the pot. Cooking kalguksu noodles in a broth so richly infused with clam umami is a combination that can't miss. The noodles soaked up the refreshing broth so well that even after being full, I kept reaching for more. The kimchi that came with it paired nicely with the noodles too, so we enjoyed the meal right to the very end. If you visit Widaehan Jogae Jeongol, definitely add the kalguksu noodles.
