## In short

Gyodong Jjamppong Yongjeong Branch is a neighborhood Chinese restaurant tucked into an alley near Yeongun Stream in Yongjeong-dong, Sangdang-gu, Cheongju. On a trip through Cheongju, we came for a hangover lunch at Sunday peak time and ordered jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) for 9,000 won, spicy ulzzajang (thick-sauce black bean noodles) for 7,000 won and eight pieces of menbosha (deep-fried shrimp toast) for 14,000 won, with almost every table taken. The smoky jjamppong and the sweet-spicy ulzzajang both worked as a hangover meal at Gyodong Jjamppong.

While traveling in Cheongju, I was trying to figure out what to eat to clear away the pleasant buzz from the night before's light drinking, so my boyfriend — who takes jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) very seriously — and I headed to a jjamppong spot in Yongjeong-dong that locals apparently line up for.

One of my small joys while traveling is hunting down regional jjamppong restaurants like I'm clearing stages in a game, and this visit to Gyodong Jjamppong Yongjeong Branch exceeded expectations — deep smoky flavor, a spicy rich broth, and even a special spicy ulzzajang and menbosha. Local Cheongju gentlemen kept streaming in nonstop, so here's my honest review of this genuinely popular spot.

We timed our visit to Gyodong Jjamppong Yongjeong Branch for the Sunday lunch peak, and I was surprised to find the place already nearly full of diners. Seeing so many neighborhood regulars — older local gentlemen especially — inside gave me the confidence that this was truly a can't-fail local favorite.

The side dishes were set up neatly at a self-serve bar where you could easily grab kimchi, onion, and pickled radish — very convenient to use.

## Menu and prices at Gyodong Jjamppong, including 6,000-won jajangmyeon

![Menu board listing dishes meant to go with drinks](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang-06-zsyy8-900.webp)

Looking over the menu at Gyodong Jjamppong Yongjeong Branch, there were plenty of hangover-friendly meal options, plus a variety of dishes meant to go with a drink in the evening. In this era of high prices, ₩6,000 jajangmyeon felt like a real bargain!

It seemed like lunch draws in hangover-curing diners while evenings bring in people looking for a drink alongside their meal — I already found myself wanting to come back for dinner. After some deliberation, we

- Jjamppong ₩9,000
- Spicy ulzzajang ₩7,000
- Menbosha (8 pieces) ₩14,000
- Drink ₩2,000

ordered exactly this.

## Menbosha (fried shrimp toast): 8 pieces for 14,000 won

![A plate of golden fried menbosha](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang-07-1txi7-900.webp)

The menbosha (deep-fried shrimp toast) arrived first. The minced shrimp sandwiched between the toast was evenly cooked through without burning, inside or out. The golden-brown fried color alone made my mouth water.

![Cross-section of menbosha showing the minced shrimp filling](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang-08-1mo37-900.webp)

The cooking was precise enough that even someone with a shrimp allergy or sensitivity could feel reassured eating it. The crispy, savory toast and the moist, springy shrimp filling worked together beautifully — a great dessert-slash-side dish to pair with the spicy jjamppong and ulzzajang.

## Is the 9,000-won smoky jjamppong a good hangover cure?

![Gyodong's jjamppong piled high with bean sprouts](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang-09-tyvkg-900.webp)

The jjamppong, Gyodong's main event and what I was most looking forward to, came out with a deep smoky aroma hitting my nose the moment it arrived — pure art. It was piled high with crunchy bean sprouts, and I couldn't help but blurt out, 'Oh, this is definitely going to cure my hangover.'

![Squid and shrimp ingredients in the jjamppong](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang-11-3sp64-900.webp)

![Noodles lifted up from the jjamppong bowl](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang-12-1qzmv-900.webp)

![Close-up of the smoky jjamppong](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang-13-1bhch-900.webp)

The broth was rich and spicy with that deep smoky flavor melted right in, and it was loaded with squid, shrimp, meat, and vegetables — a perfect variety to enjoy alongside the noodles.

## Spicy ulzzajang for 7,000 won: why we skipped the regular jajangmyeon

![A glossy bowl of spicy ulzzajang](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang-14-lva1t-900.webp)

I almost ordered regular jajangmyeon but decided to try Gyodong's spicy ulzzajang out of curiosity, and the moment it arrived, its glossy sheen made me swallow hard. Since we're the type to douse regular jajangmyeon in chili powder anyway, I was really curious about this one.

![Ulzzajang noodles tossed in sauce](https://img.superchart.com/images/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang/gyodong-jjamppong-yongjeong-spicy-uljjajang-15-3w0ck-900.webp)

It gave off that deliciously spicy aroma no Korean could resist, and the secret sauce paired perfectly with the noodles. Thanks to the sauce, the noodles had a slightly chewier texture. The sweet-spicy sauce clung to the noodles with zero greasiness, delighting every bite — I really felt like ordering this instead of regular jajang was the right call.

Delivery app orders kept coming in nonstop while we ate, and after tasting the food, I understood exactly why Cheongju locals love this Chinese restaurant so much.
